She's coming...

My mom is coming to visit.  Haven't actually seen her since 1998.  Yeah, that kind of relationship. But, she's not in the best of health and wants to see the kids.  She'll be staying with us.  I've been planning dozens of activities so that we don't actually have to have extended conversations.  No big things, just little trips to local landmarks, restaurants, shops, etc. Dread is a strong word, but I can't think of another to describe how I'm feeling. Any advice on how to handle the visit? I think it'll be about a week (she hasn't actually told me how long she's staying...I think so she can either extend or curtail the visit at her desire). Anyway, here's a picture of Love in a Mist amidst a plethora of nasturtium leaves.  I like the contrast of colors.  I wish I was little enough to hide in there amongst the leaves.

I've read your beautiful blog many times, but felt compelled to write today because I think I might have a similar relationship with my mother. I often found that I would be angry or hurt after spending time with her. It has been very painful for me, but I have had to decrease the amount of time I spend with her and just "love her from afar." I don't have any silver bullet advice to offer you, except some advice I've heard about loving difficult people: try to see them as the Lord sees them.

Blessings to you,

April

Lizzie,

I have no suggestions on the visit, but I have the recipe you asked for! (:
I am actually making this up as we go because this is actually something that I throw together.

Cook about 1lbs of your favorite pasta shape. I usually use medium shells. After cooked, I drain and rinse in cold water, then put into your favorite large bowl. Then I add two can of solid white tuna. I break the tuna up a bit. Then I add chives from the garden. (Onions work too.) I also add some fresh tomatoes. (But not always.) Add some frozen peas. Then add about a cup or more of mayo. Mix and chill.
I sometimes add black olives, cucumbers, peppers and even everything that I have mentioned. I mix it up or change it to what ever I may have in the house. It is nice to have as a light meal during the heat.

Good luck with your visit and keep your chin up!

Jennifer

First...I love those flowers. You mentioned them before so I went in search of seeds but found none. Are they only good for your area do you think? Maybe I'll have to search the net for some.

Mother/daughter relationships can sure be tough sometimes. My parents live on the property with us and it can get.....a.....little.....tense....sometimes. My parents are of an era where they have a lot of negative opinions about things...oh heck...most things. So I sigh (trying very hard to NOT roll my eyes like a child:-) and bite my tongue. I'll be darned if my tongue is not permanently pierced!

I don't know your situation but I'll be praying for you!
Hugs,
J

You’re St. Melito of Sardis!

You have a great love of history and liturgy. You’re attached to the traditions of the ancients, yet you recognize that the old world — great as it was — is passing away. You are loyal to the customs of your family, though you do not hesitate to call family members to account for their sins.

Find out which Church Father you are at The Way of the Fathers!
