• Thursday, August 7, 2008 - My Farmer's Market Table

This is my little table at Farmer's Market.  I am only selling my excess garden produce, but I have been pleased.  I had 3 little artichokes for sale and that tickled me.  I sold all 3.  It's amazing to me that we can grow them here!

From the left (you can't see my basket of yarn from my sheep) on the table, my friend Sarah's soap.  Farm eggs, russian sage & chives in back of the eggs, zucchini, patty pan squash and artichokes in the basket behind the eggs, Walla Walla Sweet onions in front, fennel, beets and in the back kale, collards and lettuce.  I also had sweet basil.  There's more in the coolers, but I only put out enough to show in the 90 degree temps.

How cute! Very nice spread. Our town is starting a Farmers Market this year. I don't think we'd have any extra produce to sell (our produce is more valuable in our eyes then any price I think!) but we've considered doing rustic crafts or furniture, wood plaques, homemade soap, knitting, quilted/appliquéd wall hangings etc. Did you happen to see anyone else selling similar things at a Farmers Market? I mean, is that even legal?? LOL! :0)

Beautiful! There is nothing better than a table of farm fresh goods. There is a HUGE farmer's market that we hope to participate in when our organic berries/garlic/garden produce are in abundance next year. It's about an hour away, but would be worth it. Thanks for sharing!

Check with the market coordinator in your area. Your local health dept. pretty much dictates what can and can't be sold. Lots of rules and regs to follow, but there's lots of handmade items. Most of the control lies in the food items.

Very nice picture. The display is so important and many vendors don't pay attention to that. We are vendors also and love to get ideas from others.
My question is how do you display basil and or other herbs? And how do you sell it, ie by the bunch? What price?
We have a small herb garden, but I do not know how to keep it fresh to sell or the other questions?
Thanks, Marilyn

I bag up the basil in 4 oz. packages and only display 1 bag at a time. The sage and chives I put a rubberband around and put them in a small crock with cold water. I always have a spray water bottle along to spritz everything, including myself!
As for prices, ask around or check the local stores. Go with what the other vendors are charging to keep it in the ballpark.
