Our eyes were opened
Hubby and I talked last night about the girls and how spoiled they are. How it came about was we had the roof repair man come over to look at the leak. He asked why we wanted to build a large house at our ranch. I told him the home that is there is only 1082 square feet and this house we live in is feeling smaller to us because we would like the grand babies to have a room just for them. How many square feet is this house he asked? 1500 square feet. He said his family of 4 live in a 865 square foot home. ( I feel bad for looking at a 4200 square foot home).
Then our daughter Shayna drove up, he asked if that was her truck? I looked at him and said yes. He just looked at me. He then asked if Kristi will be getting her own car? I said yes ,as soon as we can find the truck we are looking for. Then the girls started talking about what kind of 2 horse trailer they want because our 4 horse is to much from them to haul just 2 horse or pigs. The man asked me if we were going to buy them a 2 horse trailer? I said yes. He then had a look on his face that said they are spoiled.
It really open my eyes!! They are really spoiled!! Most children in a family do not each get their own trucks or a horse trailer. They would use mom and dads. They will share a horse trailer though. We do need a two horse trailer, it is not just for them. When we go to horse shows it is a waste of gas to haul a huge 4 horse trailer with just an Arabian and a pony.
So last night we talked and it was really an eye opener for us both to see that our children have never wanted for anything. My husband has worked very hard to give us what we need and more. But we realize we need to change some things. To see it through some ones else's eyes was the opener. We are going to change some things. I am not bragging or anything like that just sharing my growing some more. It was just a real eye opener. I mean a real eye opener !!
God Bless, mj
CHRISTmas Questions Part II
Got this one from Jen...
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? YES! lol Usually bags for friends and wrapping for family. Don't know why, it just ends up that way. My FAVORITE wrap is brown paper tied w/twine or raffia w/some sort of CHRISTmas Stampin' Up stamps.
2. Real tree or Artificial? We used to do the real ones, but I pick up quills ALL year, so we have used a fake one for years. Last year, however, we got the most wonderful tree!! It's very rustic - just the way I like it - it has just a touch of "snow" (so it doesn't look 'cheap') and pine cones and we put only vintage and rustic ornaments on it. LOVE IT! I hate to take it down!
3. When do you put up the tree? If not the day after Thanksgiving, then the weekend following.
5. Do you like eggnog? No.
6. Favorite gift received as a child? Hmmm...my Barbie Dream House. I'm old enough that it was the second edition, still cardboard, but it was WAY cool!!
7. Hardest person to buy for? My mom. She's very well off and has 2 of everything.
8. Easiest person to buy for? My dog, Maggie!
9. Do you have a nativity scene? Yes; it's the one my family has had since I was about 3 years old and is starting to fall apart. I'd like to get replacement Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus and a few animals from the company that does the wooden angels for all occasions (shoot, can't think of the name). While I'm at it ... I CAN'T STAND to see the wise men in a nativity scene!! They didn't find Jesus until He was 2 years old, for Pete's sake...so put them waaaaay over on the other side of the house that they can make a journey of it!
10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Both. If I have your e-mail address, you'll probably get an e-mail; family and friends w/o e-mail get cards.
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? OK...I'm serious here...no joke...My dear grandma was a very frugal gal, having lived through the Depression she was always thinking of USEFUL things to give. The first CHRISTmas we were married she gave us a can of Crisco w/a bow on top!! lol
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? White CHRISTmas.
13. When do you start shopping? Usually in December.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yes. 'Nuff said.
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? My mom's stuffing!
16. Lights on the tree? White.
17. Favorite Christmas song? O Holy Night and I Wonder as I Wander. I have a really beautiful arrangement of 'I Wonder...' that I worked out on my hammered dulcimer.
18.Travel at Christmas or stay home? We usually go to my mom's house.
19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer’s? Possibly...um...no.
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? A rustic star.
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? We have our OWN family CHRISTmas on CHRISTmas Eve morning - when the girls were little we were always rushing all over the place and we weren't making OUR OWN memories and they couldn't enjoy their news clothes or toys. So, when our oldest was about 5 we started our own tradition on the day before.
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year. The emphasis on Santa and stores putting up CHRISTmas - eh hem - I mean 'holiday' decorations BEFORE halloween!!
23. Favorite ornament theme or color? Rustic, vintage.
24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? Didn't I answer that? My mom's stuffing.
25. What do you want for Christmas this year? A digital camera.

