For those of you who are great homesteaders,you mine as well just stop reading,because you already know all of this....

But for the rest of us who are gleaning daily, I got two new books from the library.

Storey's Basic Country Skills A Practical Guide to Self-Reliance by John and Martha Storey

Barnyard in Your Backyard, A beginner's guide to raising chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, goats, sheep and cattle by Gail Damerow

The Barnyard in Your Backyard book is great for checking out from time to time but the Storey's Basic Country Skills is one to purchase for the home library.  I love this book.  It has everything you could ever need to know for the homestead.  They also recommend other books on different topics.  I will be looking for it on Ebay and Amazon.

Blessings,

Trixi

That is funny that you mention both of these books. I used to check out the Barnyard book in FL all of the time, so much so that I finally bought a copy.
Now the Storey's guide I've looked at a few times didn't really like it all that much. I might have to go look at it again.
Do you have Carla Emery's book? Now that is one that you must own, full of everything Homesteady (is that a word?)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Ofcourse, that is a word. It's funny how people see different things. I liked Storey's because it had everything from animals to gardening and canning. We will never have a lot of animals but we will always have a huge garden and do a lot of preserving the harvest. As for Carla Emery's book, I don't have it but have looked at it and do need to get a copy. I think Storey's is a lot like hers.
****************Hey Trixi,
Maybe that's why I didn't care for the Storey's book, when I first found it, I had already looked at Carla's so many times. There is another one that I really like by John Seymour(I think that's how it's spelled) his book is from an English point of few but tons of wonderful information none the less. I also own that one. Amazon is a great place to find these books used reasonable cheap. Can you tell that I love books!!! I know that we have way to many, but I look at my homesteading books all of the time.
Blessings,
Debi
We all need to constantly be gleaning from resources to work our homesteads! I don't think we ever get to a point that we don't need to read or glean from others.. that's what makes a homestead so succesful... when it is inhabbited by those that are constantly growing and learning! Have a wonderful day dear friend!! With love, Mrs. Joseph Wood
I am actually going to refer your post to this to tractorchick72, her and the family are trying to get established on their own as well. Thanks for sharing this because you never know who it might help.
I have the one from Carla E.
I like it a lot. I have looked at the one from Storey's and wondered if it would be a good buy.
If you like it, then I might like to get it also,.
Let us know what you think about it.
“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
