Table Project

12:42 PM, Friday, November 21, 2008 .. Posted in On the Farm .. 1 comments .. Link
When we moved to our current home, we bought a dining room set second hand.  It was very solid, and well built, but needed refinishing.  The table had several marks and scratches on the top, and had been chewed on by a dog on the bottom.

So I decided to get started...thankfully we have a double door to the back porch and were able to move the table outside to sand....

JR helping sand...  JD helped as well, but I didn't have the camera handy when he did...

Almost done sanding...

And here it is.....it is still wet, but it is looking so much better!  You can see it "stretched" and one of the leaves sitting in it.  I still have to do the other leaf and the benches and chairs, but those will have to wait until spring.  It is too cold to work outside anymore, and the stain doesn't like to dry well when it is cold.  We are pleased with the results.

Hunting, hunting

07:08 PM, Tuesday, November 11, 2008 .. 0 comments .. Link
You want to know why they call the act "hunting" and not "shooting"?  Because you wait and wait and wait.  Of course, in my instance I should probably call the pass-time the waiting and shivering game.

Yesterday morning I was out in the hunting blind when I heard a huge commotion off behind me.  About 20-30 seconds later, a little doe came hauling tail from behind me and stopped directly in front of my blind.  I sighted in on her, but really, she was kind of small, and while I contemplated the meat quantity vs. work required, she bolted through the fence and off into the woods.  Well that was settled!

So I sat and sat, and about an hour later, I was getting restless.  I had already been in the blind for a few hours, and was about to call it quits for the day.  I wiped my nose with a tissue, I adjusted the tall stool that sits in front of me as a support, I used my "doe bleat" just for the heck of it, then I stuck my rifle out the window of the blind and used the scope like a binocular to look down the hill into the woods.  I sat up and was startled to see a doe standing right there in front of me! After all that noise I had made! LOL She was a keeper too, good size.    So I sat there waiting for her to get into a position where I could take a shot, and finally she turned, and I shot.  And completely missed!!!  I was shocked!  How on earth could I have missed her when she was only about 30 yards away, and I had taken my time.  She should have dropped in her tracks like the last deer I got.  So I climbed out of the blind to look for signs that I may have hit her, meanwhile my oldest two are hollering out of the house, "WHAT DID YOU SHOOT!?!?!?!?!"  Okay, any chance of further hunting this morning is totally gone!   So JD and I look around, and find......Nothing.  No tufts of hair, nothing.  That is good, because the deer had taken off into the flooded timber, and the last thing I wanted was an injured doe, or one that would die off in the woods where we couldn't get it.

But still, I MISSED!  HOW!?!?!  (Not that I'm trying to brag, but I am a very good shot) So we set up a target, and checked it out, and my sight was off.  WAYYYY off.  Grrrrr!!!!!!  So we sighted it in, and now it is dead on.

So this morning I get up and head out into the blind again, and about the same time as the second doe was out yesterday, I saw something in my peripheral vision, and glanced to my right to see a deer standing 20 feet away from me.  She walked along the fence, walked under the fence and headed to the corn.  Yes, walked under the fence.  She was the tiniest little thing I had ever seen that didn't have spots.  So I watched her as she munched down on corn for a good 20-25 minutes.  I text-messaged the kids, "do you see the deer?"  They didn't.
(Don't you love technology?  Texting the kids in the house from the hunting blind  )  So I watched the little thing for a while, hoping another one would join her, but not today.

Sigh.

And so continues the waiting and shivering game.

Herpetology

The other day, JR went out the the shed, and came back saying he thought there was a snake out there.  I went to look, and found a VERY fresh snake shedding, it was still moist.  We are pretty sure it is from a rat snake.

We thought it was really neat how well the head came out!

We added it to our collection of "finds" in the classroom :-)

Science experiment: air pressure, gliders

06:05 PM, Thursday, November 6, 2008 .. Posted in Homeschooling .. 0 comments .. Link
JR had an experiment for science the other day, learning about air pressure and its effect on wings.  For this experiment, he needed to make two gliders.......

Then he had to throw them.  Since it was wet outside, we used the hall way.

And then he had to measure.....

(Yes, my hallway is lined with feed bins.....horse feed, goat feed, chicken, rabbit, etc.)

He threw the gliders 10 times each, and the glider with the long narrow wings consistently flew further than the glider with the short wide wings.

Here we go, today is the day.

Election Day!

I think the tv and radio just need to stay off.  I can't stomach any more of the political hashing.

I think I'll check the news tomorrow and see the aftermath.
