Going Greek?

Woot! The Greek Festival

Me and the Daveman went to the Greek Festival at the Greek Orthodox Church here in Nashville last night.. had a good time .. its small as in unless you like to eat, shop or you have kids... or you like Greek music or you like Greek dancing .. lol.. and it was PACKED.. they where parking across the road at another Church and walking across Franklin Rd.. Had a policewomen out there directing traffic which was nice if you where trying to get in or leave..

Ate some good food.. Ate something that was a slice of some type of cheese that was pan fried w/ brandy and a squeeze of lemon.. w/ a little flat bread.. yummy!!

even better sweets :) .. ate the best Wedding Cooking ( thats what I call them )it was HUGH..powder sugar everywhere.. but worth it.. it was homemade.. all the bake goods where ..
I bought a loaf of sweetbread.. this large round dough thing that has been dipped in honey..
an asst. pack of diffrent greek cookies .. all made by these little old greek women lol..

Other shopping wise had to be window shopping but very pretty.. Found some amber that I wanted to roll in .. but pricey..

Theres a booth in the back that was selling Greek statues and pottery.. very pretty..
A food booth that was selling Greek foods like Olive Oil,package pastas and such.. wish I had spent more time being nosey  there lol..

But the best was yet to come..

They where letting folks go into the Church itself.. its small but oh my Gods.. it is beautiful.. you know me I was raised Bapitist we don't have churches like this

You could tell this was a sacred place.. that it was holy.. and I was blown away..
I don't know how Greek Orthodox compare church wise w/ Catholics..I've never been in a Catholic Church..but I know now what Spiritualrose ( r/l friend of mine ) talks about when she goes to Mass..
There was a gentlman there from the Church who was talking about their services which I think was a nice touch.. answering questions and such..
Very nice folks there at the Church..
Candles where everywhere.. folks where donating 5 bucks for a 7 day candle to lite and sit ont the ledge by the altar... there where bees wax rolled candles that you could make a donation to light and stick in these box type things that had the inprint of the cross in the sand.. they where all lite..
We where walking out of the santurary when I looked over to side and there she was .. tucked away in a corner ..it was an altar/Icon of Mary...but you know what? She may have been tucked away in a corner..but she had candles lit under her.. quite a few in fact.. it made me feel good..

I believe that Holy Women should be brought forth in any church..

All in all a great time!

Along the lines of goals for the year and beyond

Frugality is the essence of today's tip. All of us
have grandparents and great-grandparents that made
it through the Great Depression, and this advice
comes directly from them. Perhaps I should start
by saying. . . "Your grandparents called and told
me to tell you 'waste not, want not'. . ."

REDUCE: In the words of one popular sustainability
campaign - Use Less Stuff! You are NOT your stuff.
Your stuff is NOT you. You do NOT need an
ever-increasing pile of stuff to have a nice life.
Indeed, an ever-increasing pile of stuff, even if
it is nice, expensive stuff, is a serious threat
to the quality of your life. The purpose of life
is not the accumulation of stuff. Enough stuff
already! Just Use Less Stuff. Teach your kids to
Just Use Less Stuff. (And teach them well.)

REUSE: Reuse the stuff you already have. Don't use
it once or twice and then wrap it carefully in
black plastic and throw it away to be buried in a
landfill. Future archeologists already have enough
stuff to sort through from this era. They do not
need yours. After you eat the pickles, reuse the
jar. Store seeds, macaroni, beans, peas, corn,
flour in it. Drink home-brewed beer from it. Or
home-brewed soda pop. Or water. Be creative and
adaptable.

RECYCLE: If you just can't find another use for
something in your household, RECYCLE! This can
include putting appropriate stuff in the recycling
containers provided by your city's solid "waste"
service. But it can also include donating useful
items to charities, thrift stores, or gifting them
to other people. Have a garage sale! Or have a
gift event (put everything out like a garage sale,
only put a sign up - "FREE STUFF"). Metals can be
sold at recycling centers. In most areas, you can
put metals out on the curb and they will be picked
up by roadside recyclers and taken to metal
recycling companies.

REPAIR: These days, people often just replace
something that simply needs repair. We think this
is "cheaper", but that's because many costs are
externalized. Some items are manufactured in a way
that makes it impossible to repair them. Avoid
buying such items. Find good local repair people
and support them with your business.

