Home Is Where My Heart Is

Mixed bag of blatherings and emotions

The first snow has occurred.
It is official.
Winter really is here.
I think, I am going to cry.
I should love the winter.
It is created by God.
I just don't like the cold.
I just don't.

Black Friday
Every year my oldest goes with me.
SO
when I have bought her gifts, she is with me.
THIS YEAR I bought her gift...
When we got home, she wanted to open it
and play with it.
So I asked all 3 kids this question
"Are you saying to me, that it is NOT important that you have a gift to open on 'christmas morning'?"
They said, "No, it's not important".
Hmmmmmmmm
Now. I can say that this answer is part
greed.
I want it now.
However, what they didn't say, spoke volumes.
They didn't say:
"It wouldn't be christmas without presents".
I think, and I could be wrong,
But
I think only giving them 3 presents for years
has kept them from the
"gimme more / is that it"
mentality.

So I told them
Ok so we can call off 'christmas'?
They didn't mind.
Their not hung up on it.
Maybe this is the year to eliminate tradition
and start celebrating.
Maybe.

I waited on a family birthday party last night.
It was Mrs. ______ 90th birthday.
Can you imagine what that woman has seen?
She will have seen more in her first 40 years
than I will see in my life time
(unless Jesus comes back)
I would LOVE to sit and chat with her for hours.
Imagine the stories she would tell.

My camera arrived yesterday
OOOOOOO
I can't wait to use it.
It's gonna be SO cool.

I wish there were good deeds I could do
that didn't involve people.
:-)
I am peopled out.
I want to be a big ole bear and hibernate
for the next 5 months.
I do not choose friends well,
and I don't want my kids to follow that pattern.
I don't know why I don't
have healthy relationships.....
Maybe they don't exist?
I wonder what a 'healthy friendship' looks like?

This situation in India.
muslim extremist.
They carefully planned what they did.
They knew who they wanted to kill.
Americans, Brit's, Jews.
How can the media portray these people as
anything other than
je-hadist?
It is a Holy War.

I saw a bumper sticker yesterday.
It read:
If you can read this, thank a teacher.
If you can read this in English, thank a soldier.
Amen.
I wonder, when God gave the Jews the Promised Land
if they felt guilty for being so blessed?
I wonder if they totally bad mouthed the Holy Land
that God blessed them with?
I wonder if they cursed the abundance He blessed
them with?
He turned the desert into fertile soil for His Chosen.
Do you think they say to one another
"We are gluttons, look!  at our neighbors who
want to destroy us, they are poor
and we a rich, shame on us?"
Or did they say
"Thank you Lord for your abundance and your Blessing
and your protection"?
Is this where the "remnant" comes in?
This small amount of people who realize it is God
who gives this blessing
and
it is God who chooses who He will bless
and
it is God who provides us with protection?
I don't know about anyone else,
But
I am so thankful for God's Blessing.
He said in Genesis 12
He would bless those who blessed Israel
and
He would curse those who cursed Israel.
I am so thankful for a God who keeps His Word.
I am so thankful that I live in the
United States of America.
I am so thankful I am free.
And
I am so thankful for the men and women who
willing
sign up to protect her.
Not only do they protect me, and my rights, and my
freedoms.........
But they fight for those who bad mouth America.
Who bad mouth our blessing.
Who try to make other feel guilty about
our abundance.
They fight for those who do not
appreciate what they do.
They fight for those who wish them ill.
They fight for those who curse the land
they protect.....
And they protect, fight and even die for
those who hate them.

God Bless our Soldiers.
Thank you.

The Old Fashioned Parlor

{ Posted by blessed mom }
{ 06:11, Saturday, November 29, 2008 } { 10 comments } { Link }

Long ago,  "the parlor" was a place where the family would gather after a busy day of hard work..... a place where families would gather to sing a song around the piano as mother or sister played a tune.... a place where the family would sit and listen to the radio for hours of enjoyment......

Does your home have such a place?

In our old 110 yr old farmhouse we have such a room...... we have tried to recreate some of that "old fashioned" wholesomeness that just can't be found in the modern homes of today.... our parlor serves many purposes in our family. It is the place where I meet the Lord each morning.... as the sun streams in thru the windows in the morning... it is the place I gather my children together for prayer, for worship, and for our daily bible readings...... it is the place we play games, sing songs, and it is the place where I sit at the end of the day to read aloud to my children..........

There's the piano where my beautiful daughter hannah often sits for hours and plays, while we sing and lift our voices......we even have an old fashioned radio that we enjoy....... it plays CD's too...

Then there's the comfort of sitting and enjoying each other's company......I guess I could have gone with a more "modern" decor.... but I oh so wanted to "recreate" yesteryear.......lace curtains don the windows..... doiles on the couches....... a crocheted afghan to place on cold knees......we draped the walls with an old fashioned wallpaper similiar to the one the walls originally had......

It's wonderful to see the house a glow from a distance..... the lamps turned on to elude a shining warmth emanating from the front room that houses our "parlor"......

