It's a wonderful life

I love the movie It's a wonderful life.  How a bout you?   I love the love story, faith, how people help one another out.   What made me and my best friend Janet laugh was how much the price of a home was.  In the movie they talked about a home costing $5000.00 !!  For some people that is just a monthly payment not the total price of a new home!!

What happened to those days??  When a neighbor cared and help out a neighbor??  When you broke down (cars) people would help.  Where you would share you blessing more, like the extra in your garden.  Where people really respected each other.  When it was safer for children to be children.  What do we have for the kids today?  On t.v we have sex, drugs, drinking violence , porn.  Do you know that some underwear adds would have been porn back then??  What happened???  We need to go back to stronger values , to what is really important.  God , family , friends, others.

Bring back the good old days......

God Bless, mj

Our eyes were opened

Hubby and I talked last night about the girls and how spoiled they are.  How it came about was we had the roof repair man come over to look at the leak.  He asked why we wanted to build a large house at our ranch.  I told him the home that is there  is only 1082 square feet and this house we live in is feeling smaller to us because we would like the grand babies to have a room just for them.  How many square feet is this house he asked?  1500 square feet.  He said his family of 4 live in a 865 square foot home.  ( I feel bad for looking at a 4200 square foot home).

Then our daughter Shayna drove up, he asked if that was her truck? I looked at him and said yes.  He just looked at me.  He then asked if Kristi will be getting her own car?  I said yes ,as soon as we can find the truck we are looking for.  Then the girls started talking about what kind of 2 horse trailer they want because our 4 horse is to much from them to  haul just 2 horse or pigs.  The man asked me if we were going to buy them a 2 horse trailer?  I said yes.  He then had a look on his face that said they are spoiled.

It really open my eyes!!  They are really spoiled!!  Most children in a family do not each get their own trucks or a horse trailer.  They would use mom and dads.  They will share a horse trailer though. We do need a two horse trailer, it is not just for them.  When we go to horse shows it is a waste of gas to haul a huge 4 horse trailer with just an Arabian and a pony.

So last night we talked and it was really an eye opener for us both to see that our children have never wanted for anything.  My husband has worked very hard to give us what we need and more.  But we realize we need to change some things.  To see it through some ones else's eyes was the opener.   We are going to change some things.    I am not bragging or anything like that just sharing my growing some more.  It was just a real eye opener.  I mean a real eye opener !!

God Bless, mj

Thanksgiving Trouble

Do you think a husband should talk to his wife about who is coming to Thanksgiving  dinner before anyone else(his mom)??    I found out from my mother-in-law that my husbands cousin , her hubby and 3 children are coming to dinner.   I asked hubby why did he not tell me me?   He told me I was making a big deal over nothing.   I said no ,but as your wife I should find out from you not your mom leaving a message as to who is coming to dinner.   As it is his mom is telling me when she will be here staying in a hotel , for how many days and when hubbies grandma will be here(our house) and how many days she will stay with us for me to care for !!

I can not care for his grandma by my self, the girls will have to help.  My leg is still broken after 11 months, I have to have more surgery, I walk with a limp and am not anywhere near as strong as I was.  How am I to pick up and carry his grandma in and out of the tub to giver her a bath and pick her up when she falls??    I love his grandma , and will do my best.

Oh well, God Bless, mj

Changes in the plan- its okay.

Remember when I said my menu plan was more of a set of guidelines?
We didn’t have the monkey bread on Monday as some family members were having issues at the dinner table and we decided it would be best to all go to bed early.
Yesterday evening we had an impromptu trip to Menards for some replacement pipes and fittings for the kitchen sink.
I should probably add here that yesterday, on my list of
Things I Hadn’t Planned On Doing (remember this?) was scrubbing ¾ of the kitchen floor.
On my hands and knees.
Why only ¾? Because
Flylady says that housework- even when done incorrectly (or in my case not completely) still blesses your family.
Huh?
Well, we’ve got skiffs of snow, layers of mud and leaves and 3 kids who are constantly tramping in afore mentioned bits of nature. And with more snow on the way- I quickly decided that the high traffic door to door path in the kitchen could
stay as is.  My wrists and knees muttering protests helped to ease my conscience greatly.
Anyhoo, I quickly decided to make the most of trip by trying to do next week’s shopping since Aldi’s is just down the road. This is still a pantry week but being ever frugal-minded . . . . not to mention I’ve now checked off something from next week’s To Do List . . . .
This of course would all be taking place during evening dining time. No quick
Mickey-D’s stop for us though- I’m sticking to my pantry budget week.
I quickly put together mini-sandwiches with leftover chicken salad and other lunch meats we always keep on hand, tossed some Clementine oranges in the bag, napkins, plates (just in case) and a still-warm-just-sliced loaf of chocolate cherry friendship bread. Voila.
Light dinner on the road.
I also grabbed the current family read-aloud:
The Fighting Ground by Avi- very intense and riveting.
We whipped through Aldi’s in record time- the kids have the loading and unloading and packaging routine down pat. It was fun to watch Mr. Steady marvel at them. As for Menards, Mr. Steady looked for the things on his list- when a man goes to a store like that- he’s always got more things on his list than the thing that necessitated the going to the store in the first place—anyway- the kiddos and I enjoyed the Christmas displays- the trees plus the little ceramic villages.
This then lead to the kidlets asking for a Christmas movie for watching after we got home. Mickey’s Christmas Carol.
And so while it wasn’t the dinner or the evening I had envisioned for us- it was
still quality family time.
And that’s what matters most.
Well, that and sticking to the pantry budget.

