• Sunday, August 17, 2008 - I Need a Little Hope & Faith in Humanity Right Now!

I've lost it.  I've lost my faith in humanity.  Wednesday evening after Farmer's Market, I came home and was unloading my car in the driveway like I normally do.  I was home alone and heard someone pull up by our adjacent driveway and then I heard the pop of a 22 caliber rifle, with laughing following that.  It's not uncommon around here, unfortunately, for people to drive around and shoot gophers from vehicles on county roads.  Never mind that it's not legal.  In my head I was thinking they were shooting at my wandering chickens.  They are often in the road.  I immediately ran to the road to look and see what was going on.  We have a huge windbreak of trees around the house, so it's impossible to see anything with them all leaved out.  As I approached the road, a green pickup drove past and the passenger looked right at me, still laughing and smiling.  I yelled at them and they sped off, yelling something back.  I tried to get a plate number, but they took off too fast.  I decided not to call the Sheriff's Dept. for various reasons, the biggest being they never can catch the idiots out here anyway.  There's too many roads to take to disappear.

I looked for dead chickens and saw none, but got a sick feeling that I'd better check on the pigs.  They all seemed to be ok, but Friday morning when I did my chores, one was dead.  I am just sick about it.  I called the Sheriff's Dept. and a deputy came out.  I had to lift the dead pig over the fence and hose it off to look for any possible wounds.  I found what I believe to be an entrance and an exit wound, but without taking the pig to a vet for a cause of death, at my expense, they cannot make a judgement as to if that's what killed it.  What killed the pig was an infection that set in after it was shot.  Her right front shoulder was considerably swollen and the bullet hit there and came out under her chin.  He took pictures, but a lot of good that will do.  We will get no restitution without the vet C.O.D.

I do believe I know who did it.  I recognized the man.  Yes, a grown man.  One I went to school with.  They can charge him with criminal endangerment and they will get their money, but we are the victims here and get nothing.

I am so sorry this happened to you! What is even scarier is what if you or someone in your family had been out with the animals?!? We should feel safe in our own homes!

I had a similar experience with our neighbor 7 years ago. It was late morning, hubby was working and I was home alone with my extremely ill 6 month old and our 3 year old, I had my 3 year old in the bath tub, I heard a shot extremely close. I looked out my back door just in time to see our adult neighbor wearing shorts and t-shirt (in December), running along the back of my woods carrying a rifle! I immediately called my hubby home. Joseph raced home and we found my mothers' cat dead right beside my daughter's bedroom window! He was standing in my front yard and shot TOWARD my daughter's window all, to kill my mothers cat. A cat that was so tame, it let my daughter do anything to it. My parents live just through the valley and the cat would come visit her. We called the police and reported him, you know how that goes...the only thing we could do was get a restraining order!
thank goodness he moved 2 years ago!

My heart goes out to you! Take comfort in knowing that he will have to explain it on judgement day.
God bless you!

I am so sorry to hear about this happening to you and one of your pigs!!! I would ask to go to court if I were you and be repaid for the price of the pig I guess. I can't imagine how else you would get anything out of this!!

Boys are stupid, and I knwo they play these stupid games as teenagers, not knowing the consequences of their actions and not thinking ahead of time, but you say you recognized this guy as an adult you went to school with!! That is shameful!!!

God's Blessings,
Amy Jo

for all you have had to go through with grown men acting like idiots! Even kids should know better than to shoot at farm animals let alone a grown man!!!! Nothing funny about killing animals or abusing other's property, shame on them. Someday they will have to answer for what they did but I know that doesn't help with your loss right now. For which I am truly sorry.

God Bless, Sher

You should be thankful that you didn't get shot!! You never know what "nuts" like that will do. I would have run to check what was going on also, not thinking of the danger.
I am sorry for your loss. Don't give up on humankind. There are many more caring souls than the trash you ran into.

Hi LaVonne,
I was so upset when I read about what happened to your pig. How terrable. I don't understand how anybody could do such a thing, so cruel. I can see why you are so upset, it would affect me the same way. You take care.