MAKE IT OVER: Reinvent new uses for items. For
example, I wanted a pot hanger for my kitchen. So
I rustled around among my stuff, and found the
grate of an outdoor grill and some lengths of
chain. All that I had to actually buy was some
u-bolts, and voila, I have a nice pot hanger in my
kitchen. Pots and pans hang from S hooks that we
made from coat-hangers. When we need something,
often our first impulse is to rush to the store
and buy it. The sustainability choice, however, is
to make "buying something new" your LAST resort.
First ask yourself if this is something you really
need. Second, see if you have the "raw materials"
to make over something. Next, see if you can find
it in the "after market" (thrift stores, garage
sales, flea markets, etc.) Only as a last resort
should you go to the store and buy something new.

MAKE DO and DO WITHOUT: EEK! How can you say this!
We are consumers! We have a duty to consume! That,
of course, is the attitude that brought us to the
present situation. Learning to do without,
learning to make do with what we have, are
important sustainability disciplines. Life has
limits and boundaries, we should get used to that
fact. And this isn't negative, either. Less stuff
means less work. Everything takes maintenance. It
has to be cleaned. It has to be stored. If you
want it then you have to find it. The more stuff
you have, the more time you will spend cleaning,
storing, and finding. Life is short, why spend it
cleaning, storing, and finding a bunch of stuff?

++++++++

SUMMARY: Do not buy so much stuff, do not store so
much stuff, do not live with so much stuff, do not
haul around so much stuff, do not use so much
stuff, and do not throw away so much stuff and
bury so much stuff in the ground, where it becomes
useless waste.

Enjoy more!

"The Wild Geese"

Horseback on Sunday morning,
harvest over, we taste persimmon
and wild grape, sharp sweet
of summer's end. In time's maze
over the fall fields, we name names
that went west from here, names
that rest on graves. We open
a persimmon seed to find the tree
that stands in promise,
pale, in the seed's marrow.
Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear,
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here. And we pray, not
for new earth or heaven, but to be
quiet in heart, and in eye
clear. What we need is here.

Enjoy!

Think Like a Tree

by Karen I. Shragg

Soak up the sun
Affirm life's magic
Be graceful in the wind
Stand tall after a storm
Feel refreshed after it rains
Grow strong without notice
Be prepared for each season
Provide shelter to strangers
Hang tough through a cold spell
Emerge renewed at the first signs of spring
Stay deeply rooted while reaching for the sky
Be still long enough to
hear your own leaves rustling

Like my new icon?

It reminds me of me lol..

Hope everyone had a blessed holiday... I had 4 days off !! Woot! .. Worked 3 of those on the house.. bleah.. but the bedroom looks nice..the hall way is painted.. :)

Life is getting settled day by day... Mom's death in Feb.. friend of mine murder 3 weeks ago..and quite few other "endings" I'm being to believe that Spirit is moving things out of the way to make room for growth..

Not that Mom and Mikes death was a good thing.. but it has made me stop and think about growth.. and we do our most growing when we endure pain and confusion.. we come out on the other side of the pain with brand new eyes..

After alot of thought and soul searching my spiritual life has taken a turn.. its not where I thougth it was going to go.. or I'm at where I though I would be. And I'm ok w/ that..:)

For the first time my soul is coming to be content..still learning ..still growing .. but that will not change..

Spirit and I co-create my life and the eyes that I see the world ... as soon as I let things flow.. my life started to fall into place..

Believe or not Buddhism has helped me more than anything..

Also this year so far has been about forgiveness.. its hard for me to forgive, but I am learning..

I've come in contact w/ the Peak Oil group here in town.. WONDERFUL group of folks.. I've found folks that have most of the same interest I have.. In fact a gentleman in the group is doing the whole Urban Homesteading thing here in town.. he has offer for me to come by and pick his brain.. :) woot..

So you will be seeing alot of stuff on Peak Oil and all that comes with it here....

Other than that.. I miss my Mom ALOT.. its true once you lose you Mother you lose your best friend..

But I know she's with my sister and my faimly.. and with her Lord.. that makes it bearable..

So thats a quick update on what's been going on in my world..

I'm now doing two blogs!!! Here and Livejournal .. ifin ya want to take a look I'm under

friggawomen there ...

Have a blessed week!
