The Simple Woman's Daybook ~ #11 ~ 12/1/08

FOR TODAY...

Outside my window...On this cold, gloomy morning the snow has just started to fall.  Even as I watch it seems that the flakes are getting a little bigger.  Forecasters say we 'may' have up to 3" today.  It is - after all - December in Ohio.

I am thinking...that I will miss our wonderful church family that we love so dearly.  After 12-1/2 years of making the 70 mile round trip at least twice a week to our church, we have decided to look for a church closer to home after the first of the year.  It's breaking our hearts, but it has been confirmed in all 4 of our hearts.  I will, however, still attend the Seminary.

I am thankful for...a warm house on a cold, blustery day.

From the learning rooms...We are OFF for CHRISTmas break!  In our homeschool, we take off June, July and December instead of August.  Our long, wonderful break has begun!

From the kitchen...I'm considering potato soup.  My grandma's VERY simple Kentucky Depression-era version.

I am wearing...thick, warm socks, flannel pj bottom and a sweat shirt.  It's a cold morning!

I am creating...an empty corner so that Jenna and I can put up our CHRISTmas tree today!  Woohoo!!!

I am going...to the local Old Order farm and get my milk and brown eggs before the snow really kicks in.  I underestimated how much milk we would use during the Thanksgiving weekend and we squeaked out the last of it last night.

I am reading...Bible; still reading Pride & Prejudice.

I am hoping...that we will find great opportunities for ministry in which-ever church we 'land' in.

I am hearing...the T.V.

Around the house...Jenna and I will be putting up most of the CHRISTmas decorations today!  That's ALWAYS so much better than taking them down.

One of my favorite things...good food, fellowship and deep conversation with trusted Christian friends.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  putting up CHRISTmas decorations - inside and out, getting Maggie (our dog) trimmed, making some time to spend w/my mother.  Unfortunately, it may include a funeral as my 94 year old uncle (my mom's last brother out of 13 siblings) will probably pass away today or tomorrow.  I'm praying that the Lord works in ways that we don't understand while he is uncounscious and that somehow he will be Heaven-bound.

Here is picture thought I am sharing...

~ CHRISTmas Eve 2004 we had 21" of snow!!

FOR TODAY...

Outside my window...Cold, gloomy rain.  But it's quiet and comforting all at the same time.  Makes home seem all the more cozy and warm.

I am thinking...that I have so much to do this week in preparation for Thanksgiving.

I am thankful for...salvation through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, a free country and a family who loves me.

From the learning rooms...a short week this week, we'll end on Wednesday and have a long Thanksgiving weekend off!

From the kitchen...nothing in the kitchen for lunch - I'm treating out this afternoon b/c I'll be shopping and runnig errands.

I am wearing...thick, warm socks, jeans and on dark green Lakeside hoodie 'cos it's COLD.  (Yep...I've got a bunch of those hoodies!)

I am creating...a clean house for my mom's "inspection" on Thanksgiving.

I am going...to Hobby Lobby to get a small-ish informal coffie table.

I am reading...Bible; still reading Pride & Prejudice.

I am hoping...I will still be able to find all I need for Thanksgiving, since I'm shopping rather late this year.

I am hearing...the radio.

Around the house...this weekend we bought a livingroom set from some dear friends of ours!  It's so cool!  Ty finally has a lounger!  lol

One of my favorite things...a cozy home w/a cup of tea and a good book.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Short week of school, praise team practice, house cleaning, Thanksgiving!

Here is picture thought I am sharing...

For Today...

Outside my window...beautiful sunshine shining on a very thin layer of snow.  Sparkling like glitter on the roofs of the house and out-buildings.  It's been a few days since the morning has begun with sunshine.

I am thinking...how silly I was to have forgotten to do my Daybook yesterday!

From the learning rooms...major time with Marine Biology, today.

I am thankful for...the minor remodeling we're able to do as we can afford it.

From the kitchen...I'm getting a new dishwasher today!  Woohoo!!!

I am wearing...jeans, black turtleneck w/my gold Lakeside hoodie.

I am reading...Bible; still reading Pride & Prejudice.  Haven't had much time lately.

I am hoping...that the Lord will bless our church and that dd#2 will find the ministry the Lord wants her to be involved in and that it will bless her precious heart.

I am creating...a list of things I may want to make as CHRISTmas presents.

I am hearing...the radio.

