Got some new yarn
Posted in knitting
|
Today the kids and I went to the Crafty Lady store - I've never been there before, but I can definitely see it becoming my favorite yarn store. I've never seen so much sock yarn in one store before!!!!!!
The actual reason for going to that store today was because I had ordered in some yarn and it finally got here
We checked it out when we got home and it really does glow, it's soooooooo neat. I have one project planned out for this yarn and then with what is left over I'm thinking of knitting some stars for our Christmas tree, I think it will look really neat at night to see glowing stars on the tree.
I also picked up some more yarn to make those furry mittens - this will be the third pair that I will have made and I'm not sure how many more I'll be able to do. The very helpful lady at the Crafty Lady told me that they are no longer making the fun fur type yarn, she said that when they first came out with that yarn people went to town making scarves and never thought of making anything else with it (I'm sure that some creative people made other items with it but not many) so it is being discontinued. This happened with the Sean Sheep Armytage yarn that I was getting from Wal-Mart, it was a wonderful 100% wool that felted up just beautifully ... for the low, low price of $2.97 a ball - and now they don't carry it anymore (at least in the Wal-Marts that I have checked out). They had some fun fur yarn in their sale bin ($2/ball) so I stocked up on some of it - this will probably make it so that people stop ordering these mittens, lol, that's what happened with the little felted purses that I was making ... when I made an extra one to have on hand, people stopped ordering them, lol.

The wonders of knitting

I love how knitting can provide many things in life that make our lives a little bit more comfortable and dare I say less frustrated? - that comment may have just gotten you scratching your head and saying "Pardon????".
If you really think about it, you'll see what I'm saying - many of us have a stash of yarn, now I'm not saying all of us do ... there are a few of you out there that don't knit or crochet. However, for those of us that do these handcrafts we will find any excuse to use up that stash (mainly so we can go out and buy more yarn, lol). When it is cold outside, one of the nicest things is being cuddled up on the couch wrapped in a handknit or crocheted blanket - am I right????? Our feet get cold, so what do we make??? Right, socks or slippers (they are sooooo much nicer to wear than the store bought variety ). Mittens, toques, scarves and sweaters are all necessities to make it through our cold winters.
However, some of the things that we make are just down right fun and some people would just roll their eyes at these products from out needles and hooks. One example that comes to mind is those half socks that are toe-less (you know the ones, they come about halfway up your foot and are open toed so that you can get a pedicure and wear your flip flops while keeping your feet somewhat warm. I personally find these little socks absolutely adorable - Don on the other hand simply shakes his head, as long as he doesn't have to wear them he is fine with me making them.
I think I may have just added another item to the "roll the eyes" and "head shaking" category. Last month I bought myself a new set of headphones - I wanted to try out the kind that goes inside your ears but they had to be on the small side, otherwise they hurt my ears. So, with the help of my kids and a couple of my friends children (yes, I took some teenagers and preteens with me, lol) I am now the proud owner of a new set of earphones. The only downside to these earphones is that the cord kept getting all tangled up. So, here is my solution:
This cozy is great, when I'm not using the earphones I simply pull down on the single cord and it pulls the earphones down into the tube so they don't get tangled anymore. I chose a bright variegated yarn so I would be able to spot them easily when they are in my bag - it's the perfect solution, don't you think so?

Latest Knitting Project

Last month I had seen a picture for a pair of furry felted mittens - other than the fact that they were blue and reminded me of Cookie Monster's hand, I really liked them. I also wasn't willing to pay for the pattern so I needed to come up with an alternative if I wanted to make a pair of them.
The pattern that I used for my little experiment was this one by Spinderella's Creations. I took one strand of fun fur yarn and one strand of 100% wool (not superwash wool because that won't felt) and I knit them together following the pattern. This was the result:

The original pattern was knit flat and seamed together, I prefer to knit mittens in the round so the pattern I used worked beautifully for that. These were only run through the wash once and could easily be felted some more - I can still see the stitches in the wool, but they did get much thicker when they were washed so I'll see how they are when the white stuff starts arriving and it gets a lot cooler outside.

Iced Coffee Syrup

***IMPORTANT***: you need a percolator style coffee pot to make this.
DO NOT use a drip style coffee maker to make this syrup!!!!!
* Make one pot of coffee, then discard the grounds.
* Add fresh grounds, percolate again, with the coffee as liquid, not fresh water.
* Do this three times.
* To the finished coffee mixture, add one half the amount of sugar (if you end up with 3 cups coffee mixture, add 1 1/2 cups sugar).
* Mix until sugar is completely dissolved.
* To use: add 2 - 3 tablespoons of syrup to a 10 oz glass of milk, stir to mix and enjoy.
