• Saturday, August 5, 2006 - Gearing up for Fall and dealing with unexpected crisises

Well, this week has been a great "learning challenge" as my friends and family would say.
First: a sudden allergic reaction to an unknown substance, which landed me in the emergency room, after 2 days of home treatment just didn't do a thing. I tried everything: eliminating all possible suspects, making sure nothing perfumed was touching me, etc. In the end, the worsening hives and shortness of breath (two symptoms I'd NEVER had) were enough to get me to seek help. I simply felt that I wasn't going to be able to breathe otherwise.
Next day, groggy and itchy, I went ahead and had a root canal. Got through that fine, considering. Then, opened the mail and found the bank system had made a HUGE error, which luckily, they corrected quickly, realizing it was their error.  But I discovered the error after bank hours and I confess I didn't sleep well that night. The next day? A large tree from a neighbor's yard falls across our yard,  narrowly misses our house and then a friend calls, in need of help after breaking her leg and...all of a sudden, the week's schedule goes awry.
Sleep deprived, itchy but grateful to be here. If anyone reads this, I'd love advice on getting through these kinds of things. Prayer, of course, is a bedrock for me as well as taking things one step at a time and trying not to fret over the future. But I think I need to strengthen my coping skills.

(((HUGS))) I really don't have a lot of advice, just thought you needed a hug today! One thing I *try* to do is to look at the silver lining. For instance, the tree fell, but missed your house and family. That sort of thing. Praying for you!

Well I'm sorry to hear that you have had to endure so much! I'm thankful that you went on to the doctor about your allergic reaction! That's scary! You've been through times that we all dread. Seems like when it rains it pours doesn't it? God is THE ONE to turn to in times like these. Family is also a blessing. I said a prayer for you!

You know Sugar, you must be doing something right. If you were totally off track the old devil would just leave you alone and never stir things up! Hang in there, trust in God and He will see you through. I always told my children, " Joy is not the absence of suffering and trials, it is the presence of the LORD.

Prayer is great and also scripture memorization! "Hiding God's word in your heart" I hope you are having a better week.

I got this email-passed it on
recently made a batch of pancakes for my healthy 14-year-old son,
using a mix that was in our pantry.
He said that they tasted "funny," but ate them anyway.
About 10 minutes later, he began having difficulty breathing and his
lips began turning purple. I gave him his allergy pill, had him sit on
the sofa and told him to relax. He was wheezing while inhaling and
exhaling.
My husband, a volunteer Firefighter and EMT, heated up some water, and
we had my son lean over the water so the steam could clear his chest and
sinuses. Soon, his breathing became more regular and his lips returned
to a more normal color.
We checked the date on the box of pancake mix and, to my dismay, found
it was very outdated. As a reference librarian at an academic
institution, I have the ability to search through many research
databases. I did just that, and found an article the next day that
mentioned a 19-year-old male DYING after eating pancakes made with
outdated mix. Apparently, the mold that forms in old pancake mix can be toxic!
When we told our friends about my son's close call, we were surprised at
the number of people who mentioned that they should check their own
pancake mix since they don't use it often, or they had purchased it some
time ago.
With so many people shopping at warehouse-type stores and buying large
sizes of pancake mix, I hope your readers will take the time to check
the expiration date on their boxes.
Also, beware of outdated cake, brownie and cookie mixes.
This is TRUE--Check it out!

That is very frightening. I think when so many things happen at once we go into a state of emergency mode and the adrenaline keeps us from relaxing or sleeping. Just keep turning over your cares to Christ who cares...

Since you are on my friends list and I have so few I've tagged you, but don't' feel like you have to do it. Stop by and comment though if you would.

About Me

I am a mom of 3 and we are trying to live a simpler, gentler life and to leave a soft footprint on the earth, as far as not harming the environment and not spending money needlessly. I hope you stop by my store sometime to see what I sell as many books relate to homesteading, homeschooling, children's reading and math, etc. Others are just great older books which are often rare or out of print: rareanduniquebooksonline.com