Around the house...I am cleaning up where the old dishwasher used to be in preparation for the new one coming today.

One of my favorite things...double yokes in my farm-fresh brown eggs.

A few plans for the rest of the week...homeschool, praise team practice, a seminary class, gym, CHRISTmas crafts and possibly painting.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...

Our 2 girls.  Just love those smiles, just love their laughter.  When did they grow up?

FOR TODAY...

Outside my window...
Grey and cold.  It started out in the 20's but we are now in the 30's.  Indian Summer is over.

I am thinking...that I need to do some lesson planning.

I am thankful for...my husband.  He tries so hard to understand this house full of women that the Lord gave him.

From the learning rooms...Jenna is feeling better so this week will be a full week of academics and back to gym on Thursday.

From the kitchen...Cleaning up the dishes from a busy weekend.

I am wearing...sweats.  It's COLD!

I am creating...homemade face wash w/tea tree and lavender oils.  I'm thinking about trying a recipe for shampoo.

I am going...to pay the water bill and pick up some things at the grocery.

I am reading...Bible; Pride and Prejudice.

I am hoping...That Maggie (our dog) will sit still so I can brush her out, today.

I am hearing...Glenn Beck on the radio.

Around the house...Laundry (every Monday), sweeping, dusting, mopping...the usual Monday chores.

One of my favorite things...sweet little baby feet.

A few plans for the rest of the week...homeschool, gym, praise team practice, trying to make time to visit my mom.

Here is picture thought I am sharing...

This is my dd#2, almost 18.  I think she's adorable!  She loves Fall as much as I do.

For Today...

Outside my Window...Lovely sun-shiny day.  A little too warm because of a blast of Indiana Summer, but cool and crisp is on the way.

I am thinking...What a good time I had w/my brother and his girlfriend.  We made the rounds to my favorite German Baptist and Old Order German Baptist grocery store, bulk food store and farm for brown eggs and whole milk.

From the learning rooms...Jenna is getting back into the swing of a full school load after being in Erie, PA w/her wonderful Daddy for her last volleyball tournament.  She came back w/a cold, so things are going a little slow.

I am thankful for...the FACT that God is STILL on the Throne!!

From the kitchen...This afternoon was chicken and rice soup.  Tonight will be salisbury steak w/noodles.

I am wearing...jeans and one of my favorite Lakeside hoodies (I have a bunch of them...can you tell? lol I get one every year).

I am reading...My Bible; "Pride & Prejudice"...AGAIN!

I am hoping...that our young friend who had a baby on Saturday will be blessed of the Lord because of the repentance of her heart b/c of the mistake she made.  That she will continue on in her walk w/the Lord and raise this sweet baby in His ways.  I really think she will.

I am creating...Herb mixes and some more glycerin soap.  I didn't get to make as much as I wanted a couple of weeks ago.

I am hearing...the radio and the jingle-jangle of Maggie's dog tags as she prances through the house.

Around the house...Hoping that Jenna's cold doesn't get any worse.

One of my favorite things...Seeing a red-tailed hawk perched upon a fence-post or a telephone pole and thanking the Lord for putting it there just for me to see.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...Homeschool, going to the food co-op to pick up our order, a Seminary class on Wednesday night, praise team practice, homeschool gym, figuring out when to start the "Great Expectations Classic Book Club" again.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...

This is the Glen's cabin from PBS's "Frontier House" - one of my favorite series.  Doesn't that look SO inviting?

For Today...

Outside my Window...dreary fall day, rainy, cold - only around 40 degrees; but once again, the Lord has used the rain to bring out magnificent rich reds, burgandies and golds.  LOVE fall color!

I am thinking...That I will miss Ty and Jenna while they are at a volleyball tournament in Erie, PA most of the week.  That this may be the last week I talk about volleyball to you!  lol

From the learning rooms...I'm giving Jenna grace in her schoolwork this week.  Since she and Ty will be leaving on Wednesday all I am stressing is Bible and American Government.

I am thankful for...That when I fell in a huge puddle INSIDE the middle of a Meijers store on Friday, that all I did was fall on my knee and twist my leg.  It could have been much worse and I could be in a cast or something.  But it's almost back to normal and I am grateful.  I'm also thankful that Jenna's v-ball team WON a saturday tournament they were in and Jenna was awarded as one of the three best players of the tourney!  Woohoo!!!

