I'm getting rather tired of hearing speculation (what were people thinking?),
exultation (we won! we won! we won! and we're going to win again),
assumption (people wanted liberal 'cuz they're tired of conservative), and/or
assasination (it's Bush and his war that brought down the conservative cause) in response to this question when the true answer is so simple -- as simple as the ordinary people voting.
WE WERE FACED WITH A CHOICE BETWEEN 6 OF ONE AND HALF A DOZEN OF ANOTHER!
Time after time, we ordinary people sit and watch nice guys, sincere guys, straight-truth-telling guys go off to Washington and be sucked into another planet where money rules, corruption is normal, and lies are true. Most of us ordinary people, whether liberal or conservative, value truth, honor, courage, integrity, strength; qualities virtually unseen in those expected to represent us. We don't want our leaders to demonstrate our own weaknesses; they're supposed to be above all that. And we certainly don't want them acting worse!
Committed, patriotic voters throughout my country/small-town community were rather disinterested, or at best undecided, in voting simply because republicans seem as easily corrupted as democrats. Few, if any, actually do what they say they'll do. We can't believe in smiles and handshakes anymore.
When we see a leader, unimpressed with power, untainted by money, proud of his country, and willing to fight for "truth, justice and the American way" not just with words, but backed with his actions, I'll guarantee voters will be there in spades.