My 15 yr old son and I were in the city last week and he noticed that the houses all appeared so dark......so few were lit at dusk........ he mentioned to me how much he loved driving up to our old farmhouse to see the whole house lit up....... I reminded him that many families have both mom & dad working, so no one is home to "turn on the lights" sort of speak......

I hope that as home keepers we  may never doubt the work we do in our homes to keep the "lights on" in our homes and hearts......... to make room in our busy lives for time to gather to share, to sing..... to pray, to worship........ to listen , to laugh and to "be" together as families, surrounded by our loved ones.

As my children grow & mature, they now share with me how very important this role is in their lives...... how much comfort they take that there is a place called "home" that they know will always have the lights on ,  waiting for them with open arms....

This is the essense of being a home keeper......

May God bless each of you as you keep your home fires bright & burning!

my misery

I am sick.  ugh
headache (I have an ice mask on right now.... but it warms so fast, and soon it will have to go back to the freezer)
earache (I put in some GOOT and that took care of the pain, but the ringing is still there anytime my children sing or hum repetatively - which is ALL the time, and normally, I love the songs they sing...)
sore throat (I am making some lemon herb tea with Eucalyptus honey - that is always good)
tired body (I am headed upstairs to sleep)
floaty head - do you know what I mean?  My head and body feels like it is floating around, not really connected to anything.  That probably has something to do with my ears, eh?
slight nausea - is this a symptom of whatever I have right now, or is it a side effect of all the mucus hanging out in my throat aggrevating my all-too-sensative-because-of-pregnancy-gag-reflex?

and other side effect - I cannot spell today.  so I apologize for my worse-than-usual spelling.  ow - I need more goot in my ears.  good night.

First Snow of the Season...

The children are all excited.... they are busily putting on hats, gloves and boots to head outside to enjoy the first soft snow of the season.....it's really a "wet" snow right now, but it's supposed to get colder as the evening comes and we should have some snow on the ground by morning. What a wonderful way to begin the CHRISTmas season!

I hope you are all enjoying a lovely Thanksgiving weekend!

Praising Him!

ps. I have changed my blog template to reflect the changing of the season.......

Black Friday Observations

It's Saturday morning.

Reflecting on the last two days.

Thanksgiving was 'different' but in a good
kind of way.
Just us, no stress, no 'putting on airs'.
Something I have to 'get comfortable with' is the fact
I do not have a 'big family'.
I do not have a big circle of 'friends'.
I need to be content with what God has blessed me with.
1 dh, 3 kids, 2 dogs, and an old cat.

We have plenty of leftovers, and will be
creating new meals with all of the extra meat.
My local grocery had turkey on sale, so I bought a 22lb
bird, for the left overs!

Went to bed Thursday night at a decent hour, and woke
up at 4:30 am for the sales.
My daughter and I have done this for 12 years.
Let me tell you what I saw in "my town".
To the north of me is a town, hurting.
75% of the people who live in this town
(6 figure population)
work in the Big 3 auto factories.
That is what keeps this town afloat.
When we went to Kohl's, I didn't see the crazed
harried people searching for the latest "what everyone else has".
I saw carts full of every day clothes.
Bath towels.
Blankets, pillows.
Sure, those things were on sale....
but my point is they were not buying the silly stuff.
They were buying necessities.
It was busy, had a long line....but nothing like
years past.

Ok onto the next town (6 figures too).
My "usual haunts" are not packed to capacity with people.
All day, we never parked more than 10 spaces from the front
doors of where we were shopping.
Dicks Sporting goods..........empty.
Best Buy......busy, but not insane.
Michael's, Petsmart, Barnes and Noble?
NOT busy at all.
Not even "Saturday after noon busy".

My daughter and I went to the NEXT town
of 6 figures +
THERE they have a HUGE shopping mall
Miles and miles of strips malls.
SURELY, SURELY we will hit traffic.........
Nope.

The busiest store we shopped at?
The music store.
Not Target, Not Kohl's, Not Michael's.
The sales this year?
Lame.
Every year they are less and less enticing.
Unless you are buying eletronics.
THEN
You can just shop on line and not mess with the crowds.
I bought my camcorder on line Thanksgivng Day,
for the Black Friday price.
It shipped, on black friday.
I can wait!! It's worth the wait!!

So my observation of black friday is this.
Either everyone shopped on line
or
The sales were not what the consumer is looking for
or
the economy REALLY is bad.

I am going to be sad when this weekend is over.
Reality will stand and scream in my face Monday morning.
Deep breath in.............Deep breath out.

I ate leftovers for breakfast!

Everything went OK yesterday, the turkey was a hit. I saw on one of the shows on the Food Network, they put a sliced orange and a sliced lemon in the cavity of the turkey to help it stay juicy. Well it worked! I also used some cajun injector for seasoning the inside of the meat, that too adds so much flavor. So it was a hit, thank you God, lol.

