Saving money by buying groceries once a month....

Dh and I had already been convicted about this subject but after today I am even more convicted.  I went to town today, now granted it was the first time I have been since Saturday.  However, this one trip cost me $60.00.  I had the money that's not the problem.  The problem is that if I were to stay out of WalMart, I would still have atleast $35.00.  Ofcourse, going in to town, I had to go by the bookstore, the fabric store and then on to WalMart.  I had read a post somewhere on here about once a year shopping, earlier in the week, and forwarded it to Dh.  He and I both felt it was too lofty a goal for us.  However, Once a month sounds really good.  Here is a good article on the subject.  I am going to start my list now and Lord willing by the end of the month I will have a good list.  I will go by the commissary for my meat.  I will go to Walmart for my paper products and other neccessities.  I will also make a trip to Ada's and possibly Sam's for my bulk shopping.  I hope to have this list to between $300.00 and $400.00.  I know this probably sounds like a lot but I hope to really stock my pantry well.  As it is right now, I spend anywhere from $150.00 to $200.00 every two weeks now.  However, I go back in between a couple of times and spend anywhere from $50.00 to $100.00.  I think this way I could possibly cut my budget by $100.00 to $200.00 a month.  That would be a huge blessing to my family.  I am going to keep track of what we use during the month of March and will have a better list of what we need for April.  I hope this will be a fun adventure and I will be keeping you posted along the way.  I hope to post my shopping list as well.
Blessings to you all,
Trixi

We do the once a month mega shop trip and then just stop in for milk and fresh fruit 1 or 2 more times during the month. We started this over a year ago and I was amazed at how much I was able to trim off of the food budget. Also if you have a Dollar General store in your area, try it for paper products and cleaning supplies. I saved even more by switching over to that store. It is so satisfying to save on our food budget. Arla

On a bad month we might spend $300 for our family (11 here being fed).
Those bad months would be where I need to replenish the Tp stash, shampoos, and other assorted sundry items.
We mainly shop in bulk...I buy meat by the case when needed at Sam's, the Tp is in a 45 roll case, etc. once stocked on that, I have nothing more really to buy. The grains and such are already in bulk, so we might need the occasional gallon of milk or some such.
I imagine, when broken down for the entire year, I spend more than $300 per month average, but that includes the serious quantity buying once a year (grains, etc.)
I think you can do better :o) I encourage you to play with it all and see what you can come up with :o) WalMart does the price-match stuff...maybe start checking out commissary pricing on things vs WalMart?

This sounds like fun. I have been thinking about stocking up my pantry & freezer really well before my last daycare paycheck comes. This would be a wonderful way to do that :) Please share when you are done how it went :)

You are inspiring. I've been gone all week and am catching up on posts... I have also been thinking this very same thing. I am trying to trim corners, but I see that I need some tweaking... some serious planning and such. Your gentle sharing has given me the gumption to go for it. I'm also thinking of making some frugal, but nummy menus... not wanting to throw out the healthy items... but buying in bulk helps with that... but I've always bought in bulk in sporadic unplanned ways... and using the items always seemed a chore... if I have a plan... perhaps I will be able to use the items more easily and use them for more than just experiments! LoL
Warmly, Melissa

“I want to know one thing,” said John Wesley, “—the way to heaven: how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one book.”
