I have a chicken question....

Ok, I have 10 laying hens and 1 rooster. About 6 of my layers are laying and the other 4 are not quite old enough. I had started getting 4-5 eggs a day. Which works perfectly for our family. However, now with the days getting shorter they are slacking off. I am wanting to do an artificial light system on a timer. Do any of you do this and how is it working out?
I am planning on ordering 25 more chicks in February and atleast double my flock. I hope to raise some to sell, as well.
Blessings,
Trixi

Hi , enjoying your blog, much more to read. Thank you for the visit. We took a trip last month and slept in tipis, great fun , weather was perfect. We try and do some cookouts even in the winter, snow too, everyone stays close to the fire, lol
Say on your chickens I think the lighting would be good too. We have very old hens and I don't want them to over work, so not letting them have the extra lighting, I think they are happy not givings us eggs in the winter., lol
I'm getting more chicks this spring, was going to do this fall but we wanted to take a couple of camping trips, so thats over and now its stayin at the homestead. Happy Hoildays to you and your family, I'll be over for more visits : )

I haven't down here, but we always did up north. I set the lighting up in the coop and ran it off a timer so I could regulate the 14 hours a day. So far, down here, all we've done is set up a light on a drop cord, hung from the ceiling, and I plug it in in the evening with the barn lighting, then before bed, we turn it off from inside the house.
We also had to run a water heater base in the winter....boy, those ladies would roost all over that waterer on the really cold nights! It was quite the site to see them first thing in the morning all huddled around and on top of that water jug!
Your husband and Debi's (rldranch) must be at the same training -- he had to go play army this weekend also.

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
