Have you ever heard of Sacred Harp singing?

Last night we watched a PBS documentary on Sacred Harp singing. It is a form of singing of scripture based type hymns using shaped notes. It was amazing. Here is a site of a seven year documentary of it. It is very interesting. Sacred Harp singing are singings primarily in the South that take place usually in a churc. When I looked up where they are it seems primarily in the Primitive Baptist Church. I don't know anything about Primitive Baptist. The music is also all acappella. My children thought it was strange but I thought it was beautiful. Do any of you know anything about this?

Trixi

Blessings Trixi, I checked out the sites and they are very informative. I have and didn't know it heard this type of music from Shaker Village at Mount Pleasant in Harrodsburg Ky. I live about 40 mins from there and vist quite often. They have the Mount Pleasant singers to come for special occasions and that is when they sing like this. It is told that the Shakers when in the meeting house [church] were heard for miles away. It really got the attention of the towns people. Some came just to see what was going on. Oh yeah they all shook as they sang like shaking the evil spirits off of them while they sang so that is the real attention getter. They were given that name because of that by outsiders. They accepted it for it is apart of them. You may know about them but just incase you didn't wanted to tell you. I love hearing the music. It brings unity and harmony in the atmosphere I believe. A sense of peace! Thanks for sharing! Blessings Always, rilda

baby it's cold outside.........
at least for us here down South !!!
We are still hanging around 21 or 22 degrees and a windchill of about 15 !!!
Spring is coming, right?
About the sleet, the Memphis channel for NBC is trying to say it is nothing, but when I went to the store for milk and bread, (just in case), it was "flurrying" around me.
Well, we did want some winter weather, we just forgot to say how "winter".
Stay warm,
Pat

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
