Shocking!

8:54 AM, 2008-Jan-29 .. Posted in Check This Out .. 5 comments .. Link
Allow me to share some shocking information with you all. Some states try to regulate the percentage rate that credit card companies can charge- Michigan is one of those states. The state of Michigan has set that no credit card company may set an interest rate of higher than 25%.
BUT:
We learned at court yesterday that the way the credit card companies get around this is that they are able to charge interest rates from the state the card originates in- not where the credit card holder lives. So you will find that most credit cards are issued from the state of South Dakota because they can then legally charge an interest rate of up to 30%. Yes you read that right- 30%.
WHAT??? Is it any wonder that people are having trouble with credit card debt- if you read the fine print on your statements/contract you will find that the credit card companies can raise your interest rate whenever they feel like it- and can especially take it to the maximum if you are late on a payment (and we are talking 1 day late- no grace period), go over limit, or heaven forbid, pay less than the amount stated.
One of the many things I have learned is that you must very carefully monitor your credit card statements each and every month. Check not only for purchases you didn’t make but your interest rate and if they’ve changed your payment date. They are that sneaky- really!
If your credit card company ups your rate and you feel it is unfair- CALL THEM. You have the power to negotiate your rate. If the person in customer service tells you they can’t help you blah, blah, blah- ask to speak with their supervisor. Remember to keep your voice calm and professional- do not fly off the handle or come off as demanding. State your case simply- make sure to point out your stellar credit history with them- your timely payments, paying above the minimum, how long you’ve been with them etc. If this doesn’t work for you- simply state that you will either close your account or better yet (to them) tell them that you are prepared to switch to another credit card that can offer you XX% rate (and to make sure you are not bluffing- have this info on hand- you probably get offers like this in the mail 3 or 4 times a week).
Also important- keep a call log- who you spoke with on what day and what they said in response to you.
If they turn you down- call back again the next month and the next.
As for me- personally—I will never EVER own a credit card again. I am just too tempted. I do not want to be in debt to anyone but the Lord.
Some great tools for you: Check out Dave Ramsey- he has a website and a couple of great books- I personally recommend The Total Money Make-Over (check it out at the library before spending the money on it- but I tell you- its worth buying!).
I believe I will be sharing more tips and tricks from what I have learned these past two years. I want to get the word out that you can help yourself! Really!

Homestead Type Book Review

1:07 PM, 2007-Jun-25 .. Posted in Check This Out .. 0 comments .. Link

I was able to sneak in an hour by myself at the library on Saturday and found a wonderful new series to bury my nose in. The Wortham Family Series by Leisha Kelly. I am a few chapters away from finishing the first book: Julia's Hope and am eager to dive into the next (Emma's Gift) and continue the story.
Last summer I enjoyed reading Karen Andreola's book, Pocketful of Pinecones, not just for the homeschool story but the setting and such. The book was set in the mid-1930s during the Depression. I loved the background storyline of a life of not just "making do" with what you had but finding joy in it. I loved how people reached out and helped each other- meeting each other's needs. When I finished Pocketful I couldn't help but wish the story continued.

Here's what Christain Book has to say about Julia's Hope: "By 1931, the Worthams had lost everything---Samuel's job, Julia's inheritance, and their home in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Pursuing an empty promise of employment, they trudge off to Mt. Vernon, Illinois, but a violent summer storm and an abandoned farmhouse change their course. Has God provided a new home for a desperate family . . . and a new family for an elderly stranger?"
That blurb just doesn't seem to do the story justice. Yes, they end up in an abandoned farmhouse but more than that they end up finding the lovely older woman who owns the farmhouse and take her back to live there and work the farm with her. Though circumstances are less than ideal and many people think the Worthams are taking advantage of the dear old woman and want to drive them out of town, God provides again and again for the family. Emma, the dear older woman, showcases such an extraordinary gracious giving attitude. The story weaves in the desperate times they lived in but more than that it shows how they lived and farmed with much less than we have today.
The story isn't all tied up with a pretty bow at the end which, I feel, makes it more realistic. Sure I'd like the fairy tale ending of everyone realizing that the Worthams are wonderful, loving, God-fearing people and then they all apologize for treating them so horrid- but I know life doesn't happen like that. So, it is more realistic to see them continue to struggle with people's perceptions as well as their struggle to survive daily living with no money and no job prospects.
I loved reading how they found the house and made it a home. How Julia gleans weeds and greens and herbs and prepares meals. How God provided again and again.
This book is truly a lovely read. Each chapter is assigned a character in the story (Julia, her husband Sam, and Emma) who tells part of the tale from their perspective. At first this threw me but I quickly caught on and quite enjoyed getting the first-person perspective from the 3 main characters; it added so much more to the story- a deeper connection to these 3 main characters.
I look forward to reading the 2nd and 3rd books in this series and then the series that follows it, The Country Road Chronicles.
And so, bottom line- if you enjoy a homestead story with "a time for planting and a time for harvesting" and a great mixing of God's provision added for good measure, then check out this book/series.