From the kitchen...homemade mac and cheese for lunch.  I'm going to run out to my favorite Old Order German Baptist farm stores to stock up and then I'll
go to a larger grocery store to get the rest.

I am wearing...Burgandy thermal leggings and burgandy over-sized sweat shirt.

I am reading...Bible; the new Fall issue of TOS and deciding which Jane Austin book I want to read while the family is away.

I am hoping...that my family and the rest of the Golden Angels homeschool volleyball team will be kept safe on their trip to Erie and back, that they will have a BLAST and that Jenna will make wonderful, lasting memories of her last v-ball tourney with her teammates and her daddy.  And that Jasper and I can have some fun mother/daughter time while we're here by ourselves.

I am creating...a plan to get my house better organized this week.

I am hearing...the radio.

Around the house...baking cookies, maybe a yellow cake w/chocolate icing and fall colored sprinkles.

One of my favorite things...hearing my husband's heart-felt laugh.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...grocery shopping, cleaning, laundry, praparations for the trip; doing something special w/Jasper while the others are gone.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...

My favorite cartoon when I was a little girl.  Beany and Cecil the Seasick Sea Serpant.

For Today...

Outside my Window...Beautiful fall morning.  Lots of sunshine, clear blue skies and blissfully cool fall weather.

I am thinking...That I need to visit my mom.

From the learning rooms...Jenna has gotten so much out of a Bible study that she's doing (we always include Bible study in our homeschool).  It's "Body. Beauty. Boys. The Truth About Girls and How We See Ourselves."  It's a great study on body image and fighting all the falsity that t.v. and culture forces on teens and young women and counters it beautifully w/what the Bible calls us to be as women.

I am thankful for...That the memorial service our church had for my friend's son who was murdered in Atlanta went so well.  I hope it was such a blessing for her and for her family and friends who couldn't make it to Atlanta for the first one.

From the kitchen...We'll have lazagna for lunch; but for right now I'm smelling coffee brewing and my FAVORITE Apple Jack candle burning.

I am wearing...a long demin skirt, black turtle neck and my oldest dd's Golden Angels hoodie.

I am reading...Bible; History/Government books for my TOS column.

I am hoping...to really get into an exercise routine, especially w/cooler weather approaching.

I am creating...fall colored knitted dish cloths w/cotton yarn.  If I HAVE to wash dishes, I like to make it a little more enjoyable by using something that I've made.  I'm tweaking my TOS column and getting ready to send it in for the Winter 08/09 issue.

I am hearing...the washer, the dog slinging her leash to tell me she needs out - so I'd better hurry!

Around the house...sweeping and dusting, probably a light mop of the kitchen and downstairs bathroom, laundry.

One of my favorite things...being outside on a cool, crisp fall day (or night) and smelling fireplace or bonfire smoke.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...Cleaning out my kitchen cabinets.  Thursday is Senior Night at Jenna's volleyball game, Friday is Banquet.  Then the next 2 weeks will be filled w/tournaments and THEN I will be able talk about something else to YOU!

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...

Topo Giggio ~ one of my favorite childhood memories.  "Oh, Eddie, keess me good-night!"

For Today...

Outside my window...another beautiful fall day.  Thank You, Lord.  Even though it is unseasonably warm today, once the rains came last week we started seeing some of that lovely red!

I am thinking...that I need to clean the kitchen!

From the learning rooms...NO SCHOOL TODAY!!  We're taking Columbus Day off as it comes on the same day that the Golden Angels homeschool volleyball team makes the trek up to Marion, Ohio for tonight's game.  It's the farthest we go for a regular season (non-tournament) game.  PLUS...my dear husband has today off from work (he's a contractor at a military base) and we want to spend as much time NOT traveling w/him as we can.

I am thankful for...an extra day to spend w/my sweetheart.

From the kitchen...my dh's favorite brunch of Amish French Toast and a new fresh loaf of bread.

I am wearing...my wonderful flannels!  Give me denim, flannel, thermal or cotton and I'm happy.

I am reading...The Last Days by Joel Rosenburg; he's sort of a Christian John Grisham-type writer.

I am hoping...that the repair work on my bow window won't cost an arm and a leg.

I am creating...a better organized house.

I am hearing...the radio, my dh turning pages in his morning newspaper.

Around the house...laundry, general house cleaning, enjoying each other's company.

