My daughter seems to be struggling!!

I have a 14 year old daughter who, let me begin by saying, is very smart.  We have been homeschooling now for about 5 years before that we were all at a Christian School where I taught.  I want to say that we were convicted about home schooling and being a more home centered family.  We are committed to homeschooling for the long haul.  However, my daughter is feeling very overwhelmed by English.  She is in 8th grade and is working through the 8th grade Rod and Staff book.  I can not recommend Rod and Staff English high enough.  It is great!!!  But it is tough!!  I dont know whether to look for something else or just get through it the best we can.  She, again, is very smart and I feel like she will be able to figure it out.  Its times like these that she questions homeschooling and I want it to be such a wonderful thing for her.  I want her to desire to do it with her children.  Again, that would be my plan and maybe not the Lord's plan and I so need to keep my eyes on His plan.  I would just like to hear any of your suggestions or struggles.

My other thinking is when do I start focusing on things of the home with my girls and less on the academics.  I also struggle with what I think in this area.  I would love for them to be homemakers and raise families but there again God does not call us all to have families.  Anyway, enough of my ramblings.

God Bless,

Trixi

Homeschool English

What is your daughters learning style? Auditory, hands on, there are others.....If your not sure, do a google.com search for Learning styles, this will give you great insight into the way she learns best, then take the subject area she is struggling with, in this case grammar and find ways to teach it using her learning style.
Rod and Staff is great, but it may need tweaking to suit your daughter. Use it as your guide, and pull in other ways to teach her using her learning style.

As far as being homemakers, I'm not an expert here, but I think as long as they are keeping the home picked up and doing chores and helping with meals and such things, they are learning to keep a home. Not only that, but they are learning by watching you. We incorporate this into our school, for example quilting, we stop math for a week and my daughter and I work on a quilt, it is still math......

Hope this helps!

Ok, so my oldest is only in 2nd grade so I am not really qualified, but I was homeschooled my last two years of high school, does that account for anything? :) I would finish out the year with it...maybe go a little slower (I heard R&S is excellent for English and what I plan to use next year). Maybe give it another 1/2 year or whole next year and if she is still struggling try to find another curriculum or at least find a supplement. You could check out Cozy Grammar ( http://www.splashesfromtheriver.com/) which is kind of like Math U See for English only not a full as full of a curriculum, which might help if she is more of a visual learner...I am not sure what grades it is for, but it might be nice just to take a break and try something different.

Homemaking!

I have a 15 1/2 year old and 11 1/2 year old daughter. My son is 14 1/2.
With the girls, I make it a point to not only 'show them' but 'tell them' little tips.
Like "let's pick up the house before daddy gets home, he has worked hard all day and it's relxing for him to come home to a clean house". Or I will bake with them and let them know how nice it is for daddy to walk thru the door and the first thing is he smellsl something home made! And my son is watching us girls fuss over daddy, and my son sees my dh appreciate it!! I try to "live out" the example, and "speak out" to explain WHY I do it!! That kinda helps solidify it with my kids!

The ONE thing I've always said

since we started homeschooling, is there is NO failing. There are things we take longer with, but we don't move on until it's mastered. Though we have taken breaks to do reviews, or just to change the pace a bit and go back again.
For my DD, it was Math that was her tormenter of a subject. We went back enough to where she could make the transistion better.
Thank you for the welcome, and I loved reading your blog :-)

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
