Did you ever wonder what you would have looked like if you lived in the past? Not pioneers days, but in the last 50 years...what would your yearbook picture would have looked like? I just found out about a hilarious website - http://yearbookyourself.com - where you can find out that very thing! Just down-load a picture of yourself, or someone else in your family, and take a look!

1952 ~ Love the pearls!
1958 ~ I look like my aunt.

1960 ~ As my friend says, "Oh, help me Rhonda!"
1966 ~ My brother's 1st wife had this style in her yearbook!
1968 ~ I hear Dick Van Dyke music!
1974 ~ Actually, this is pretty close to the mark! I would have been 15 at the time and my hair was so long I could sit on it. If my face were thinner it would nearly look authentic.
1978 ~ 'Nough said!
1996 ~ This looks like one of my best friends' hair. I don't think I'll do the blonde thing, though.
2000 ~ This looks like a sad case of the head cheerleader who didn't realize her day had past at the 30th reunion! Yikes!
Try it out for yourself. It was great fun! We did it with our whole family. Maybe I'll put of those up later.

Favorite Lyrics
The ladies on an e-mail list that I'm on were sharing some of our favorite hymn/praise and worship lyrics and I thought I would share mine with you. In Christ Alone (My Hope is Found)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcpLZgCwcEE&feature=related
In Christ alone my hope is found.
He is my Light, my strength, my song.
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love! What depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strifings cease.
My Comforter, my all in all,
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless Babe.
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied,
For ev’ry sin on Him was laid.
Here in the death of Christ I live.
There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain.
THEN BURSTING FORTH IN GLORIOUS DAY,
UP FROM THE GRAVE HE ROSE AGAIN!
And as He stands in victory,
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me.
For I am His, and He is mine,
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.
No guilt in life, no fear in death:
This is the pow’r of Christ in me.
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
‘til He returns, nor cause me harm;
Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.

Inner Beauty
The Word for Today with Bob Gass
Thursday, 11th September 2008
Beauty, the… kind… God delights in.
1 Peter 3:4 TM
A lady was applying face cream when her little girl asked, "What's that you're putting on, Mom?" "Moisturizer," she replied. "The sales lady said it would make me beautiful." With an honesty only children have, she replied, "Mom, I don't think it's working." There's nothing wrong with looking good, but there's much more to you than your clothes and your hairstyle. Plus, you can go broke fixing up the outside, because "what Mother Nature giveth, Father Time taketh away!" Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "To find beauty we must carry it with us."
It's a big mistake to focus on the outside and fail to appreciate the inner qualities God's given you. Solomon said, "Beauty is… [not lasting]" (Proverbs 31:30 AMP). When God made you He didn't just decorate the outside, He gave you "inner beauty, the gentle, gracious kind… God delights in." However, because Peter also talked about "fancy hair, gold jewelry… fine clothes" (1 Peter 3:3 NCV), a few well-intentioned people have used that to create a legalistic standard by which to measure and judge others. Does the Bible teach us to dress appropriately? Absolutely. Paul writes: "I… want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety… appropriate for women who profess to worship God" (1 Timothy 2:9-10 NIV). But when you focus on the wrong area you get the wrong results. "Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7 NIV).
Don't allow what you see on TV or in the mirror to define your worth. Work instead to develop the kind of inner beauty God commends.
Daily Bible Reading:
Ezekiel 27:25-30:26, Luke 21:25-38, Psalm 78:40-55, Proverbs 20:22-24
My comment...
Amen! I used to model (from age 9 to 25) and "double-dipped" as a make-up artist (from age 19 to 34) and I KNOW how SO MANY put so much store in what they look like - they LIVE for what they look like. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed the make-up artistry work, especially (LOVE playing in those colors!!), I hardly wear the stuff anymore...and when I do I don't wear a fraction of what I did.
Now, don't get me wrong...I think it is fine to look nice...I especially like for my dh to like what he sees...but don't make it your god. Age happens. Look at the mockery those in Hollywood are making of themselves. Many of them don't even look human anymore...they look like grotesque plastic gargoyles to me. Their lips are so puffed and spread and pulled that they look like duck-billed platapusses (have you SEEN Meg Ryan lately?), their foreheads are so loaded w/botox that they can't physically express emotion. Sad...so sad.
I'm now content to have exchanged my 4" heels and dress suits for demin skirts, jeans, flannel, cotton and my beloved Burkenstocks and Earth shoes! lol As long as my Lord loves me, my dh loves me and I'm still attractive to HIM, and my children and those I care about love me...I'm happy and content.