8.
When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
2nd or 3rd grade.

10.
How do you decorate your Christmas Tree?
We got a new Christmas tree last year that is very real-looking w/just a little ‘snow’ and pinecones on it. We put away many of our more trendy ornaments for the girls to have one of these days and now only use the more vintage and backwoods-looking ornaments. It’s very rustic and I LOVE IT!!

When I was little we dressed up for the meal. Now we just wear ‘nice’ jeans and maybe a ‘dress’ blouse/shirt or sweater.
24. Do you own a Santa hat?
nope – don’t do the Santa-thing here.
25.
Who do you normally spend Christmas with?
Our family ~~ Christmas Eve day is for our own family; the weekend before Christmas day is w/Ty’s side of the family, Christmas Day is usually w/my side of the family.
Desperately Seeking the Silver Lining
I am desperately seeking the silver lining.
Ok
We did refinance the house.
Paid of 96% of our debt
(one small card left, I can handle that :-)
House payment only went up 20.00
Got a lower interest rate.
Didn't have to make Oct and Nov. pmts.
Used that money to get out of debt.
Ok that's all good stuff.
Went to buy a new camcorder and the guy
would not give me the price I saw it for
in a sister store.
I said thank you, and left.
So I didn't make that major purchase.
I am working 2 jobs, and my 2nd job's boss
told me if I want any more hours,
he is glad to give them to me.
They gave my dh 3 months severance pay.
They didn't have to do that.
They paid him for all the vacation time he didn't use.
We can cash out our 401k plan and stop
losing money on it.
My self, and my children are pretty healthy,
so not having insurance is not that
big of a deal.
Because my kids and I busted our butts over
the summer fund raising at the race track
I have all the money needed to
pay for his hockey season.
I keep grasping for silver strings that line
this thick black cloud that
is resting on my heart.
When my dh told me he was one of the 90 that
got fired, I wasn't surprised.
I am not totally freaked out.....
but
The longer he is at home
the greater
the chances are that this
already dysfunctional marriage
will collapse.
Please, pray for me.
My kids are watching.
Thanksgiving Trouble
Do you think a husband should talk to his wife about who is coming to Thanksgiving dinner before anyone else(his mom)?? I found out from my mother-in-law that my husbands cousin , her hubby and 3 children are coming to dinner. I asked hubby why did he not tell me me? He told me I was making a big deal over nothing. I said no ,but as your wife I should find out from you not your mom leaving a message as to who is coming to dinner. As it is his mom is telling me when she will be here staying in a hotel , for how many days and when hubbies grandma will be here(our house) and how many days she will stay with us for me to care for !!
I can not care for his grandma by my self, the girls will have to help. My leg is still broken after 11 months, I have to have more surgery, I walk with a limp and am not anywhere near as strong as I was. How am I to pick up and carry his grandma in and out of the tub to giver her a bath and pick her up when she falls?? I love his grandma , and will do my best.
Oh well, God Bless, mj
Changes in the plan- its okay.
Remember when I said my menu plan was more of a set of guidelines?
We didn’t have the monkey bread on Monday as some family members were having issues at the dinner table and we decided it would be best to all go to bed early.
Yesterday evening we had an impromptu trip to Menards for some replacement pipes and fittings for the kitchen sink.
I should probably add here that yesterday, on my list of Things I Hadn’t Planned On Doing (remember this?) was scrubbing ¾ of the kitchen floor.
On my hands and knees.
Why only ¾? Because Flylady says that housework- even when done incorrectly (or in my case not completely) still blesses your family.
Huh?
Well, we’ve got skiffs of snow, layers of mud and leaves and 3 kids who are constantly tramping in afore mentioned bits of nature. And with more snow on the way- I quickly decided that the high traffic door to door path in the kitchen could stay as is. My wrists and knees muttering protests helped to ease my conscience greatly.
Anyhoo, I quickly decided to make the most of trip by trying to do next week’s shopping since Aldi’s is just down the road. This is still a pantry week but being ever frugal-minded . . . . not to mention I’ve now checked off something from next week’s To Do List . . . .
This of course would all be taking place during evening dining time. No quick Mickey-D’s stop for us though- I’m sticking to my pantry budget week.
I quickly put together mini-sandwiches with leftover chicken salad and other lunch meats we always keep on hand, tossed some Clementine oranges in the bag, napkins, plates (just in case) and a still-warm-just-sliced loaf of chocolate cherry friendship bread. Voila.
Light dinner on the road.
I also grabbed the current family read-aloud: The Fighting Ground by Avi- very intense and riveting.
We whipped through Aldi’s in record time- the kids have the loading and unloading and packaging routine down pat. It was fun to watch Mr. Steady marvel at them. As for Menards, Mr. Steady looked for the things on his list- when a man goes to a store like that- he’s always got more things on his list than the thing that necessitated the going to the store in the first place—anyway- the kiddos and I enjoyed the Christmas displays- the trees plus the little ceramic villages.
This then lead to the kidlets asking for a Christmas movie for watching after we got home. Mickey’s Christmas Carol.
And so while it wasn’t the dinner or the evening I had envisioned for us- it was still quality family time.
And that’s what matters most.
Well, that and sticking to the pantry budget.
Garden Jobs by the Month
I really enjoy my Old Farmer's Almanac newsletter and I have learned so much from it. Today's newsletter offered and link to "Gardening Jobs by the Month," which is of interest to me as a novice gardener. So many of those of you that I've spoken to lately are considering either planting a kitchen garden next year or expanding the one you already keep, so I thought you might benfit from this information, too. Here's the link:

TACKY or frugal smarts?
Tackiness vs. simplicity
poor etiquette vs. saving $$ and a tree or two
We send out quite a few Christmas cards each year. Last year I was able to save some pennies by making Christmas postcards to send out- saved by making them myself and saved on postage.
This year the budget is even tighter.
So------ I’m thinking of sending Christmas greetings via e-cards through Dayspring.
I must ask- Is this a big no-no on the etiquette scale?
Will I be vilified?
Of course, I can’t do all my cards this way as there are still some people on my list that don’t have email but I could cut my list way down.
By my calculations, I could save myself $20 easily.
I don’t know about you but $20 is a lot of cash here—in fact, that’s half the weekly grocery budget!

August was a rough month for me. I only preserved one entry.
August is when things started going down hill. August is when I started noticing.
September 08

October 08
My goals....desperately trying to stay on track.
The economy is spiraling out of control.
Trying to stay on target with Jesus.
Trying to find the silver lining.
Showing that I am wearing down quickly..........
November 08
2 of my 4 wheels have popped off.
There is SO much said and even more NOT said in my blogs.
I am in a knife shop, as an F5 tornado blows thru.
The storm itself can kill me......but it's the debris flying around at high speed that is more likely to do me in!!
I am walking across a swinging bridge in the thick fog.
The boards are creaking and cracking and breaking.
I don't know if my next step is certain death?
I don't know if my next step is going to fall through and leave me hanging.
I don't know if my next step is solid ground, and safety.
I don't do well with uncertainties. Who does?
I have deleted SO MANY blogs.........because I just couldn't stand myself. Because that's who I am blogging for, me. And if I couldn't stand it..........shew wee what a stench.
I am not out of the woods.
August was the down hill portion of this roller coaster ride.
Unfortunately, it's November, and I am still moving down.........at an incredible rate of speed. There is no light at the end of the tunnel ( not even the ever present freight train :-) and there is no sign of an upward portion.
Bear with me.
Ditch me and don't read me.
Whatever works for you.
Affirmation is nice!!
Yesterday marked the 90th day I have been on my second job!
Review time.
My boss gave me "exceeds expectations" on performance, then went on to compliment my work ethic, and my cleanliness.
It's nice when someone notices your hard work, and effort.
I had a smile on my face for an hour!!!
The other good news is that my friend who has been out of the country for 3 weeks...........will be home tomorrow.
I miss her so much!!
