Homesteading: A Woman's Journey

Blessings of no TV

Not having a TV has become a blessing.  The TV is still here, but the electric circuit it is on was one of the ones that was lost when the fuse box quit working properly.  I have often teased my Beloved that we needed to get rid of the TV.  He loved watching it though and our daughter was quickly growing to be just as eager to watch.

This past week without a TV however has brought changes in attitudes.  Beloved has come to realize that he only misses watching TV if he gets bored.  Especially first thing in the morning when he is having breakfast before going to work.  Friday's have been our "Pizza & a movie" night.  Starting tonight, we will instead have pizza and a game/activity night.

Abbie stopped asking to watch her Disney & Veggie Tales DVDs after the 4th day.  Since then, she has contented herself with coloring in her coloring book or "reading" her little books.   Often, she "reads" to Micah.  She is also playing with him more and doesn't miss the TV at all.

With Abbie being 2 yrs old and Micah 5 months old, they are young enough that they won't really miss the TV.  It will be much easier than with an older child who has grown up with one.  The lack of TV will also promote the idea of playing outdoors instead of sitting in front of a box all morning or afternoon.

I see this as a good thing for our family.  Yes, there were shows that I enjoyed also, but I haven't even given the shows any thought.  I now have time to read or do other activities that I may not have worked on if the TV was playing.  News can be read online.  We check the weather and other important information daily on the internet.

We are giving ourselves until after next payday to decide if we are going to stay without the extra electricity, only replacing the circuit box for the areas that are essential, such as the refrigerator & major appliances.  If we decide to continue as we are planning, we will be taking all of our DVD collection to Ebay to sell.  We will also be having a large electronics yard sale to sell off all the no longer needed electrical items.

As of now, it looks as though we are going to go ahead with our plans.  There is so many blessings attached to not having the TV and the other unessential electrical things.  We are gaining the opportunity to do more as a family.  The childrens' minds will be opened to the idea of finding their entertainment in play or reading instead of vegetating in front of a TV.

What a great post. We get into the habit of doing things don't we. You sound like you are gaining a lot of gleanings from the fact that there's no tv to watch.

What an eye-opening post! Thanks for sharing how your family has enjoyed he no tv period!!! I think you are right in that we watch tv when bored, or just out of habit. Plus, as I think of it, are there really any wholesome shows that we watch??? Touched by an Angel reruns in the mornings, maybe Little House on the Prairie, but what else???

I have been bringing up the idea of no tv and no computer nights here at home. We used to love playing card and board games when we were first married. You see, we lived in a small apartment, and didn't have a washer and dryer, so we would play games while waiting on our laundry at the local laundromat. Of course this was before kids too, but we enjoyed it so much that we have decided we need to get out the cards and games after the little one's bedtime! Who knows, maybe the non tv and computer nights will become more and more as we go along.

God's Blessings,
Amy Jo

No TV

When we first moved in here, two years ago, our goats decided that TV wasn't good for us. They chewed off the antenna cable on the outside of the house. We never replaced it and have been TV free for two years now. My mom thinks it's a shame. I think it's wonderful. Even my teenagers are used to it and don't mind. We still watch DVDs and VHS, but more as a family, and only things we can watch as a family. Makes movie night more special.

Great post Paula. I called last Tuesday to have them shut cable off and they still haven't done it. I can't wait for them to do it. You are right, with little Abbie and Micah you are starting them down the right road -no TV. I have a three year old granddaughter and unfortunately it seems like that has become the "babysitter". I wish I had never had a TV when my kids were little although when my kids were younger they did spend a lot of time outdoors, it was they got older that they got glued to the thing. I find when I don't have TV I do so much more.

Last year when I moved into this house I put the TV up in my daughter's room. My ex-husband insisted on buying me a flat screen TV for the livingroom. That was the beginning of the end - until now. I will use it for just what I said I wanted in the beginning - to watch DVD's with and that's it and I not as likely to just snap it on and put in a DVD. It's way too easy to just turn it on and then get "glued" to it.
