To do Christmas or not.........

Before I ruffle anyone, let me tell you we do Christmas here. Even though I see clearly that we probably should be investigating not doing it, I don't know how we could ever get rid of it. Our families would disown us. It would be the last straw. However, that does not make it any righter. I have studied this topic a little bit and here are some very interesting sites:
http://www.rapidnet.com/~jbeard/bdm/Psychology/xmas/celeb.htm
And this is where my search began:
http://www.rapidnet.com/~jbeard/bdm/Psychology/xmas/xmas_car.htm
The whole discussion started with some hymn/carols that we sing every year, like "Angels We Have Heard On High" , well it says the Angels were singing. Well, that is not Biblically accurate as the Word of God does not say that Angels sang. Look it up. Then there is "O Come All You Faithful"(one of my favorites) well it says King of Angels which is almost blasphemist if it's not blasphemist, as Jesus most certainly did not come as king of Angels. He is King of the Jews, King of Kings and King of All not just Angels. Now as you are saying, come on what's the big deal. That is what I said at first but then Dh and I got to talking about how these Hymns/Carols shape our doctrine, take the Angels singing thing. I was convinced that Angels sang as they rejoiced. However, when we got out our Bibles and studied it, I found they did not. It just goes to show how powerful these hymns/carols can be to shaping our doctrine. I think it's very important that the songs we are singing and lifting up to the Lord in worship are at the least Biblically accurate. Anyway, its just food for thought. Let me know what you think...
Blessings In Him,

hmmm...... definate food for thought trixi...... I have studied the backround of christmas..... and it's roots are pagan... meaning when Christianity began, the Catholic clergy tried to convert the new converts from their pagan holidays and that is how they came to adopt christmas -- which falls at the same time as winter solitce....... For years in our country - in the time of the pilgrims and puritans -- they did not celebrate christmas....... they wanted to seperate themselves from the English traditions ( which involved drinking and partying).... not only that but most of our traditions are pagan - such as the yule log, christmas tree, etc.
We have looked at the traditions and such and realize that most of what we consider christmas today was never practiced years ago by deeply spiritual people... and yes some of the carols are incorrect!
food for thought,
gloria

Blessings! I have seen what you are saying. I suppose to me it is being child like about the Santa, tree and things. It is a serious thing though about the birth. Choosing to believe the birth is real is a matter of reality. Focusing on that brings the truth closer to home for me. Those of other ages didn't see or understand what we as believers now do. They will be judged according to the thing that was believed during that age. We have came far as far as knowing the truth which sets us free in many areas for we are more open to the things not understood fully now more than ever. What I am trying to say is . If God shows you something it is because YOU are ready to see it. When He shows you then you will believe it. Many think you are crazy but keep on seeking and you will find the answers to what you need answering. If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything. Blessings and God's best to you and yours. *U* Rilda

So many are grossly offended by rock music (as they should be in most cases :-) yet, like you have pointed out, sing things that are just not true.......and too God!! People get so caught up in "feelings".
This would be a great topic to discuss next week or later. I would love to trade information with others who feel led to stop celebrating christmas, and begin celebrating the Commanded Biblical Feasts!!
I talked with our kids yesterday about doing things different next year........I will tell you about it next week!!

I can't wait to here what you have come up with.

I think of course in my own opinion, alot of folks are having some true soul searching lessons done in their lives, as you may know in my post about what was troubling my heart at this time of Christmas, I am finding more and more reasons to let go of the Christmas idea, and it is true our ready is not everyones ready and the Lord will work on everyone in His own way. Next years season will be different for us, and when we tell the kids the truth about the Santa man and tooth fairy girl and the easter bunny in the few days ahead(Hubby is wanting us to wait till after Christmas, so I at least will give him that, cause if God appointed me head of house.lol I would have been telling the kids NOW .lol, all in good time right.
I did not know this about the carols/hymns as some of those you listed are my favorite too. Thank you for this wonderful and thought provoking post!

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
