Sewing machine delimma's

Well, I am looking at sewing machines. Mine at times gives me fits. It is just a cheap Brother machine that I got at WalMart many moons ago. I have been looking at machines online and would love to know what you all have or think is the best. Homesteadmomma is doing a great tutorial on quilting which is something I have been wanting to learn for a while. As much as I would like to, I don't know that I will ever get up to Deanna's for a tutoring lesson. I just have to many ties to the home, which is the way I like it. I can make a simple block but I want to learn so much more. However, with my machine I am afraid I may need to upgrade a bit. Now, don't get me wrong, I wont be spending thousands of dollars but I can get a basic Baby Lock or Bernina resonably enough. I don't need any fancy stuff like embroidery and such, keep in mind we are simple people here doing simple things.LOL I would love to know what you think about different machines.
Blessings,
Trixi

Hi Trixi-
I had a Brother too and I had lots of problems with it. I still can't afford a high end machine but last year My husband purchased a very simple manual ( non - computer) Singer for me. It has been wonderful. I used to have a really old JC Penny's machine given to me by my mother in law but it got to the point where it was so loud and was bouncing off of the table. It was a sight for sure. I have heard only good things about Bernina machines. If I could afford one Bernina would be what I would purchase.

You know I have thought about a Singer in the past. I will have to look at that. I am not one to spend a lot of money on anything.
Blessings,
Trixi

My Machine

Is a white. I also started with an OLD Kenmore... weighs a ton as it is all metal. That worked great, but needs some tuning and dh didn't want to tune my mother's old machine, so I got a brother... it was ok, but then started breaking needles over and over and over. I got tired of rethreading the machine and buying needles. A couple years ago JoAnn fabrics had a $275 white machine on sale for $75 on Black Friday. I ran over and got one. I am so glad I did. It hums so nicely and I just love it. I don't know how to do all the extras that I can do, yet, but I know that my basic sewing is so much less stressful knowing that my machine is going to work and if I rethread the machine it is because I WANT to rethread the machine! LOL
Warmly, ~Melissa

Thank you Melissa. I have not even heard of this brand.

I have two Husqvarnas. A new one and one that's 20 years old. I love them. Mine have been very dependable machines. Do you have a freecycle there? I often see sewing machines on our freecycle site.

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