The Importance of Touch
Someone on an e-list that I'm on commented that "I was watching a show yesterday and the author said ,men stray not usually b/c of physical reasons, but because mental reasons. The author said to make sure you find time to compliment dh, recognize how hard he works to support the family and laugh with him. It was a good show and really made you think of the last time I really made dh feel special." Below is my reply:
I just heard one of those little one minute “up-date”-type blurbs on K-LOVE this a.m. and Dr. Dobson was talking about Dr. Joy’s book, “Bonding,” and how so many couples – after being married for a while – forget the 1st steps to bonding that occurred early in their relationship. 1st is eye contact and 2nd is touch and simple things like holding hands. Remembering how ELECTRIC simply touching or holding hands was when we were 1st dating/courting and going back to that to rekindle what may have been lost.
One thing my parents taught me (by example) is how utterly important touch is. My h is the baby of 4 boys w/a mother who was very non-demonstrative and not encouraging at all. When we started dating and 1st married, I MADE SURE that I touched him, held his hand, caressed his shoulder or arm as I simply walked by him on my way through another room, etc. I believe that the Lord told me that he needed it. And he did. To this day (24 years later) HE will reach out to hold my hand while sitting on the couch or in church or walking somewhere together.
Touch is also VERY important in the lives of our children … beginning w/babies. YEARS ago I saw 20/20 or some-such show about a terrible experiment that some sick “Dr” did where he deprived babies of touch and affection and how it affected them … nearly all of them literally waisted away and died w/in a year!! “Nurses” were merely there to change, bathe and feed them…they were admonished to NEVER look them in the eye, smile or touch them in any affectionate way … ONLY to do what service needed to be done. While studying that, he also recognized that children from loving homes – where family had eye contact, cooed, touched, played, smiled, and expressed encouragement and love – those babies thrived and had higher i.q.’s.
I dare to say that we – as loving wives and helpmates – can boost and encourage our husbands AND children by simply smiling, encouraging, having eye contact and touching in a loving way.
I would be interested in YOUR thoughts.
Where is God When it Hurts?
Another blogger basically asked on her blog: "Where is God when it hurts? Why is it that so many sincere, dedicated Christians seem to suffer or have bad things happen to them?" Well...you know me...I couldn't resist a somewhat lengthy reply. So, I thought I would blog it here.
PLEASE feel free to give your opinion on Where is God When it Hurts?

I think it's very natural for us to wonder this, to even complain about it to the Lord. But He is a BIG GOD and He CAN take it! I don't think He gets angry when we question Him, or even get mad ... just don't STAY there!
When our little girl died...I asked over and over again, "why?" Just 3 weeks ago yesterday, the husband of a dear friend of mine - a wonderful godly husband and dad - was killed on his motorcyle on his way to work; a lady (who turned out to be a pastor's wife, poor thing) pulled out from a stop sign and he was killed instantly. He was wearing his helmet, going the speed limit, he had the right-of-way...did everything right. But the Lord has our days written out in His book of life and we live and serve at HIS pleasure; especially Christians. None of us are promised tomorrow.
We also need to remember that we live in a fallen world. And especially as Christians, we have an enemy who HATES us, whose greatest desire is our fall and our pain. Sometimes I think he picks the strongest in faith to drive in the biggest hurts...like Job, I think God has told him not to take our lives. After the shock and sadness and anger and grief start to fade - just a little - I pray that we will all be faithful enough to remember that something about this will serve God's purpose to expand His kingdom...we may never even know what that was...but HE IS ALWAYS WORKING.
As Nanny said in her comment, the Lord PROMISED not to give us more than we can handle. And I admit, I've looked up and asked, "Lord! Are You SURE you have the right person, here? Cos, I think You made a mistake picking me!" But...I put one foot in front of the other, I pray, I trust and I live. Sometimes - at least for a while - that's all you CAN do.

