Scriptural Gems

Posted in Inspirational

Last night we had another thunder storm, we have been having them in the evenings for about the last week (give or take a day or two).  As soon as the thunder started I began to wonder how long it would take Charlotte to come out and sleep on one of the couches in the livingroom - didn't take very long (she doesn't like sleeping in her room when it is storming outside, so she sleeps in the livingroom just outside our bedroom so she is closer to us).

When the kids were younger I showed them a verse in their Bibles that has helped me immensely when I am feeling afraid (and it has really helped them as well):

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. (Is. 41:10)

This was the first verse that I had them memorize - they both put bookmarks at this spot in their Bibles so that they could find it easily.

So, while I was laying in bed last night I pulled my Bible off of the headboard and opened it up to Is. 41:10.  Then a thought occurred to me, I had memorized that verse but what did it say before and after it - I began to read and my eyes stopped on this verse and just read it over and over and over:

For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. (Is. 41:13)

I really love when God speaks to you, don't you?  I looked over at Don and shared the verse with him and said "Isn't that just the most amazing thing?  When we are afraid, God is right there beside us, holding our hand!"  Now, I have been told over and over that God is always with us and that he won't leave us ...... but you know what, when you actually read the words from His Word it kind of takes on a whole new meaning, know what I mean?

The Five Finger Prayer

Posted in Inspirational

I found this in amongst a pile of papers that I needed to go through, it had been ripped out of a magazine.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do:

The Five Finger Prayer

  1. Your thumb is the nearest you.  Begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you.  They are the easiest to remember.
  2. The next finger is the pointing finger.  Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal.  This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers.
  3. The next finger is the tallest finger.  It reminds us of our leaders.  Pray for the Prime Minister, leaders in business and industry, and administrators.
  4. The fourth finger is our ring finger.  Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger; as any piano teacher will testify.  It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain.
  5. And lastly comes our little finger, the smallest finger of all which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others.  Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself.  By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.

Wednesday's find of the day

Posted in Daily Musings

Have I ever mentioned how much I enjoy going to Second Hand stores?  I really do like it, sure there are some times that you don't find anything.  But there are other days when you find a whole bunch of things that you positively can not live without.

Today's find is a real gem - it's a book (that normally costs way more than what I paid).  This is the book that I found - this book covers embroidery, quilting, rug-making, needlepoint, patchwork, lacework, knitting, macrame, applique, crochet.  I mainly got this book because of the section on tatting, I had borrowed a friends book and really liked the tatting section .... soooooooo, when I found this one I had to buy it.  Oh, and the price was only 25¢!!!!!!!!!

But that's not all I found while at the Second Hand store today - the lady that was working asked why my kids weren't in school, I politely replied that we homeschool and that we have already finished our school year.  When she heard that we homeschool she asked if I knew of anyone that could use a Hooked On Phonics program - it has a whole bunch of cassette tapes as well as video (I only quickly peeked in the box).  I told her that I might know someone who would be interested in it, quickly phoned Lori and told Paul (her husband) about it because she wasn't at home.  He told me to pick it up and if they couldn't use it it could be put in the Resource Library.  So I bought it for a whopping $10 - I think it was a pretty profitable day today, lol.
