I just realized that I have been blogging here for 2 years.  I started in Jan. of 2006, right after my DH came home from Iraq, Dec. 28,2005.  It had just been the toughest year of my entire life.  We were starting a new journey to self sufficientcy and growing towards a goal of debt free living.  During one of my searches on homesteading, I found homesteadblogger.com.  At that time Carla was the editor.  Carla was and still is a wealth of information on homesteading.  She had posts about everything from keeping animals, growing and putting by food, making your own cleaners and soaps, to living a debt free more green life.  Oh, how I miss those days.  Then there was Glenda.  She hasn't posted here in a year but her posts are still there and you could glean a ton from them.  There have been so many interesting things posted here in the last 2 years regarding homesteading.  I feel like sometimes we get away from the true point of this forum, homesteading.  It's not just keeping a house.  It's growing your own food to put by, learning to be more self sufficient, growing towards a debt free life, keeping animals and just an overall sense of making do.  However, even though at times I feel like we are taking a different course than the original intent, I have learned a ton of info.  for my home.  There are still some of us around from the beginning and I hope we continue on learning and maybe even teaching a little.

I have gone back to see some of those who still post here regularly from two years ago and here are a few: PatinTn., Crewchief, Crystal MillerDebi, Abundant Blessings, Deanna, Laura, Maa, and I could go on but you know them all.

I guess my reason for being all nostalgic is that there has been some talk of people being told to remove posts and so forth.  To be perfectly honest I was one who thought that some things that were posted here this weekend, just should have been dealt with at home.  However, after much contemplation on the subject, I have now thought that I don't want anyone telling me what I can and cannot post on my blog.  We do still live in the land of the free.  The problem is not in what someone else posts but in me, if I read it!!!  I don't think anyone here should tell another person to remove their post or it will be removed.  That is not the spirit of this forum.  I have seen many things over the years that I have thought have no place on a HOMESTEAD forum but I can choose to just go on to the next post.  I too, have posted some fluff stuff that doesn't pertain to the homestead life and I will again.LOL  I appreciate all of you who contribute such amazing things to the realm we choose to live in.  I can't wait to read about all the plans for gardens coming up, the raising of new baby chicks, and I know there will be a few of you who purchase a pig to feed out.  I don't know if we will get our pig this spring but I hope by next spring to join you in this venture.

I hope you all have a great day!!

Blessings,

Trixi

You made some good points with this post. I know I am one that posts stuff that isn't related to homesteading sometimes, however, my blog is about my life not just my homestead. So, I post about my life and leave it to others to read it or not. I think you are right, we need to be responsible for ourselves and what we choose to read or not. If I only want to read about homestead issues, than that is all I should spend my time on. If I enjoy being encouraged in other areas, I think that should be okay too. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this subject.
Blessings,
Rashel

I appreciated your post today.

I love the posts here about country living, but I guess homesteading can be so many different things to different people. I do like the fact that "home" is in the beginning of the word homesteading and I believe the home is one of the most important institutions of our country. It is hard to say that any post is out of place in a forum dealing with the home life of folks.

I don't mind posts about people's day to day lives, but I often find myself passing over most of them. I think journaling can help make those individuals into more thoughtful managers of their own homes and will likely benefit them. even if I don't always read them. Some of the posts will help the writer more than us readers, but that is ok.

I enjoy your blog! Keep up the good writing.

Well said

I too am grateful for the Homestead site, When I first moved over here from the Sister site Homeschool blogger, I was totally overwhelmed with the Home Steading idea, then I began to wonder if I did the right thing because...well I dont live on acreage, or have farm animals, how in the world will I relate to these folks with out bringing up past childhood living on a 20 acre farm, when my mom and step dad were still married cause as of current I am a SAHM and Wife to a Sgt in the Army and live in on post housing. But you know I found alot more than just coveting for that farm life, I found the blessings in which the Lord gave me to look beyond what we dont "have" right now, and that is the wealth of Information I have read, and researched while scoping out other peoples posts on how to even set up my own Pantry, Keeping my Lord First, My Family Second and the world last. I have been so inspired by each and everyones different posts, that I am quite sure my few close friends have begun to call me a quack.lol. Its all good because I have also learned when to appreciate that to what we already have versus what we do not have at this time in our season of life... Great post, good comments and so full of enlightment thank you all for everything you have posted in each of your blogs.

Trixi ~~

This is a wonderful blogging community... and yes I do think it is a community -- that is what makes it special! :) I have blogged at blogspot and word press and there is no community there.. to me community is at the "heart" of homesteading....... a going back to the old fashioned values of community, friendship, etc. I know this is not "real life" for us, but I do gain so much from the ladies here.

Yes at time I find that there are posts that I wonder where they came from and why they are here, but I can choose to not read them or I can choose to learn from others and what they are going thru.

I believe overall we are a very supportive community here, we pray for each other, we care about each other, not just the homsteading things, but we care about how we each are really doing.....

This is a very special and rare thing in the world of the world wide web...... and like I said I believe it's at the heart of homesteading!

I also know that this is a very clean blog host, so many may come here that don't blog per say but come because they want a safe and clean place to blog. I welcome them here - even though their posts may not be "homesteady".. but I realize they need a place to come to share that is safe and godly.

I find that HSB is so much more than homesteading things.....it's about frienship community faith. and our lives......

I for one am so very richly blessed by you and all the lovely ladies here! You are precious! I hope to spend many more years blogging here! I can't imagine blogging anywhere else!

Gloria,
As with everything you say and write, I could not have said it better myself. You nailed it on the head. I feel like this is a community for me, as well.
Blessings,

this too shall pass (yet again...)

We've all been around long enough to have seen this 'trend' come and go several times over the past years here. Someone has a problem with what they have read...it's too personal, it's too religious, it's not the least bit homesteady, etc. Folks jump on the bandwagon and things get rather antsy around here for a while. Then life goes back to whatever our normal is here again...for a time.

Why the constant repeat? Because we are human. We are what we are, here on our blogs and in our flesh. We all have parts of us that speak to homesteading...that's how we ended up here, otherwise we could have gone to Blogger, Xanga, etc.

There isn't a 'definition' of a homestead or a homesteader in this day and age. They just don't exist in some created bubble. Homesteading for most folks here, those still hanging in and those who have left, is just DAILY LIFE. It's dirty dishes, it's laundry, it's a myriad of relationships between husband and wife, mother and child, kindred spirit to kindred spirit. It's woven into our daily existence...our daily tasks, both chosen and expected; it's in our training of ourselves and our children; it's in what we eat and how we prepare it and where it came from. It's not something separated...it's just part of who and what we are daily. For some it's full of religion because that is who we are. For others, it is far removed from religion because that is who they are.

There just isn't an answer to what is a homestead and who is a homesteader. Rehashing it every handful of months isn't going to somehow force a nailed-down definition. We need to think of blogland here as Missouri...or Oklahoma and adopt a state motto....

if you don't agree with ________ just stick around a few days and it will change.

I would have to agree with Gloria and Deanna, two ladies I most highly respect here on HSB. But, I would also add that I have yet to see a blogger here that fits my own personal definition of homesteader. I only see bits and pieces here and there. I just really think it is a personal thing and that "personal thing" is what shows up on our blogs.

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
