Baking Day in the Homestead Kitchen

06:30, 2008-Apr-18 .. 19 comments .. Link

Well yesterday afternoon was another weekly baking day here on my homestead. We were out of bread and all baked goods for that matter.   So yesterday I (with a little help) made 6 loaves whole wheat bread, a pan of garlic cheese dinner rolls to go with our Navy Bean Soup that was for dinner, 2 loaves of cinnamon bread and 1 pan of cinnamon chocolate rolls.

Here is how it went:

I started the morning off by grinding about 20 some cups of wheat:
-

Then in the afternoon Leanne started the baking day by making the 6 loaves of bread:

Then I made garlic cheese dinner rolls. I served navy bean soup for dinner. Whenever I have a big baking day I usually try and make dinner something in the crockpot or a pot of something that can be made earlier in the day so dinner preps and bread making don't end up needing to be done at the same time and resulting in a lot of kitchen chaos  . I don’t typically get to baking bread until the afternoon so I do most of my main dinner preps beforehand.

When the rolls were done I went on to make cinnamon bread. I did this by doubling my 2 loaf recipe for whole wheat bread. I divided the dough into 4 pieces. With 2 of them I put them in bread pans and let them rise and bake.

While they were rising and baking I took the other 2 pieces of dough and rolled out each one. To make my chocolate rolls I melted ¼ cup butter and added 2 teaspoons of cocoa powder and ½ cup brown sugar (I was out of Sucanat or I would have used that instead). I mixed this together and poured it out on my rolled out piece of dough. I spread it around and then sprinkled about a ½ cup of chocolate chips on the dough. I then rolled the dough up and cut it into slices just like I would for cinnamon rolls. I repeated this same process with the 2nd piece of dough. This filled up a large jelly roll pan. I baked them for 25 minutes.

Your baked goods could be in a bakery window, easy! Thanks for the recipe links. I'm wondering how to substitute regular sugar in the recipes.

Wow, does all that look good. Your house must smell so amazing on baking day. Thanks for sharing such awsome pics and recipes. I love making your bread products (although scaled down to 1 or 2 loaves LOL) and trying your recipes.

sounds like a busy day

I love your 2 loaf bread recipe. For our family of four, I have to bake around once a week, give or take a few days. I've been baking them for a few months now. Could you post how you make your cinnamon bread? I think that would be a real treat.

yummo!

How do you keep the bread fresh? We do usually one loaf a week (just the two of us) and it tends to go hard on us.

You amaze me! Your baking days make me want one of my own!
Could you possibly do a topic on your Bosch mixer? Do you ever
freeze your loaves of bread? How do they come out of the freezer? Keep up the good work!

I bet your husband thinks your price is far above rubies
I would also love to know more about your bosch mixer I am looking for a mixer but cannot find the one you use in Australia, only one similar but it is built into the bench. Do you know anything about the built in ones

Hi Mrs. Miller!
You are great at making tutorials. My husband gave me your breadmaking cd for Christmas. I printed it off and it's great!

What kind of flour

07:47, 2008-Apr-21 .. Posted by makalea
Crystal, I would really like to know what wheat you are grinding for flour. I use your 2 loaf recipe and buy my wheat and grind it. I am buying from Azure Standard their organic hard white wheat. I am just not getting as good of results as your are - although most of the time others consider it great bread. Your reply would be kindly appreciated. April

Wow

All those breads and rolls look delicious and perfect!!! Great job! I have made bread with just wheat flour from the store and it comes out rather dense. Maybe one day I'll figure out the secret, huh? LOL ;) Keep up the good work!

I loved reading your blog today :)

You are amazing! Your meals look delicious but are so simple! I am trying my hand at menu planning (finding it saves so much money) and think I'll just copy yours. :O)

We are looking at wheat grinders. Can you tell about yours and why you chose that one over some of the others out there? We are considering one that can be used with or without power.

What a great post. I tried your recipes for bread and Italian Pinto Beans. Both were a hit! Yours is the first whole wheat bread recipe that I actually like the taste of. Thank you so much for a wonderful blog!
