Using the Crockpot

Posted in Daily Musings

For the past few months I have been making yogurt in my Crockpot, I love the simplicity of doing it this way ... I add the milk to the crock, turn it on low and set a timer so I know when to come back for the next step, shut the crock off and set the timer again so I know when to add the starter.  After the starter is added I cover the Crockpot with a couple of thick towels and let it sit for about 6 to 8 hours.  I then pour it into a container and keep it in the fridge.  I can't remember where I got the recipe from, it was off of someone's blog ... if I find the blog, I'll post it so you can find this wonderful recipe.

The thing I like best about the homemade yogurt is that I always have some on hand - that doesn't always happen with store-bought yogurt, and I can add whatever I feel like adding (I know, you can do that with store-bought plain yogurt ... but I don't keep that kind of yogurt in the house).  One of my favorite ways to have my yogurt is to add homemade Iced Java (the coffee flavored syrup you add to milk) to it - I found a recipe a year or so ago to make homemade Iced Java and it is delicious, and with so many different flavors of coffee out now the flavors for my Iced Java is pretty much endless.

My Mom had told me about coffee flavored yogurt that she had bought once and how much she enjoyed it - this of course got me thinking that I could just add the syrup to the yogurt and it would be the same, I tried it and it worked ... Don and the kids aren't really fans of it, but that just means there's more for me to enjoy, lol.  Another way I have tried flavoring yogurt is to add some lemon extract and a little bit of sugar, this was pretty tasty (using vanilla extract and a bit of sugar is really good, too).  Of course there is always the old stand by of putting in a spoonful of jam and stirring it up really well - I did this once with Raspberry/Apple Jam, Charlotte thought it was really neat that I was eating pink yogurt, lol, she tried it and thought it was not to bad .... but prefers the flavored store bought ones.

Iced Coffee Syrup

≈ coffee
≈ water
≈ sugar

***IMPORTANT***: you need a percolator style coffee pot to make this.
DO NOT use a drip style coffee maker to make this syrup!!!!!

* Make one pot of coffee, then discard the grounds.
* Add fresh grounds, percolate again, with the coffee as liquid, not fresh water.
* Do this three times.
* To the finished coffee mixture, add one half the amount of sugar (if you end up with 3 cups coffee mixture, add 1 1/2 cups sugar).
* Mix until sugar is completely dissolved.

* To use: add 2 - 3 tablespoons of syrup to a 10 oz glass of milk, stir to mix and enjoy.