PLEASE PRAY for this Family
Yesterday I had the radio on in the afternoon and there was newsbreak that came on about a country intersection in our area being closed because there was a motorcyle fatality. This morning, I was utterly and completely saddened to find out that it was a friend of ours. The father of a local, wonderful homeschool family.
Please pray for the Times family. The dear wife, LaNelle, is now left 3 fantastic kids and, they just found out a few weeks ago, another sweet baby on the way.
Forrest was such a great guy - wonderful man of God, loving husband and daddy and ALWAYS smiling. He will be missed by everyone who knew him. If you are a local homeschooler to my area, I will be posting service information at http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/McCHEO as soon as I know anything.

The Washington Monument. This is impressive!!
This is pretty cool and an interesting history lesson.
|
One detail that is never mentioned is that in Washington , D.C. there can never be a building of greater height than the Washington Monument .
With all the uproar about removing the ten commandments, etc., this is worth a moment or two of your time.
On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington , D.C. , are displayed two words: Laus Deo.
No one can see these words. In fact, most visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that matter, probably couldn't care less.
Once you know Laus Deo's history, you will want to share this with everyone you know. These words have been there for many years; they are 555 feet, 5.125 inches high, perched atop the monument, facing skyward to the Father of our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the District of Columbia, capital of the United States of America.
Laus Deo! Two seemingly insignificant, unnoticed words. Out of sight and, one might think, out of mind, but very meaningfully placed at the highest point over what is the most powerful city in the most successful nation in the world.
So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables and only seven letters, possibly mean? Very simply,
they say "Praise be to God!"
Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk was President of the United States, it was not until 1888 that the monument was inaugurated and opened to the public. It took twenty-five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to the Father of our nation, Laus Deo. "Praise be to God!"
From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four major segments. From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of the designer, Pierre Charles l'Enfant; a perfect cross imposed upon the landscape, with the White House to the north, the Jefferson Memorial to the south, the Capitol to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west.
A cross you ask? Why a cross? What about ‘separation of church and state’? Yes, a cross; separation of church and state was not, is not, in the Constitution. So, read on…How interesting and, no doubt, intended to carry a profound meaning for those who bother to notice.
Praise be to God! Within the monument itself are 898 steps and 50 landings. As one climbs the steps and pauses at the landings the memorial stones share a message:
On the 12th Landing is a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore;
on the 20th is a memorial presented by some Chinese Christians;
on the 24th a presentation made by Sunday School children from New York and Philadelphia quoting Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16 and Proverbs 22:6. Praise be to God!
When the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th, 1848, deposited within it were many items including the Holy Bible presented by the Bible Society. Praise be to God! Such was the discipline, the moral direction, and the spiritual mood given by the founder and first President of our unique democracy "One Nation, Under God."
I am awed by Washington 's prayer for America. Have you ever read it? Well, now is your unique opportunity, so read on!
"Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."
Laus Deo!
When one stops to observe the inscriptions found in public places all over our nation's capitol, he or she will easily find the signature of God, as it is unmistakably inscribed everywhere you look. You may forget the width and height of "Laus Deo", its location, or the architects but no one who reads this will be able to forget its meaning, or these words: "Unless the Lord builds the house its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain." (Psalm 127: 1)
It is hoped you will send this to every child you know; to every sister, brother, father, mother or friend. They will not find offense, because you have given them a lesson in history that they probably never learned in school. With that, be not ashamed, or afraid.

CLAIM: "Kids Who Say 'Yuck' to Foreign Foods May Be Racist" ~ HUH?!
|
LONDON, July 7 (UPI) -- Toddlers who say "yuck" when given flavorful foreign food may be exhibiting racist behavior, a British government-sponsored organization says.
The London-based National Children's Bureau released a 366-page guide counseling adults on recognizing racist behavior in young children, The Telegraph reported Monday.
The guide, titled Young Children and Racial Justice, warns adults that babies must also be included in the effort to eliminate racism because they have the ability to "recognize different people in their lives."
The bureau says to be aware of children who "react negatively to a culinary tradition other than their own by saying yuck."
"Racist incidents among children in early years settings tend to be around name-calling, casual thoughtless comments and peer group relationships," the guide says.
Staff members are advised not to ignore racist actions and to condemn them when they occur.

