It's a wonderful life
I love the movie It's a wonderful life. How a bout you? I love the love story, faith, how people help one another out. What made me and my best friend Janet laugh was how much the price of a home was. In the movie they talked about a home costing $5000.00 !! For some people that is just a monthly payment not the total price of a new home!!
What happened to those days?? When a neighbor cared and help out a neighbor?? When you broke down (cars) people would help. Where you would share you blessing more, like the extra in your garden. Where people really respected each other. When it was safer for children to be children. What do we have for the kids today? On t.v we have sex, drugs, drinking violence , porn. Do you know that some underwear adds would have been porn back then?? What happened??? We need to go back to stronger values , to what is really important. God , family , friends, others.
Bring back the good old days......

Saving money
Every one likes to save money on groceries. I usually don't use cupons, but last week my ddil showed me a web site that I could print off cupons. Now I know that some of you are pros on this, yes this old granny can be taught new tricks. Our local store ( we only have one major one) had some good sales on Thanksgiving foods. And I was able to print off several cupons for things I wanted. Well I saved $118.75 or 55% of my total bill. I was thrilled. All my married life I have bought in bulk and cooked from scratch, so most cupons aren't usable for me, but now I see some possiblities. Of course time to research the cupons could be a problem .
My immediate family now numbers 65, children and grandchildren, Only 24 will be eating at our table this year. That means 24 pies .
My ddil offered to do 4 of them. The most I have made at one time was 32. I will try to photograph them. I want to wish all of you a very enjoyable Thanksgiving day.
Our eyes were opened
Hubby and I talked last night about the girls and how spoiled they are. How it came about was we had the roof repair man come over to look at the leak. He asked why we wanted to build a large house at our ranch. I told him the home that is there is only 1082 square feet and this house we live in is feeling smaller to us because we would like the grand babies to have a room just for them. How many square feet is this house he asked? 1500 square feet. He said his family of 4 live in a 865 square foot home. ( I feel bad for looking at a 4200 square foot home).
Then our daughter Shayna drove up, he asked if that was her truck? I looked at him and said yes. He just looked at me. He then asked if Kristi will be getting her own car? I said yes ,as soon as we can find the truck we are looking for. Then the girls started talking about what kind of 2 horse trailer they want because our 4 horse is to much from them to haul just 2 horse or pigs. The man asked me if we were going to buy them a 2 horse trailer? I said yes. He then had a look on his face that said they are spoiled.
It really open my eyes!! They are really spoiled!! Most children in a family do not each get their own trucks or a horse trailer. They would use mom and dads. They will share a horse trailer though. We do need a two horse trailer, it is not just for them. When we go to horse shows it is a waste of gas to haul a huge 4 horse trailer with just an Arabian and a pony.
So last night we talked and it was really an eye opener for us both to see that our children have never wanted for anything. My husband has worked very hard to give us what we need and more. But we realize we need to change some things. To see it through some ones else's eyes was the opener. We are going to change some things. I am not bragging or anything like that just sharing my growing some more. It was just a real eye opener. I mean a real eye opener !!

Wondering
Have any of you ever noticed that when your spouse is away things seem to happen around the house that normally don't happen when your spouse is home?
Here is a prime example: Don had been called out to help out with a rig blow-out in another Province, in the first few days after he had be gone things seemed to be going really well. Then at Day 7 I think it was, the furnace stopped blowing any air at all, it would merely make the sound that it was warming up and that was all and because it was a very cold and windy day we brought in a space heater and turned the oven on to help generate some heat in the house - other than those two things going there was no heat. So, when my Beloved called me to give me an update on how things were going on his end, he casually asked "So, how are things with you?" to which I sweetly replied "Do you really want to know?????"
When I had explained to him everything that was going on his first response was "Call Steve". Thankfully we have some very wonderful friends that, as soon as they heard what was happening, told me they would be out in the morning to see what could be done about it - I didn't even have to ask if they would do this, I simply told them what was happening with the furnace and the offer was there without any hesitation at all. Wouldn't the world be a much better place if we were all blessed with friends like this?
So, long story short - our furnace is shot, for the time being. It needs a new squirrel cage and, if I remember correctly, a new motor. The parts should be in on Monday and then we will hopefully have heat in our home again (without the aid of space heaters ).
Oh, yes, I totally forgot to mention about the screen door - the other day when it was soooooooo incredibly windy, the wind caught the screen door (because it hadn't been latched properly from when the dog had been let in) and whipped it open .... when this happened, it ripped the screws out of the door frame that holds that air shock for the screen door (the one that is supposed to make sure that the screen door closes).
Oh, well - I have discovered a few blessings through this time (1) the beauty of having friends there when a need arises - without even having the request for help verbalized to them. (2) the weather has not been -40 (thank you Lord for keeping the weather nice during this time). (3) I really, really, really appreciate all that Don does around our home to keep things running smoothly for us and (4) how well the kids are handling this latest adventure in our lives - they truly are amazing kids .
CHRISTmas Questions Part II
Got this one from Jen...
1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? YES! lol Usually bags for friends and wrapping for family. Don't know why, it just ends up that way. My FAVORITE wrap is brown paper tied w/twine or raffia w/some sort of CHRISTmas Stampin' Up stamps.
2. Real tree or Artificial? We used to do the real ones, but I pick up quills ALL year, so we have used a fake one for years. Last year, however, we got the most wonderful tree!! It's very rustic - just the way I like it - it has just a touch of "snow" (so it doesn't look 'cheap') and pine cones and we put only vintage and rustic ornaments on it. LOVE IT! I hate to take it down!
3. When do you put up the tree? If not the day after Thanksgiving, then the weekend following.
5. Do you like eggnog? No.
6. Favorite gift received as a child? Hmmm...my Barbie Dream House. I'm old enough that it was the second edition, still cardboard, but it was WAY cool!!
7. Hardest person to buy for? My mom. She's very well off and has 2 of everything.
8. Easiest person to buy for? My dog, Maggie!
9. Do you have a nativity scene? Yes; it's the one my family has had since I was about 3 years old and is starting to fall apart. I'd like to get replacement Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus and a few animals from the company that does the wooden angels for all occasions (shoot, can't think of the name). While I'm at it ... I CAN'T STAND to see the wise men in a nativity scene!! They didn't find Jesus until He was 2 years old, for Pete's sake...so put them waaaaay over on the other side of the house that they can make a journey of it!
10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Both. If I have your e-mail address, you'll probably get an e-mail; family and friends w/o e-mail get cards.
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? OK...I'm serious here...no joke...My dear grandma was a very frugal gal, having lived through the Depression she was always thinking of USEFUL things to give. The first CHRISTmas we were married she gave us a can of Crisco w/a bow on top!! lol
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? White CHRISTmas.
13. When do you start shopping? Usually in December.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yes. 'Nuff said.
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? My mom's stuffing!
16. Lights on the tree? White.
17. Favorite Christmas song? O Holy Night and I Wonder as I Wander. I have a really beautiful arrangement of 'I Wonder...' that I worked out on my hammered dulcimer.
18.Travel at Christmas or stay home? We usually go to my mom's house.
19. Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer’s? Possibly...um...no.
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? A rustic star.
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? We have our OWN family CHRISTmas on CHRISTmas Eve morning - when the girls were little we were always rushing all over the place and we weren't making OUR OWN memories and they couldn't enjoy their news clothes or toys. So, when our oldest was about 5 we started our own tradition on the day before.
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year. The emphasis on Santa and stores putting up CHRISTmas - eh hem - I mean 'holiday' decorations BEFORE halloween!!
23. Favorite ornament theme or color? Rustic, vintage.
24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? Didn't I answer that? My mom's stuffing.
25. What do you want for Christmas this year? A digital camera.

