Summer's last days...

{ 07:28, Thursday, September 4, 2008 } { Posted in Family Life } { 9 comments } { Link }

The weather has been blustery and rainy here the past few days on the homestead. It hasn't been this cold since April!  We have had temps in the high 50's and low 60's...... so unusual for NW Missouri in early September.  I am ever so thankful for the moisture, as we needed it. The grass was beginning to become brown up and the last few days of rain has "greened up" everything again.

No doubt about it.... fall is on the way!  Did I mention that fall is my favorite season of the year? The colors are spectacular here in October ~~ our homestead has a good 25 acres or so of Oaks, Maples & Walnuts.... so the colors are something to behold. I am looking foward to that.

On the home front we are busy, busy renovating our "parlor"...... it's not too big of a room ~~ about 15 x 16 or so..... but it faces south and gets lots of sun, and overlooks the woods and fields. This is a favorite place to sit and read on a cold winter day. We have stained the new wood windows, and have painted the cieling and installed a new light/fan. We are almost done with the wallcoverings..... I chose a very "old fashioned pattern"..... it actually looks like the original pattern that we discovered under the sheetrock! It makes things look very "old" and I am excited about that!

I apologize that I have been remiss at posting photos of our recent renovations. Life is so full with schooling, renovating, and all the other "stuff" that this mama has to do each day. I am finding I am only able to blog a few times each week as life is simply filled to the brim. ( No complaints here)

In the kitchen we have been busy baking some fall treats...... the weather put me in the mood for pumpkin pies! So, this afternoon my eldest daughter and I were busy making some for desert. I am so happy to share that my 13 yr old daughter has truly mastered the knack of making homemade pie crusts and does a superb job! She is going to be such a blessing to her future husband and family! She loves to help me in my homemaking endeavors and she is a precious helper to have around!

The pumpkin candle is burning........and the air does have a nip to it in the evenings now.

Supper is in the oven ready to serve....... a hot pan full of swedish meatballs.

It's that time of year...... when smells fill the home........

Well I am off to spend the evening serving my beloved family.

May God bless each and everyone of you!

What a season

Gloria,

I absolutely LOVE the fall as well. The turning of the leaves. The coolness of the night. Chili on the stove and apple as well as pumpkin pies on the window sills like my gramma used to do.
I seem to come out of hiding during this time as I'm extremely light complection and burn as well as overheat easily.
We're waiting for the Applefest in October. Thats when I REALLY feel the fall. Picking Apples, making apple butter, jam and sauce as well as picking pumpkins to carve.
It's just a soft, warm season.
I can almost feel the comfort of your Parlor. Oh to look out at the back woods with a cuppa tea staring out at the sun contemplating on Gods word. What comfort of all that He has made.

Blessings!

Rebekah

Hi Gloria,
It's funny reading about your south-facing room being sunny. In this part of the world it's the north-facing rooms that get the sun.
We are gearing up for summer here after a long winter. I feel like I'm at the start of a marathon race - just waiting for all the plants and garden to burst into life so we can get going.
Your pumpkin-scented candle sounds lovely.

You are like me then Gloria, because I adore fall. It has been rainy and blustery here too (makes me think of Winnie the Pooh using the word blustery), and I was actually excited to get out the long sleeves today when we had to get out to run errands. LOL I decorated yesterday, and yes I have a fall smelling candle burning as well. Ahhhhhh fall..........I love it!!!

Good luck on all the renovation. It is hard, but usually well worth the hard work and wait. I hope you will post a picture when you are done.

God's Blessings,
Amy Jo

You are such an inspiration to me. I so value your blog highly and love to read about your "daily lives" on your homestead, your children are so blessed to have you as their "mommy". But they probably already know that. What a glorious house you have and please try and share the pictures of your remodeling. I LOVE your farmhouse, that is the kind I would own in my dreams, really it is, I LOVE the wrap around porch you are blessed with. I have said since I was a little girl that I wanted an old farmhouse with a wrap around porch. But we are content in our home, we have remodeled our 5 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath rancher the way we want it, so I will just read your lovely blog and look at your beautiful home. I wish we were closer, I would really love to come for a visit, but I guess the bloggin world will have to do.
Thank you for sharing, and may God Bless you and your family..
Lisa

Fall is My Favorite Too...

Dearest Gloria,

Thank you for stopping by Honey Hill Farm today. I am just delighting in my gentle day and hope you are doing the same.

As to the doily...I think I purchased it at a craft show. It was quite awhile ago, so I am not completely sure. You might try the Internet and search for "crocheted doily". I am sure there a few sites with crochet for sale.

Well, off to put up pickles...yikes!

Yours kindredly,
Shan

Summer's Last Days

Hi Gloria!
I enjoyed reading your post, it made me feel like I was sitting in that palor with you, I could almost smell that pie! I would like to live in a state where you actually have seasons ( not that I am complaining, Lord, I thank You for Your blessings). Here Florida we usually have a mild winter, once in a great big while we might get a snow flake LOL, but mostly it just gets ugly while the trees loose their leaves. Most winters I don't even wear a coat, just a sweater will do. Your place sounds really nice. Thanks for sharing part of your family with the rest of us. Regina

greetings!

Thanks for stopping by on my blog :) Would love to see pictures of your renovation project. Your post makes me want to bake today--despite the 92 degree temps and horrid humidity! Fall is my favorite season too! My kids were thrilled to see some of our pumpkins growing! I can't wait to feel the autumny breezes--it always feels like God is hugging me and letting me know He's there. Blessings to you and yours!

Gloria,
Thank you for your encouraging words. I truly KNOW that God will provide... We know He has a plan for us. He is our peace..
Also, I adore Fall. It just makes me want to snuggle and drink a hot cup of coffee. :) It is still very much Summer here, but hopefully we will get that nip in the air very soon.
Have a beautiful day.
Love,
Chas