I, as usual, made too much food. I sent some home with my daughter, fed some inlaws, twice, ate supper, fed strangers that stopped by to say hello, and STILL had tons of food left.  The strangers were only strangers to me, my dh knew these men from work. Grinding keeps going on 24/7 here, there are no holidays as for as the mill bosses are concerned. Things keep running. So there were truck and tractor drivers that were stopping by the house to say hello, and I felt bad and fed them.  My husband did put his foot down on not giving away the coconut cake tho, lol.

So what do you do  with all the cornbread dressing you have left, you eat some of it for breakfast.........and lunch.............and supper. If there is any left by the end of the day, I may have to give some it the cats. LOL

I will be heading out later to face the crowds at Wal-mart, ONLY because I need a new toilet seat and some packing tape. Otherwise, I wouldn't face the crowds. I'm not one for all this shopping madness. Besides, I looked threw all the sales papers, and there wasn't anything that I wanted, lol.

Have a good day, and be safe if your out in the craziness.

how to cut a [free] turkey

We are not BIG turkey fans around here, but when the local grocery gives you turkey vouchers every time you shop, and you get some extras from a friend.... well, I got a 16# turkey for $.02.  Free food, really.
but - we are only 5 people, who have a hard time eating a 5# roast chicken in 3 meals.  So, how does one deal with 16# of meat?  Even free meat.  Well,  a little research gives some ideas......

http://www.recipetips.com/kitchen-tips/t--436/cutting-up-a-whole-turkey.asp
great illustrations of how to butcher a turkey.  Give it a minute - for some reason this site was slow to load even on my usually fast connection.

and the USU extension service has this PDF:
http://extension.usu.edu/boxelder/files/uploads/fn290.pdf.  (I hope this works - I have never linked to a PDF before...)
this is cool because it claims that you do not have to fully defrost the turkey to butcher it, and then you can refreeze the portions... definitely helpful in my situation.  It does mean that I will have to work fast though, and have freezer space ready and waiting.  Still..... a handy thing to know.

Oh, and assuming we can manage a 5# chicken in 3 meals, a 16# turkey could conceivably last us for 10-12 meals.  Not bad for 2 cents!

Have a great Thanksgiving!

From our family to yours...

Wishing you a blessed Thanksgiving!

"Over the river and through the woods
Trot fast my dapple gray.
Spring over the ground
Like a hunting hound
On this Thanksgiving Day, Hey!
Over the river and through the woods
Now Grandmother's face I spy.
Hurrah for the fun,
Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie."
- English folksong

In just an hour or so, we'll pack up our baskets of goodies and indeed be heading "through the woods" to Grandmother's house. Of course, it's now my sister's house, but it still brings those wonderful memories of gatherings and meals that Gram prepared for us. We have much to be thankful for, as always. Thank you for your visits, your sweet comments, friendship and prayers. I count you among my blessings!

A little bit of this and a little bit of that............

I guess this would be a potpourri post!

Thanksgiving day huh. Wow.....from Sept 1 to date time has FLOWN by. I think I have lost my bearings because it was cold until July 5th and then got cold again, Nov 1. We never really had a 'summer' here in central zone 5. Maybe that's what's throwing me off?
I will tell you this..............I sure would love to see a little bit of that 'global warming' the tv talks about all the time!! :-)

So today, we're cooking a typical meal.
Turkey, taters, corn, rolls (home made), gravy.........you can't go without home made gravy! Pumpkin tarts, a pheasent for my son...Not a big production. I bought a HUGE turkey so that we can take the left overs and make meals and put them in the freezer.
It will be just the family. I just could not do one more year the way we have done it in the past........For days leading up to t-giving I was a wreck......the day of I was a wreck, and the day after I had a headache and a huge mess to clean up. So this year, we all decided that this was a bad tradition, and we were gonna break free!!!
So far...........no stress! YEAH!!

Thanksgiving.
Thankful to live in a country that is so generous. I am weary of the guilt trip "we are so gluttonous, we are so arrogant, we deserve God's Judgement". Yeah.......well, news flash........who doesn't? Let's talk about the poor starving. The ones who worship false gods. The ones who openly, blatantly disregard the Creator, His Creation, His Revealed Word...............ok, somehow gluttony and arrogance is "worse"? Nope. Sin is sin. I will not 'curse the land the Lord has given me" but I will Praise Him and Thank Him for all of the abundance and blessings HE had bestowed on America.
Never ever will I feel guilty because GOD has BLESSED me!!

Tomorrow Black Friday!!
I am looking forward to seeing the ads in the paper today. Not for chirstmas gifts.......but to see if they have anything we need on sale. Like hot pads. Mine are worn out. In years past we have done 3 gifts only on christmas........but again, traditions are changing at our home. Maybe this year only 1 gift each.........maybe nothing at all.......I don't know. But things are changing.
But a good sale is still, a good sale!!

Things are going to get better.
I looked over my blog and there is so much sadness and anger, I deleted a lot. I have had many complaints about my 'vomit entries' and my "anger entries"..........I guess when I 'vent' I should label it as such so people can skip it!!

My Bible study is like sandpaper on my hiney this week!!! I will work thru it though and post my highglights!!!

Off I go to the kitchen!!