Names Matter

10:51 AM, 2007-May-18 .. Posted in Check This Out .. 0 comments .. Link

NAMES MATTER
By Dr. Michael A. Halleen

Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called
Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter - or rock).
(John 1:42)

When our son was born these many years ago, we gave him my name (adding "Jr.").
To avoid having two "Mikes" to answer to, we called him "Mick,"
a name I had always wanted to be called—like Mickey Mantle, the great New York Yankee
outfielder and hero of my youth. Unfortunately, to the kids of our son's generation
the name was associated more with Mickey Mouse than with any baseball player, and
by the time Mick was in junior high school he was consistently being subjected to
that humiliation. He decided to use "Mike" instead.

We begin early to attach our name to a vision of our character and the self image
we project. All of us are encouraged and strengthened when our names are treated
with respect, but we hurt when they are used in derision. Parents who refer to their
children as "Klutz" or "Moron" (or worse!) do them a great disservice.
Punkie Nash might not have been the bad boy of our neighborhood if he had been given
something other than that unfortunate nickname. It became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Peter was no "Rock" when he was first called that, but he grew into it.
That can happen when a name conveys value. In the musical "Man of LaMancha,"
based on Cervantes' story of Don Quixote, the hero greets Aldonza, a crude woman
of the streets, as though she were a queen. He gives her a beautiful new name, Dulcinea.
Tough and cynical, she responds with skepticism, yet gradually starts to become
the good person he believes her to be. She sings,

Can't you see what your gentle insanities do to me?
Rob me of anger and give me despair.
Blows and abuse I can take and give back again;
Tenderness I cannot bear.

At the end of the play Don Quixote lies dying, confused and unaware. Aldonza pleads
with him to remember her name. Is it so important? he wonders. "Everything!"
she says. "My whole life! Once you found a girl and called her Dulcinea, and
when you spoke the name, the angels seemed to whisper, Dulcinea, Dulcinea."

Names matter. Call your children by names that angels can echo. Honor your spouse
with a title conveying only tenderness and love. Let students and colleagues and
neighbors and friends be mentioned in words that they would be pleased to hear whispered
across the heavens.

To laugh

When I am in need of a laugh or just a good pick-me-up I go on over to Antique Mommy's blog. I giggle, I snicker and often outright guffah at her hilarity.
I enjoy her ability to embellish an already good tale and to make the frustrating moments of life a bit more laughable.
You just gotta read this post- oh, did I laugh. If I'd been drinking my water it would have spewed on the computer! I've lived this post!
Enjoy!

Lemonade stand

I love my free Kraft's Food and Family Magazine.
I just received the latest issue yesterday and loved the little 2 page spread on kids having a lemonade stand. Just look at this picture from the magazine:

They're all so cute and coordinated and all that! I love the little Lemonade sign and the idea of selling a little snack mix too.
Check out the whole deal at Kraft Food's Kids Corner. They've got the recipes and ideas for putting together your own little lemonade stand. I know my  girls would just love to do this some time! 'Course I don't have a white picket fence for a back drop . . . .

Fast food vs Reality

Have you ever thought to yourself that the pictures of food in advertisements are quite different from what you get in reality?
Some enterprising person has a nice little photo display
right here showing you the remarkable difference.
And that is why we don't eat out that often- because I can make it better here @ home- both in looks and in taste!

