Making Your Own Cookbook Posted in Daily Musings
Making our own family cookbook has been something that I have always wanted to do - it seems like such a neat idea that all of your family favorites are in one, easily accessible, spot.
A year or so ago I started on this venture, when I first started I would type the recipes into a word file on our old 386 computer, then print them out using one of those dot matrix computers, lol. This process worked but was incredibly slow - I was doing them up on that computer so that they would all have the same font and everything. Well, when we upgraded our computer to a Mac it didn't have the same fonts - so I put the cookbook on hold until I could find something that I liked.
Cindy Rushton has some wonderful pages in her ebooks, one that I have used over and over is the recipe page. This works wonderfully, I print one off and then I can photocopy as many as I need - and as an added bonus the kids see me actually using this as a time to work on my penmanship (leading by example, right, lol).
I thought that you might like to actually see what I have done so I took some pictures. The binder that I am using is a hard plastic one - very sturdy, especially if it accidentally gets dropped. I put in the plastic page protectors and once I have the recipe copied out I put it in the appropriate section. Another item that I added to the front and back of my recipe binder (but you can't see them in the pictures) is those plastic things that push the pages back onto the rings of the binder (not sure what they are actually called) so you don't end up with curled or ripped pages:
 The Category (or Title) pages were done up on our old computer - you could do this much fancier than what mine is or you could just use construction paper and decorate it up however you see fit. That's the beauty of doing up your own cookbook, you can do exactly what you want to do in it.
 I'm really not sure why some of my pictures are not turning when I download them - anyway, the narrow rectangle at what would be the top of the page is for the name of the recipe, underneath that is lines to put the list of ingredients. The big blank square (this would be the lower left hand corner if it was up and down) is where you write what you are supposed to do to make the recipe. On the right hand side of the page are 3 boxes one is to list what you would serve this with, one is for other things you can do with the recipe (on my flavored milk syrup recipe I noted that you can add it to carbonated water for a fruit flavored soda) and another box is to put where you originally found the recipe (or your story behind the recipe).
 I really like using the page protectors to hold the recipe pages - this way when I have the recipe book open and I am mixing something up, if it happens to splash out of the mixing bowl I don't have to worry about it wrecking the actual recipe pages.

Wonderful post!!! I had the same idea a few years ago and I now have a HUGE binder with recipes I have snatched from friends, the internet, magazines, etc. I also got a beautiful journal and have decided to hand write the family favorites in it. This way, someday, someone will have the family recipes and hopefully it will mean as much to them, and my own mother's handwritten recipe card file means to me.

Iced Coffee Syrup

***IMPORTANT***: you need a percolator style coffee pot to make this.
DO NOT use a drip style coffee maker to make this syrup!!!!!
* Make one pot of coffee, then discard the grounds.
* Add fresh grounds, percolate again, with the coffee as liquid, not fresh water.
* Do this three times.
* To the finished coffee mixture, add one half the amount of sugar (if you end up with 3 cups coffee mixture, add 1 1/2 cups sugar).
* Mix until sugar is completely dissolved.
* To use: add 2 - 3 tablespoons of syrup to a 10 oz glass of milk, stir to mix and enjoy.