See the dangerous things that happen when a country signs the "UN Treaty on the Rights of the Child"? England and Canada have been prime examples of the out-landishness that putting the government in control of "all things children" will do - both to society and, most importantly, to the family.
I don't understand why the simple option of personal preference isn't taken into consideration here. So now, in England, are we to assume that children can't prefer one candy over another, one flavor over another, Italian food instead of Chinese? I suppose so.
So, just in case you didn't know, the things that make your children unique and wonderful also - according to the 'state' - make them racists.
Will they then start putting pets to sleep because they prefer certain people over others? Have you ever seen a dog raised in the home white people that barked at people of other ethnicities walking down the street? Is that dog racist or does it simply enjoy its own family and the safety of its own home? Once when we went to Holmes County and were about to take an Amish buggy ride, the gentleman driving our buggy had the only white buggy horse used by an Amish family. He said that when they go "to meeting" on Sundays that he had to tie up his buggy "out of biting distance" because the other bay colored (dark brown body w/black mane, forelock & tail) horses didn't like him and would bite him! Were those horses racists?
What these government "experts" don't want to understand is that everyone, even an animal, has a personal preference. Our taste buds enjoy different things. God made us unique! Uniqueness is something utterly lost when the government gets involved...you MUST like every type of food!...you MUST go to a school confined to one building...only with children of the same age...only taught by government fed teachers who only teach what they were taught...the WAY they were taught to teach it! Whew!
Freedom is far less exhausting!

Commenting on Jacque's Blog...
One of my favorite bloggers is dear Jacque Dixon. Like many of us, Jacque has more than one blog (http://www.homeschoolblogge.com/Jacquedixonsoulrestes and http://dixonhomestead.com/Jacque/?p=215) and sometimes puts the same thing on each...and sometimes doesn't. If you go to the "dixonhomestead" link, PLEASE read her post "Who Do We Christians Think We Are?" It will really give you some food for thought...and something to pray about.
Well, you know me, I can't resist a good chance to leave a comment! So, below is the comment I left. I would be interested in your thoughts - either on Jacque's post or on the thoughts in my comment alone.

Well said...heartbreakingly said. If anyone doesn't recognize themselves in everything you said, they are lying to themselves.
I'm wondering at the age of your friend...it seems to me that a portion of the teens and 20-somethings who are professing Christians find themselves living with a love for the Lord - but - are standing ankle deep in the very dangerous pond of the world. They are trying to live some sort of moral limbo. JUST THIS YEAR 3 unmarried couples of our 20yodd's friends (2 from our own church!) have become pregnant. It is staggering. One couple just got married 2 weekends ago (she's almost 4 months along), one couple are trying to decide whether they love each other enough to get married or will adopt out the baby (she's 5 months along) and one couple has ALREADY moved in together and will marry after the baby gets here in August.
I have to be honest here and say that even though my heart goes out to these young people, it frightens me. One of these couples, in particular, profess to be Christians but see nothing wrong w/the way they are living...it's just sort of hiccup in their plans. My dd's are trying to be good witnesses to these couples, but my whole family is finding it hard to love and support them and NOT appear approving (although 2 couples are utterly repentant and have drawn closer to the Lord through this). There are times when I'm afraid that THEY might not see the difference.
My prayer is that our dd's are storing all of this in their hearts and seeing for themselves the hardship and the hard lessons learned - no matter how their friends might try to "romaniticize" it - and see and understand that the Lord's ways are just and true. That what 'the world' sees as God's ways being a lists of 'don't's', our dd's will see God's ways as a protective hedge that will give you blessing and freedom INSIDE the hedge. That stepping outside of God's hedge of protection ALWAYS leads to grief and hardship...no matter what the sin.
They have walking, talking, living, breathing examples of the consequences of the arrogance of sin...even in anyone, any of us, that they love. My prayer is that while they are watching others learn the hard way that they will not only store those lessons up in their hearts, but that they will be compassionate and forgiving.

Can You Really Seperate Your Beliefs from Your Job?
Tia, a guest blogger on the TOS Publisher's "Home Where They Belong" blog, has a really good, very thought-provoking post today at http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/TOSPUBLISHER/545416. It concerns what I have titled this entry and the questionable non-work habits, interests and 2nd jobs that some public school "teachers" are engaged in and if it influences what and/or how they teach public schooled children. Can one REALLY seperate one's own beliefs from whatever your job is? I don't happen to think so. So, whether you read Tia's post or not, I wanted to share with you the comment I made - below. I'll bet you've had MANY of the same sort of experiences - I would like to hear them.
NEVER let anyone tell you that you will ruin your children's chances of being "socialized" because you homeschool!! NEVER!! YOUR children - and your children's future employers and spouses and their children - will appreciate you for what you are doing now!
Blessings from Ohio, Kim Wolf<><