Favorite holiday memory as a child:
When I was about 11, I couldn’t sleep one Christmas Eve night and I had my radio on. It was about 2a.m. and Nat King Cole’s “Chestnuts Roasting” came on while huge, fluffy snowflakes floated down outside my windows. Ahhhh.
8.
When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
2nd or 3rd grade.

10.
How do you decorate your Christmas Tree?
We got a new Christmas tree last year that is very real-looking w/just a little ‘snow’ and pinecones on it. We put away many of our more trendy ornaments for the girls to have one of these days and now only use the more vintage and backwoods-looking ornaments. It’s very rustic and I LOVE IT!!

nope – don’t do the Santa-thing here.
25.
Who do you normally spend Christmas with?
Our family ~~ Christmas Eve day is for our own family; the weekend before Christmas day is w/Ty’s side of the family, Christmas Day is usually w/my side of the family.

A Warm Fire :) ~ Self Reliance & Security
It finally got chilly enough here in my area of Oklahoma that we had to keep the fire going in our new woodstove all night. I slept in the living room on the couch because my husband was a little nervous about it as we've never had a woodstove. I woke up at 3:10 am and it was out, just coals. But it was so toasty warm, 68 degrees. I put another log on and soon it was burning again. It's a brand new woodstove, and the booklet that came with it said that it will have an odor from the paint for awhile. I'll be glad when that smell wears off. It's kind of stinky.
With the economy getting so bad, this woodstove gives me a somewhat a sense of security. We have used propane for the last 12 years, the cost rising more each year. Last year alone, we paid over $2,000 to the propane company. We still have propane as our water heater is fueled by it, and we keep our home heater set at about 55 so that if the fire does go out in the middle of the night and it gets too cold, the heater will kick on and we won't freeze to death. Work for my husband is slowing down. He is paid commission on what he does (he's an auto technician), and there's just not as much work as there used to be, so we're noticing some effects of the economy. His employer just implemented a new insurance policy in which the employees insurance is no longer paid by the employer. So, needless to say, our monthly insurance for my husband and son is going up about $160 per month. If I were on the policy, it would be $700 a month total for the worst option they give.
Just having this woodstove helps me to feel more secure in this time of trouble in the economy. I know that if we don't have the money to pay our electricity or propane, we will still be warm! Not just the economy though, there have been times that we had no heat during ice storms, or power outages due to bad weather, downed lines, etc. Now, we will be able to stay warm even during those times. It's kind of neat how a thing as simple as a woodstove adds such a feeling of security.
While I'm thinking about it, I'm going to get a metal pan, put some water and a few cloves in it and put it on the stove top. Hope you all have a lovely day!

Jamie
small update again on my crafting..
I took some pictures of my progress on the mini wall hangings. I normally buy things like kits from Jack Dempsey to embroider. This is my first project that I planned out on my own. I took some things from different pictures I seen and tried to put them together. They are about half done, but are going rather quickly.
I signed up for a Christmas swap so need to start thinking of what to make. This is a late one and I only have till the first of Dec. to mail it so it needs to be quick and easy....
Here are the mini wall hangings~