One of my favorite things...now that our oldest dd is almost 21 and works outside the home, will be going back to school this January, has a social life and is involved w/a couple of ministries at our church - it's SO nice when all 4 of us can sit down to supper together.  We laugh, and gab, and plan.  It's an odd time of transition for me...I love to see them stretch their wings, but I miss being w/them all the time.

A few plans for the rest of the week...trying to keep school and housework on track w/all the volleyball.  I'm sorry I keep bringing this up, but at this time of year it's all-consuming; 3 and 4 games a week!  But this is dd#2's Senior year and we are trying to make this as special as possible (just as we did for dd#1)...so it's a big part of our lives until the 1st week of November.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...

Speaking of volleyball.  They also got new uniforms this year, too.

For Today...

Outside my Window...a beautiful sun-shiny day.  The only disappointment about the weather is that it's supposed to get up into the low 70s...I'm ready for it to stay down in the 60s and 50s.

I am thinking...that my friend, whose son was just murdered in front of his wife, is grieving and needs so much prayer.

From the learning rooms...the usual for my last homeschooler, Jenna, who is a Senior this year...Bible, American Government, Composition, Current Events, Far Above Rubies (life skills), Marine Biology and Art/Nature Journal.

I am thankful for...a wonderful church home; 24 years w/my wonderful husband.

From the kitchen...Asian style chicken and rice for lunch.  Fast fooding it tonight a the vollyball game.

I am wearing...jeans, one of my many comfy, cozy Lakeside hoodies, hair in a headband and bare feet.

I am reading...the e-book Homestead Simplicity.  Lovely.

I am hoping...be able to get some household things accomplished before I have to pick up my order at the food co-op this afternoon.

I am creating...an attitude of peace for my home.

I am hearing...the radio, the clothes dryer and Jenna asking me a homeschool question.

Around the house...trying to decide if the girls and I can afford to give surprise support to a friend of ours who had to rush to Atlanta b/c her only son was killed defending his wife against would-be robbers this past weekend.  His funeral is Wednesday, in Atlanta, and she is there alone not only having to deal w/the tragic death of her 22 yr old son, but she has to contend w/a hostile ex-husband, too.

One of my favorite things...I just got back from a morning trip to our local Old Order German Baptist farm stores.  I LOVE to go there, and do just about every week for cheap groceries (one family has a scratch n dent store), brown eggs and whole milk right off the farm and another Old Order lady has a bulk store in a building attached to her home.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...Homeschool, homeschool volleyball games, the possible trip to Atlanta for the funeral...celebrating our 24th wedding anniversary TODAY!!

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...

 For Today...

Outside my Window...
Sunny morning, the trees are JUST starting to wear some red on their tops, leaves are beginning to fall.

I am thinking...I need to run out to our Old Order German Baptist friend's farm and get a couple dozen brown eggs before they're gone.  (FYI...Old Order folks live like Amish.)

From the learning rooms...I'm excited and a little apprehensive b/c Jenna will be starting her Marine Biology textbook today.  I'm more of a mammal person!

I am thankful for...A great church home.  Even though it's 35 miles away, it is SO worth the distance.

From the kitchen...Flax Seed bread in the oven.  Lunch will include chicken breasts in olive oil, sprikled w/Spike seasoning, my own herb mix and a little rosemary.

I am wearing...old jeans, red and pink checked flannel button-up shirt, bare feet, hair pulled back in front.

I am reading...Bible/Ecc., re-reading Treasury of Vintage Homekeeping Skills by Martha Greene.

I am hoping...That we can accomplish all we have on our schedule before Jenna's homeschool volleyball game, tonight.

I am creating...I think this is soap day.  I'm nearly out of homemade soap and new soap has to "ripen" for 2 weeks before it can be used.  I'd better get on the ball!

I am hearing...the radio and the clothes dryer.

Around the house...I'm getting so anxious to start painting our living room (light sage) and downstairs bathroom (dark sage and tan).  I'm also considering tearing off the paper and painting the kitchen (cottage or barn red).

One of my favorite things...the VERY golden sunsets of fall and the changing colors.  My favorite time of year.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week...homeschool, 3 volleyball games for Jenna's team, I have a class at the seminary I attend on Thursday night, Friday is a memorial benefit to help out my friend's family because of the tragic loss of her husband in July.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing with you...

I LOVE this picture of my dear Daddy c. 1932/33 when he was a little boy on their family farm.