Unfortunately, it seems that I see this imagination that the two can be separated manifesting most in the 20-somethings and teens who were public/government schooled. I've had many examples, oddly enough, fairly recently. There just seems to be a real immaturity of thought and unwillingness to be tolerant in a generation who, ironically, has been taught the dogma of "the new tolerance" in school...
1) While in a checkout line, a young bag boy was going on and on about a lady w/a crying toddler in the next line. "Why do people bring their stupid kids to the store w/them, anyway? J**z, just take the kid home!..." When the check out lady, who was embarrassed by his stupidity, wouldn't say anything to him and he was going on and on, I had had enough. I quietly leaned in so as not to embarrass him anymore than he was embarrassing himself and told him that he was showing his own immaturity and if he wanted to continue working w/the public he needed to stop. I also told him that since he was bagging in a line full of mohers who have all been in the same position as the poor mom he was chastizing, that any one of us would be glad to report him to his manager. Remarkably, that didn't EVEN stop his rude ranting. After I was checked out I found the store manager. Know what he told me? "I know, I hear about it all the time. But if I fire him, he'll just go across the street to WalMart and get a job there. Then I'll hire someone new who will be exactly lke him...THEY'RE ALL THE SAME!" If I hadn't been so shocked by his answer I would have given him a list of homeschooled teens who could work for him!
2) Just last week I was at a local CVS to pick up a Rx. Just as I reached the register to be checked out I saw the new, utterly pornographic cover of Sports Illustrated. As the young checkout girl was ringing up my purchase I politely said, "Would you mind if I turned this SI around? It's pretty revealing and their are women and children in this store." Then when I turned it around, the back was nearly as bad as the front. I asked her if she had one of those plasitc shields to put over it that SI and Cosmo sometimes has w/their name on the front, so that the nasty covers won't be seen. The lady in line behind me commented that that would be a great idea because it was actually pretty pornographic...REALLY pushing the limit. The YOUNG checkout girl practically yelled at us insisting that "everything that needs to be covered IS covered! I don't see anything wrong w/it!" The other lady and myself were somewhat stunned by her remark and the severity of her response, so we just sort of looked at each other and let it go. Here's the clincher that revealed even more how immature she was and how, as you have said, she could not separate her beliefs from her work...just as I was about to exit the store she yelled across the store to me, "I'm 22 years old, HUN, and I don't see anything wrong w/it!" To which I probably shouldn't have, but I replied, "Well, I'm 49, HUN, and I do!" And walked out. After I got home I called CVS and told the manager about this exchange - including what I shamefully fired back as I excited. THIS manager, however, was far more shocked w/what her employee had said to 2 customers. I told her I didn't want the girl fired or anything, but she really needs to know how to relate to customers.
There are so many other examples I can think of, but they were the most recent. Without fail, those who I have had these experiences with have been fairly young and glowing examples of the morals that are taught in the public schools - liberal curriculum, liberal teachers and ignorant peers are a lethal combination to our society.

PRAYERS for the Chapman Family!
Singer Steven Curtis Chapman's Daughter Dies in Tragic Accident

Grammy-winning Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman suffered an unthinkable tragedy Wednesday when his 5-year-old daughter was killed in an accident involving her brother.
Chapman's youngest daughter, Maria Sue, was hit in the driveway of her family's Franklin, Tenn., home by an SUV driven by her teenage brother, the Associated Press reports. The brother, whose name was not released, apparently did not see the girl.
Several family members witnessed the accident, according to the AP. Maria Sue later died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Laurie Holloway said.
"It looks like a tragic accident," said Laura McPherson, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Highway Patrol. No charges are expected.
"Just hours before this close knit family was celebrating the engagement of the oldest daughter Emily Chapman, and were just hours away from a graduation party marking Caleb Chapman's completion of high school. Now, they are preparing to bury a child who blew out 5 candles on a birthday cake less than 10 days ago," Chapman's manager Jim Houser wrote on a blog dedicated to Maria that was set up for condolences. "These words are unthinkable to type."
Longtime advocates of international adoption, Chapman and his wife adopted three daughters from China, including Maria, and have three biological children as well.
"After our first trip to China, my wife and I knew our lives were changing – our eyes and hearts were opening to how big God really is, and we have wanted to experience more of that," Chapman said on his Web site.
The singer also wrote a book about being a father titled Cinderella: The Love of Daddy and his Princess.