Great Tip

1:43 PM, 2007-Apr-16 .. Posted in Check This Out .. 4 comments .. Link

In my blog reading here at HSB2 I just found a wonderful interesting tip for night time coughing.
Rub Vicks Vapor Rub on the feet and then cover with socks- the coughing will stop!
I will definitely be doing this the next time one of the kids develops a coughing fit.

Hat Tip to Titus 2 Woman! Thanks a bunch!

Stuff still not working

9:39 AM, 2007-Mar-21 .. Posted in Check This Out .. 2 comments .. Link

Ah, well, linking and inserting a photo etc. still aren't working yet.

Anyone know when this will be fixed?

To the Powers that Be- we trust you will get this all fixed soon!

Thanks for this great community

Ugh. Sigh. Moan. Whine.

6:15 PM, 2007-Mar-20 .. Posted in Check This Out .. 0 comments .. Link
Ooh, I hope this all gets fixed soon.
I love to cut and paste posts from Word (then I don't lose all that I've written when an attempt at posting goes south quickly). It saves time and allows for spell checking . . . . .
But I do NOT like the new way of cutting and pasting here-  that clean up box is not working right! It says to hit OK and well, there is no OK button/icon/whatever.
Ugh.
Patience is a virtue.
I pray things will be back to normal soon.
I am sure the powers that be behind this wonderful community are hard at work on these issues and I don't want to sound ungrateful or come across as thinking they aren't doing a good enough job.
These little hiccups do happen and we are probably pretty spoiled here that they don't happen too often.
Anyhoo- hoping it is fixed soon cuz it's a bear to post right now.

??Confused??

8:45 AM, 2007-Mar-20 .. Posted in Check This Out .. 1 comments .. Link

Every time I try to set a link and click on it- it brings up a small box with Homesteadblogger's Home page- which it won't expand or let you click on or anything . . . . .
A tad exasperating . . . .
Are there still kinks being worked out?????
Or is this feature gone?
Just wondering if someone out there knows for sure . . . . ..

I have a request for help

4:20 PM, 2007-Jan-30 .. Posted in Check This Out .. 6 comments .. Link

I have a request. To all homeschooling families- do you have a name for your little homeschool?
I have some information on homeschool student ID cards and they ask for a name- plus when my children graduate from this little homeschool I’d like to have A School Name for their diplomas.
Please share in the comments the name of your little homeschool and perchance- offer up some ideas to me????
Thanks!

Giggles and grins

1:02 PM, 2007-Jan-18 .. Posted in Check This Out .. 0 comments .. Link

Here is a short little story to make you grin:
George was going up to bed when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window.

George opened the back door to go turn off the light but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things.

He phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?" and he said no. Then they said that all patrols were busy, and that he should simply lock his door and an officer would be along when available.

George said, "Okay," hung up, counted to 30, and phoned the police again.

"Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people in my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now cause I've just shot them all." Then he hung up.

Within five minutes three police cars, an Armed Response unit, and an ambulance showed up at George's residence.

Of course, the police caught the burglars red-handed.

One of the policemen said to George: "I thought you said that you'd shot them!"

George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!"

REMINDER...This is only humor, not advice...

Found the article!

Thanks to Sweetie right here at homesteadblogger I have found the article I was referring to in my previous post and wonder of wonders- it was written by her husband!
The article is titled Song of Solomon: She Is What You Made Her by Les Berry and is printed in the Jan/Feb issue of Making It Home Magazine.[MIH]
Oh and by the way, I find MIH is worth pinching my pennies for.

The Nativity Story

3:54 PM, 2006-Dec-15 .. Posted in Check This Out .. 4 comments .. Link
I am so terribly bummed. I was planning on taking my youth group (and my 2 daughters) to go see The Nativity Story on Sunday afternoon. Our local theater has changed the movie times. They are now showing it only 1 time a day- at 9:40 pm. Being a 2 hour movie- it won't get out until 20 to Midnight. I have a mostly young (middle school) youth group and most of their parents don't like them out that late. And truthfully I don't want to be going to see a movie that late.
Obviously it wasn't a money maker for them so they withdrew the prime times for other movies.

Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
