Training our Daughters
Posted on Monday, March 20, 2006 at 09:49 - Post Comment

This topic is very dear to me. I was raised by a single mother, who was very independent. She raised two very independent daughters and a son who married a very career oriented, independent woman. I won't go into if this is right or wrong. I will tell you, for me, I choose to live by Proverbs 31 and Titus 2. It has been very hard for me and my marriage to learn to be subject to my husband. I would say today that with God's help I am winning the battle but 15 years ago, it was a nightmare. This is being mild. The decisions we made even 9 years ago were based on being a strongly independent woman. I would love to save my girls some of these same mistakes.
I am wanting to start a Keeper's at home type course with my girls. I am leaning towards two, Traing our Daughter's to be Keepers at Home and Far Above Rubies. I would love to hear what some of you use or have used and what you think or these two.
Blessings,
Trixi
What a coincidence!

I just happen to be using BOTH with my teen daughters! However we are NOT on the 4 year or 7 year plan that they recommend. I'm picking and choosing and combining from each one. Here's what I've done...
I start high school level academics in 8th grade...with some life skills things along the way. When their Senior year rolls around, that Senior spends the entire year doing life skills activities (my oldest is a Senior now and it's working great!). It had come to my attention over our many years of homeschooling, that so many homeschoolers are so obsessed with academics, that their kids couldn't even fry an egg. I also have the desire for my girls to be godly keepers of their homes. So, I decided quite a while back to take a year to concentrate on life skills.
As I said, I combine both the Training Our Daughters and Far Above Rubies. When I got the FAR curriculum, it was far more academic/research oriented than I had anticipated - so ordered the TOD. When I got that, it was very project oriented. Sooooo - I combine the two and it works out very well. I have also just gotten Martha Greene's (Marmee's) Treasury of Vintage Homekeeping Skills! OH MY!!! This is a fabulous resource!!!!!!!!!
I am working on a new column for TOS that will be called "The Lesson Planner" and I will be deeply reviewing these, and other, items. Hope you will look for it in the Winter 2007 issue!
I guess my recommendation, for a life skills curriculum, I would recommend using FAR and TOD together if you can.
Hope this helps!
Blessings from Ohio, Kim Wolf<><

Visit all the Training our Daughters to be Keepers at Home sites you can find online and GLEAN information ;o) That's how we started -- we found a site listing the topics covered in the book itself and started our own file of tidbits, directions and projects. It grows from there :o) There are so many resources out there to get you started!!
Have you checked into starting your own group for Keepers of The Faith??? That would be perfect for your small fellowship...we do ours as a family group and it's been fun. It is a Christian Girl Scouts (and they have one for boys as well!)

I have had the same problem, almost.

I understand where you are coming from. I was raised by my grandmother because my parents were not "capable" of doing it themselves. My grandmother was a very independent woman, married to a career army man who was not there much of the time. She raised me to never depend on any man, my grandfather left her after 35 years of "marriage". Anyway, you can see how this would affect me for dating purposes and especially when I got married. My daughter is only three right now, so that is a ways off for me. However, I am already planning for it. I will use the Bible as the basis for her education and supplement it with some very informative curriculum (lots of hands-on). Maybe by then I will have written the curriculum myself, who knows.

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
