Judgement, exhortation, fools and yes, the skirt issue

Posted in Scripture

There has been alot of discussion around here lately about judging others that do not have the same convictions as you do and I felt a need to say something.

Here is a scripture about judging others:

Matthew 7: 1-5 “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.  And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

We are called to exhort our brethren but not to judge them.

Hebrews 3:13 “Beware brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”

Here are a few about giving instruction to those that choose not to recieve it, and we all know there are some of those here at HSB.

Titus 3:9-11, “But avoid all foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions and strivings about the law: for they are unprofitable and useless.  Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.”

Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Proverbs 9:7, 8 “He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself, And he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself.  Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.”

Proverbs 12:1 “Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, But he who hates correction is stupid.”

Here are a few about our speech and what the word says about disputing, which unfortunately is what some have been doing.

Ephesians 5:29 “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”

Philippians 2:14 “Do all things without complaining or disputing,”

James 5:9 “Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door.”

Now, I do wear mainly skirts because it is a PERSONAL conviction of mine.  I do not think it is a sin to wear jeans or pants.  However, I do think it is a sin to be immodest.  I am not saying jeans are immodest and I know there are plenty of skirts in this world that are immodest. I strive for modesty in whatever I am wearing and right now, that is mainly skirts.  Who knows, next month the Lord may lead me back to jeans. All I know is that I am to follow what He has placed on MY heart.  There are several reasons I prefer skirts only and here are some of the scriptures that have led me to MY decision.

Romans 14:21 “It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak.”

1 Corinthians 10:23, 24 “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.  Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well being.”

Philippians 2:4 “Let each of you look out not for his own interests, but for the interests of others.”

Yes, I am free to wear jeans but that does not make it helpful or edifying for my brothers.  Yes, my brothers are ultimately responsible for their own thoughts and actions, but as the scripture states, I am to do all I can not to cause them to stumble.  I believe that showing my cleavage or my curves is very much a stumbling block to most men, so I choose not to.  I am not to be concerned about what I am free to do, I am to be thinking about others well being, not my own liberties.

I think we all need to remember that we are to love one another and I don't feel that tearing each other down and disputing back and forth shows much love.  I also feel that our main concern be with other's salvation and knowing the Lord.  As for those that are not of the same faith as us (Christian), we should be concerned with showing them the truth of the Word.  Their dress is a peripheral matter but the real concern is showing them the Word of God.

Blessings,

Rashel

Amen! I too consider it a PERSONAL conviction, and I at times wear jeans around the farm when working etc...or if its REALLY cold...but mainly its skirts for me!

****Thank you for you comment. I, too, have found myself in jeans around the homestead lately just because of the chilly temps this winter and it is easier to put on coveralls with jeans instead of with a skirt :)

Do your thoughts extend to the clothes that men wear? .What about clothing for athletes and dancers?. Do you judge someone by what they are wearing?. Do you assume that a woman wearing a figure hugging dress is a bad person or has no moral values?. Also is it a sin to wear lingerie for the pleasure of ones husband in the privacy of the bedroom?.

**If you are not willing to even sign your name, I won't be wasting my time answering your questions. It goes back to Titus 3:9-11.

I am sorry! I forgot to write ny name.I feel your anger.

**Ruth, first of all, I am not angry. I just won't waste my time with those that like to hide behind anonymous. Yes, I think men should dress modestly as well. As for athletes and dancers, I think every person has to stick to their own convictions about modesty no matter what the situation. I know there are some things my daughter won't be allowed to participate in if she is required to wear immodest outfits. I try not to judge others, either for what they wearing or any other reason. Yes, I may notice what they are wearing and I may feel it is immodest and I may even pray for her, but that is not judging. I don't assume anything about a person by what they are wearing, I have been around long enough to have learned that. I believe some women just dress according to the world's standards, not giving any thought to modesty. As for what you wear with your husband when in the privacy of your bedroom, that is between you and your husband and no one else's business.
Blessings,
Rashel

Thank you for replying to my questions. I think that we will agree to disagree. There is enough arguing in the world today!. My daughter swims for the high school and also participates in cheerleading. She may dress immodestly according to some but she is an A grade student and has high moral values. I myself exercise at our local gym in lycra workout clothes with men present.I have never found this a problem.I also run daily in our neighbourhood. What one wears is a small piece of who one is.

**You are welcome and yes, we will just have to agree to disagree.

I absolutely love what you have said here today. I too have felt convicted to wear skirts and dresses just about all the time. I still have jeans if I were to need or want them. Like you, I'll be wearing my dresses until God leads me back to my jeans.
Many blessings,
Leigh-Ann

Sunday, February 24, 2008 - What people wear

Posted by JubileeFarm5

I guess I dont give it a lot if thought really. I dress modestly, I have 5 boys and want to model that for them. I do notice when someone wears dresses all the time, but I actually tend to be drawn to them more as a friend because of that conviction they have, even though I myself haven;t been called to it. Great food for thought !

I get excited when someone ask a question about the Bible or what the Bible say about this or that.I will always try to help them with their questions. It seems that most of those questions are asked in sarcasim. Dumb me..........here I think someone really wants to know, someone really cares about their brothers, but they usually don't care. They are irritated by someones conviction and they do a post to tell someone that they can do what every they want to and it is nobodys bussiness. Why do they even ask? I don't understand this type of sarcasim, but I seem to fall for it every time.
I see that you had a comment here of that same type of sarcasim. They wanted to get your opinnion so they could tell you that you are wrong. If they already know what your belife is then why do they ask the question? I think it is to be sarcastic.
I never argue here, I keep explaining untill the questions are answered.

Monday, February 25, 2008 - A good reminder

Posted by blessingsbaound

Somehow the Lord always keeps me from hearing the "trouble" on this site. I have found nothing but sweet loving women and enjoy "peeking" into their homes and hearing of what the Lord is doing in their hearts. I thank you for sharing this reminder with everyone and do hope that the stife will cease wherever it may be. May we walk in unity and apprecaite the good work that He is doing in each of our lives! With much love, Mrs. Joseph Wood

I am proud of you and the skirt issue. I don't personally wear just skirts but being modest and careful about how I dress is always at the forefront of my mind. I admire that you felt convicted, heard God speaking to you on this issue and you followed Him. You didn't question God. You didn't reason it away. You didn't feel it was necessary to ask permission from those around you. You just did as God lead. You go girl!! If only all people would step out in faith in the direction that God leads them.
