Starting a Garden

Posted on 2005-Dec-28 at 09:55 - Post Comment

So honestly, do you know of any good websites or resources that can teach me how to start a garden from start to finish?  an EASY website with EASY understandable directions.  anybody? anybody? anybody? I'd be mightly obliged to hear your suggestions. I'm gonna grow me some greenbeans and watermelons.

PS if you are gonna be near Dandridge this saturday let me know and then come to mine and gena's New Years party.   I promise I won't let Gena make you take one of her pig puppies.

Try Growing Zucchini!!

They are almost always successful and they grow quick. Lettuce grows well and garlic is easy to grow. Pumpkins are fun for the kids. A fun tool to have is the Garden Weasel. I have a small garden though. You may just need a rototiller on your farm!!

Seeds

go check out DaisyChain if you haven't already, she's got a whole bunch of seed places listed. If you wanna know when to plant them check out the calandar I posted, it's cool. tells you when to plant what crop.

Try the square foot garden, it is great for beginners (I am not sure how much info the website has, but I love the book)

Thanks for asking this question. Now I have a lot of interesting links to read myself. Have fun on your new farm. 15 acres sounds fun.

You Grow Girl

Hey Jen, check out the site www.yougrowgirl.com and then click on GROW and GARDEN on the top. There are a TON of articles in there about everything you could think of. They are less of step by step and more of real life experiences, but I think it will be beneficial. Good to see you here and your land photos were beautiful over at homeschoolblogger.

Congrats on your upcoming move. Should be so much fun and so gratifying to finally have your own plot of land. Thanks for asking this question as I'm new to homesteading as well so I now have more resources to review. With spring fast approaching, these links should help. I did grow a small garden in the city and I used the "lasagna" technique of layering dirt, newspaper/compost, dirt, newspaper/compost. It worked really well and the newspaper/compost kitchen items that I threw in helped to make the soil really rich. Good luck and God's blessings on your new endeavor.

Living simply and for Him,
Sherri
