Grocery Budgets

11:36, 2006-Feb-15 .. 5 comments .. Link
I am still unsuccesfully looking for information on food budgets for families.  I am having a hard time getting my grocery spending under 600 dollars a month and I am appalled at the high price we are paying for food.  That does include occasional herbal tinctures that I buy as well as diapers, household cleaners and the like.  We do mostly buy organic milk and lots of fruits and veggies but I try to buy in season or on sale and I buy very few snacks, mixes, or anything packaged.   I would love to hear others ideas and budgets, or get insight on other web sites that have advice for lowering food bills.

Budget? What's that??

My children and I sat down and figured out how much we spend a year on food. It's staggering.
We are a family of 5, and we eat mostly home cooked meals. NO frozen dinners / NO box type dinners.......I buy a lot of fresh produce.
We spend from 600-800.00 a month. (( and we RARELY eat out)) I would LOVE to cut this number in 1/2!! I am looking forward to the other replys!

Groceries

We also spend entirely too much on groceries. The only suggestion I can make is that we have been trying to buy more and more bulk items.
Good Luck:)

I just saw this post and thought I would share.. I have a website http://www.thefamilyhomestead.com/ and I have lots of grocery budget helps on there. Here is one article I have called Tackling the Grocery Budget: http://www.thefamilyhomestead.com/tacklegrocerybudget.htm and another one with help in how to figure out what you pay for things: http://www.thefamilyhomestead.com/menunumbers.htm

Plus I have budget menus and recipes on the site too.

Blessings, Crystal :)

I try very hard to be frugal, but it is not always easy. I found this site and it has some great ideas. You will have to pick through the ones you would never use (I had a lot recipes on there that would never work for my family). The Chocolate frosty recipe is very good. The $45 per week menu is especially interesting. Not a lot I could use, but still interesting.

grocery budget for a family of 6

10:30, 2006-Feb-27 .. Posted by hippiechickmom
We are a family of 6 and we eat 3 meals a day here at the house. I save by using coupons, using and eating lots of leftovers and not buying anything boxed.
I really really try to buy organic as much as possible (we have a great organic grocery close by)...but it's sooo expensive! I do buy only organic milk, meat and fruit. I just have to reconcile this with hoping/knowing that I am doing better by my children in buying the organic. My favorite site for recipes is: www.cooks.com -- I find easy recipes and use what I have to "make do" in a pinch. I would say we spend about $600-$800 a month also...but this also includes toiletries, herbs, cleaners, etc....basically everything! Now that spring is upon us, we'll be planting a garden in the backyard!!! We live in the south....so we love all that okra, squash and zucchini!!!
