Mothers Who Know

Homeschool Blogger

I just realized last night that there was a homeschool blogger site. So I took a few moments to set up an account over there as well. It is called Liberty Academy, but the actual address at homeschool blogger is title of liberty.

It only has two entries so far, and I am not sure how I am going to keep up with both blogs - but I thought it would be nice to have a site just dedicated to how we run our homeschool, what our goals are, and why we homeschool.

Elementary Co-op

Today is Thursday - which means its Co-op day! We are members of a co-op that has about 30 families in it. We meet every Thursday for 3 hours. We have three semesters. Everyone teaches for one semester, assists in administrative posts (sign in, principal, teachers asst, etc) for one semester, and has one semester off.

They offer crafts classes, academic classes, gym, and foriegn language. Some of the classes the kids are in right now are Pioneer life, Electricity, Spanish, Altered books (I will post on this one later - it is absolutely the best creative idea I have ever seen!!), and crafts. Next semester they will be taking Science expirements, American girl history, card making, and scrapbooking.

The women that run it are absolutely amazing. We actually meet in a Baptist church cellar and thier educational builiding next door. That is where we have homeschool support group meetings as well. They are women of faith, and it shows. It is so nice that the kids get to go to co-op. It provides some wiggle room in our homeschooling. Last year, I was pregnant until Nov, and then I had a newborn, so I had the kids take a lot of academic type classes. This year, we have the academics down, and so I am using the co-op to fill in the arts-craftsy side of homeschooling.\

This year they are putting on a Christmas play. This will give them the opportunity to memorize lines, and be in a class play. We are also going caroling at a nursing home,  as well as several field trips. We also have socials for both the adults and the children.

I was nervous at first about the differing religions, but the co-op has worked out great. There are baptist, catholic, evangelical, mormon (just me), and a few others. We all sign a statement that we understand that the co-op will be run under a set of beliefs, but we dont have to have those beliefs ourselves. We just dont sign up for any of the religion based classes.  It really is a wonderful group that we have. I have made so many new friends in the past year and  a half. It has been a wonderful blessing.