I love the liquid coffee creamers that come in all kinds of yummy flavors, but… I don’t like the unhealthy ingredients they contain. So every now and again I try my hand at making my own with better quality ingredients. I made this one today and I hope you enjoy it too!
.
.
Pumpkin Pie Coffee Creamer
Crystal Miller

1 cup half-n-half
½ cup cane juice crystals (can use white sugar instead)
3T canned pumpkin
½ t vanilla
½ t cinnamon
¼ t ginger
1/8 t nutmeg
1/8 t cloves

Combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan. Heat until cane juice crystals dissolved and ingredients are well combined. Enjoy in a hot cup of coffee. Store in refrigerator.

TACKY or frugal smarts?

Tackiness vs. simplicity
poor etiquette vs. saving $$ and a tree or two
We send out quite a few Christmas cards each year. Last year I was able to save some pennies by making Christmas postcards to send out- saved by making them myself and saved on postage.
This year the budget is even tighter.
So------ I’m thinking of sending Christmas greetings
via e-cards through Dayspring.
I must ask- Is this a big no-no on the etiquette scale?
Will I be vilified?
Of course, I can’t do all my cards this way as there are still some people on my list that don’t have email but I could cut my list way down.
By my calculations, I could
save myself $20 easily.
I don’t know about you but $20 is a lot of cash here—in fact, that’s half the weekly grocery budget!

We found a house

We found a house we like.  It is a 7 bedrooms,  4 baths 4200 square feet and on almost 3/4 acre, only for 350 thousand!! , we are in California remember.   We were emailed it and just loved the pictures and how it sounded.  We went to see it and it is two house not one house!   Ugh!!!    Why do they not tell you that when you are looking at a few to see?   They know what you want, so why do they waste my time??

We are going to look at another one, but this one is smaller only 3 bedrooms, 2 bath and 2300 square feet , but it has the land we want.

We are just looking at this time as we still have our ranch and love it there.  We will see where and if God wants us to move, but we keep looking.

God Bless, mj

Giving 3 days straight

We sure do know how to stretch out a good thing here. We’ll be celebrating Thanksgiving for 3 days! Can you imagine the leftovers?
The good thing is that I will be contributing to the various meals not making everything for 3 days.
Whew!
Thanksgiving Day will be spent at my parents’ home. I’ll be bringing spoonbread and my famous Triple Fudge Brownies. Mr. Steady will be fixing up his scrumptious Dirty Mashed Potatoes. I think the girls and I may make a loaf of bread too.
The Day After Dinner, as it is now known, is spent with Mr. Steady’s parents. We cherish this quirky tradition as it means we get to spend some great quality time with his parents (it’s a gi-normous family). A few years ago we sucked Mr. Steady’s sister and kids into the tradition- since her hubby is always working that day. Foodwise: we try to keep to serving leftovers- another tradition. Mr. Steady does fry a turkey breast because we just love it. We have leftover mashed potatoes and spoonbread, his mama brings cranberries, a pie and a Jell-O salad. His sister brings her amazing potato rolls and at least one veggie side dish. I laughingly make a boxed stuffing mix to round it all out.
This year my sister and her hubby have invited the family to their home for the
Day After After Dinner. [This is the “off year” that my siblings each spend with their in-laws on TG day.] Since this is a first I don’t know what the plan is. I am currently waiting for my sister to inform me of what I am bringing to the event besides myself and 4 other hungry souls.
I have to admit I’m getting a bit antsy as I’m working on my grocery list. I’m a bit of a nervous-ervous. I don’t normally grocery shop during Thanksgiving week. But Mr. Steady and I are hoping for some better sales in the local flyers and so we have put off some of the holiday shopping. Yikes!
We made this week a pantry week so that we could save this week’s grocery money, combine it with next week’s and hopefully stock up on some things.
Still, it makes me feel like I’m waiting until the last minute to get all my ducks in a row . . . .

Fires in California

I do not know if you see on your news things about California , but we are having major fires.  We have 6 going and 3 of them are close around us.   We live in Chino.  Chino Hills was Chino to, until they changed it to Chino Hills ( it was always just called the hills) because they did not to live in a city that has a prison.  Carbon canyon is also part of Chino Hills (Chino).   We live a few miles form Diamond Bar and Corona.  We have fires all around us.  We are praying for the people who lost their homes and for all the people helping out.  So many people lost it all.

People were evacuated 3 miles from us.   It has been very smokey and it looks like it snowed due to the ash.   It is fall but we have been in the 90's.   Hubby had such a hard time getting home from work on Friday.  The 3 freeways were closed as was Carbon Canyon.   It took him over 2.5 hours to drive the 17 miles home!!
