What do you need to run a homestead?

Citysteader posted a similar post on homestead equipment and I thought it was a neat topic of discussion.
~~What are must haves for your homestead? Mine are:
1. Bible- It sets the mood and direction for our whole homestead life.
2.Laying Hens- Right now we have 10 and get about 4-5 eggs a day in winter. I hope to add atleast 5-10 more in the spring.
3.Cast Iron cookware- I love my cast iron skillets.
4.Garden- We love a huge garden and I love to can and freeze.
5.Deep Freezer-Where else would I put all of those fresh veggies?
6.My sewing machine- It's not a great one but it will do what I need.
7.Clothsline- I don't have mine up at this new house but it will be by spring. I love clothes hung out on a line. I don't know that there is anything else that says simplicity more than a clothsline.
8.Grain mill- can't live without fresh bread.
9.My breadmaker
There are so many more but that's a start.
~~What books are a must have for your homestead?
1.Back to Basics by Reader's Digest
2.Storey's Basic Country Skills
3.Barnyard in Your Backyard
4.The Encyclopedia of Country Living
5.The How to Herb Book its a very simple guide to herbs
6.Ball Blue Book of Preserving
Again, I could go on and on.
~~Here is my wishlist for the Homestead what is yours?
1. A woodburning stove or cookstove
2. To be a little more of the grid
3. To find the piece of land where we will stay
4. A bosch mixer
~~How much land do you think you need for your homestead?
I would like 10 acres. I want to make sure we are good stewards and I don't know that we would really use more than that. We have 2 horses that need atleast 4 acres and then the other 6 would be for my garden, chickens, a pig to feed out, meat sheep and possibly a milk cow.
I hope some of you post your own answers. I would love to see them.
Blessings,
Trixi

Trixi,
Question about your cast iron. Do you use dishwashing liquid soap? I've heard conflicting reports. If so, which one?
Thank you for your post!
Blessings,

I do not. I just use very warm water and a nonabrasive scrubber. Then I dry it with a towel and put it in a warm oven for a few minutes to make sure it is dry. Sometimes I put more oil on it to reseason.

I am sure you could work out a substution for the sugar. Honey with fruit juice maybe...you would just have to try it and get the amounts right. But I agree, I am also looking for sugar subs and getting away from so much processed everything, sugar included!

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
