dh has agreed to chickens!

doing the happy dance here!  We get to get chickens!  hehehe!  the kids are excited to have chickens.  I am excited to have a grasshopper control and fresh eggs.   A brother from our church said he will help us build a coop, so dh is going to talk to him about which plans to use and what we need to purchase.

but here to come my delimna: what chicken should I get?
I want: layers
cold-hardy
not easily spooked or mean (I have small children)

now, looking at this site, I have narrowed to the following:
Americuana
Austraorp
Delaware
Favorelles
Leghorn
New Hampshire
Plymouth Rock
Rhode Island
Sussex

any ideas or help would be appreciated.  i think I want to have 8-10 hens and a rooster.  should I make sure they are all the same breed, or would crosses in a next generation be okay?  I am so excited!  I cannot believe it, but, here we go....

Chickens are so fun and easy to care for. I know many start off with chickens on their homestead beacuse of the ease of them. I love having a mixture of birds.. it is fo fun to look out on the pasture and see different looking birds pecking the ground and such. I always have a rooster so that we have fertile eggs and therefore your eggs are a complete protein. Or at least that was always my understanding. If you get chicks now you will have eggs come late Summer early Fall and then they will reduce production durring the winter months. Make sure you have enough birds to meet your family needs and if you have some extras you can always sell them to others. We had 60 birds to start and then found that 30 is what worked best for our family. Hope these ideas help! Have fun! Taking care of the Lords animals is always a treat! Mrs. Joseph Wood

have ya go them yet? I live in Elko NV. and was very worried about the extream cold in the winter and heat in the summer. So I got a mix of Plymouth Rock and Light Brahmas. and one silly buff laced polish, for my son as a 4H project.

I have three little ones that I homeschool Katie(11) Shane(10) and Trevor (8) I was told by a friend who use to live in SLC that we have the same climate as you, something to do with elevation or something. And Yes, Elko is growing. we have a home Depot now. We are keeping our fingers crossed for Costco.

We love our chickens! We currently have cuckoo marans, barred rocks and Americanas. Right now in our area, we're having a shortage of chicks. The hatcheries just can't keep them in stock and nearly every breed of chicken is on back order. It's scary to not be able to buy chicks when you want to! Right now we have 15, but we were really hoping to have 100 this spring...just can't get them!

BTW, thanks for the welcome back!

So glad your getting chickens, I have to say Plymouth Rock, cuz I'm raising 106 of them right now, got them last week so their just over a week old. They are a good bird, layes a big brown egg, does well in our zone 5b. I have three ol hens left and they layed eggs tell early this year, they are way over ten years old

Best to ya on your chickens, adding you to my friends list, want to read about your food storage, good job.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a nice comment. Love the B-day cupcakes idea too, wow three cupcakes. You have been Blessed to have had your grandmother so long