President Bush has vetoed the bloated, special-interest Farm Bill. This is a victory for you, me, and all taxpayers! But now I need your help to preserve this key win.
I urge you, before you do anything else today, tell your Senators and Representative to sustain President Bush’s veto of H.R. 2419, the 2008 Farm Bill.
The Farm Bill passed by Congress and vetoed by President Bush fails to provide any significant reform of the federal government’s outmoded, inefficient, and costly agricultural programs. This Depression-era web of subsidies, price and supply controls, and import restrictions long ago outlived its justification.
Rather than assisting small family farms, federal agricultural policies overwhelmingly benefit the wealthiest farmers and mega-agribusinesses - at the expense of American taxpayers and consumers like you and me!
If Congress overrides President Bush’s veto, the 2008 Farm Bill will continue to dole out direct payments to farmers without any regard to commodity prices or a farmer’s income. Sixty percent of these payments go to the wealthiest 10 percent of recipients. Married couples who farm and have adjusted gross income (AGI) of $1.5 million will continue to receive subsidies, as will people with AGI of $500,000 who are not even full-time farmers!
The bill also creates a new “permanent disaster fund” to the tune of $3.8 billion. A real disaster for taxpayers, most farmers, and the environment, such a fund will encourage planting on land that is prone to floods, droughts, and other catastrophes. Even more outrageous, most of these payments will go to the same farmers who already receive the bulk of the direct subsidy payments.
With 2008 net farm income forecast to reach $92 billion - 51 percent above its 10-year average - and commodity prices soaring, this Farm Bill will cost taxpayers a whopping $300 billion over the next five years!
As a consumer, you will also pay. Each year, sugar price supports alone cost us all $1.9 billion in higher prices at the grocery counter - not only for sugar, but also for sugar-containing products, like cereal, baked goods, and candy. The 2008 Farm Bill not only increases the support price for sugar, it guarantees domestic producers an 85 percent share of the U.S. market. Any excess supply from imports, which could be available for food production, would be auctioned by the government to ethanol facilities at a cost to taxpayers of $400 million annually.
Congress should have taken this opportunity to scrap the archaic farm subsidy system and replace it with a modern revenue insurance program providing a real safety net for farmers when revenue falls. Instead, lawmakers chose to kowtow to powerful agribusinesses by continuing to dole out huge payments to wealthy farmers who don’t need them. Some farmers receive taxpayer-provided subsidies in excess of $1 million annually.
Make no mistake about it. President Bush was completely justified in vetoing this disastrous Farm Bill. Now, help us sustain his veto. Tell your Senators and Representative today that as a taxpayer and consumer you’re tired of shouldering the burden for agricultural subsidies that benefit wealthy farmers and mega-agribusinesses!
Sincerely,

Thomas A. Schatz
President

Just a Mom?
A dear friend of mine sent me this story in an e-mail. I think I read it quite a while ago, possibly you have too, but I think it's a goodie and worth passing along to you.
Blessings from Ohio, Kim Wolf<><
JUST A MOM?
A woman, renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk's office, was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation.
She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself.
'What I mean is, ' explained the recorder, 'do you have a job or are you just a ...?'
'Of course I have a job,' snapped the woman. 'I'm a Mom.'
'We don't list 'Mom' as an occupation, 'housewife' covers it,' Said the recorder emphatically.
I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman; poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like , 'Official Interrogator' or 'Town Registrar.'
'What is your occupation?' she probed.
What made me say it? I do not know. The words simply popped out. 'I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations.'
The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair and looked up as though she had not heard right.
I repeated the title slowly emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written, in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.
'Might I ask,' said the clerk with new interest, 'just what you do in your field?'
Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, 'I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't) in the laboratory and in the field, (norma lly I would have said indoors and outside). I'm working for my Masters, (first the Lord and then the whole family) and already have four credits (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 16 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the
rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money.'
There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door.
As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants -- ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby) in the child development program,
testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than 'just another Mom.'
Motherhood!
What a glorious career!
Especially when there's a title on the door.
Think about it...
Does this make grandmothers,
'Senior Research associates in the field of Child Development and Human
Relations'
And great grandmothers, 'Executive Senior Research Associates?'
I think so!!!
I also think it makes Aunts, Associate Research Assistants
