On My Way....

what a weird week it's been. Exactly one week ago we bought a
house, our very own little 15 acre farm. Well, it's not exactly a
farm, but it has an orchard on it and lots of fish in the pond and deer
in the woods (we saw five of them). We are supposed to move in on
Jan 22, and thus our homesteading adventures will begin. First
thing I need to learn how to do is start a garden. Anybody got
any pointers? I know I need dirt and some sort of seeds.
Other than that I'm pretty much at a loss.
Congratulations!

What wonderful news for you. Tell us more about your new house. Pictures! We also have 15 acres but only about 2 acres are cleared.
Hey Congratulations...

I'm SO happy for you all! Good luck with seeds and dirt and all...and with keeping those 5 deer and all their cousins away from your garden!

How exciting for you!

I can't wait to hear all about you and your family setting up house on the new place.
I will be waiting to read any ideas you are given on starting a garden. I also would like to start a small one the year.
Much love and blessings

Before you know it, you'll be hunting and trapping and milking your goats and cows.
Yeah...

water. don't forget the water.
oh yeah and light. outside. :) Jammie
oh jen - never mind the the seeds and dirt

yeah, you need seeds, you need dirt, you need the water and the light. I have never had to worry about those. It's those weeds you need to be asking about. How to prevent them..... they move in where they are not wanted. Raised beds. Do the research! Those make gardening so much more productive and efficient. Tracy has her own herb garden in raised beds. Successful gardening! So how does everyone prevent the weeds without the raised beds???? Now there is a question!

Hey Jen!

That's SO GREAT about your new place, the official "House of Igarashi", congrats and celebration! Packing everything up and hauling it to move is not much fun, but *moving in* sure is! Your house must be bustling with anticipation!;-)
I've also been thinking on my own <organic> Spring/Summer gardening... what to do differently, and how to improve it this year (will be my 3rd). One of the first decisions you want to make is whether or not you'll go all organic with it. The way I see it, putting all that work into it, you may as well, for many reasons! Anyways, here's a couple of links to get you started. These should provide you with more than enough info. to start... troubleshoot, and finish... I'm still such a complete amateur, with SO much to learn... just jump in, and don't give up! My gardening motto is "Read ALOT and Weed ALOT!";-)
TN Master Gardener's Calendar; http://www.mastergardener.net/tn/davidson/zone6.htm
http://www.pathtofreedom.com/links/index.shtml > You'll see there's lots of info./links under "Gardening"
Results of search for "garden" at Backwoods Home site;

Also, keep your eyes peeled for good books. I found "Square Foot Gardening" at a thrift store for under $1, AND another time I found a copy of "The Encyclopedia of Country Living", signed by Carla Emery, for $2! One thing I'll do differently this year is have my *plan* more together, and keep a detailed journal of everything I do with my garden. There's so many different *techniques*, tips, tricks of the trade and ways to do things, etc... depending on who ya talk to.
Also, we splurged and bought a tiller last year, after much toil... I'm sure that will help lots! The neighbor who tilled our large plot for us last year said not to be discouraged by the immense amount of weeds we'd face, having tilled that plot for the first time. He says it shouldn't be so bad this year, and even less weeds next... Have fun! I've found that I hear God's voice so often and so clearly as I garden... Enjoy!;-)
Well, first ya gotta choose a nice sunny place,
Posted by NancyBaetz on 2005-Dec-29 at 10:42 - Link
then ya gotta till the soil, and I dunno, maybe add some manure---depending on the soil there in TN. If ya want good rich soil, get yerself a compost pile. And rabbits are good little fertilizer factories. And find out when the last frost is, so you know when you can plant---but some things can be grown indoors at first, the kids can do that! But some things can be put right in the ground, like peas and radishes and stuff.
It looks like there is plenty of room there for our outfitters tent. Can we come live there? We will help with the garden. Pretty Puhleeeeeze?

Yes, I'd say start a compost pile. Also the rabbits are a great idea. We had some for about 5 years and added all that fertilizer to the compost, plus leaves and kitchen veggie peelings, tea bags, etc. My aunt and uncle started a new garden in their new country home and it was all clay, so they planted a bunch of turnips in early spring then turned them under in the soil and their garden was fine after that. A fence to keep out the deer would help, I'm sure! God bless you and your family and your new home!!!! jill
Can't Wait!

I hope to hear about many of your blessings at your new homestead.
God Bless,
