Sugar and sugar alternatives.... Which are best for you?

I have been studying this topic for a while, as we are trying to get healthier and have a more whole foods diet. Here is a great site, stocked full of useful information.  I am currently using unrefined evaporated cane juice crystals.  It is the same thing that Crystal at the Homemaking Homesteder recommends.  She gave me some great info on this and so far, so good we have been enjoying them.  I want to be able to give my DC a cookie and feel a little better about it.LOL  I haven't quite figured out what my alternative to brown sugar should be.  I bought organic brown sugar but I'm not sure if that means that it is unrefined.  The words refined and high fructose corn syrup have become bad words in our house.LOL  We are on the path to better health and a better life.
Blessings,
Trixi

Sweetners

Posted by deerhollow on Thursday, February 15, 2007 at 12:36 - Link

We are trying to make better food choices too. We use no artifical sweetners like splenda, equal , etc..
We haven't given up brown sugar yet.

Thanks for welcoming me and stopping by my blog.

Sucanat

Have you tried sucanat? I think it is supposed to be unrefined brown sugar. It has more of a molasses flavor so I don't like it for everything. I usually use honey or sucanat with honey.

Have fun experiementing!

I try to limit the sweetners we use, but we do use Really Raw Honey, Rapadura (which is unrefined sugar), and Agave Nectar. I, too, am trying really hard to incorporate a natural, whole foods type of diet. However, like the Mother Goose rhyme, "When I'm good, I'm very, very good, but when I am bad, I am horrid!" ;-)

Blessings,
Carol

thanks for sharing the link. It was very interesting. I've heard it all before... BUT you know the more you hear it... the more you consider it.... I have sucanat at home, although I don't use it much. I recently started buying cane juice crystals... but not sure how to use it so it is just sitting there. LOL. OK, I'm inspired to actually experiment. thanks again.
Warmly, ~Melissa

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
