Shocking!

Allow me to share some shocking information with you all. Some states try to regulate the percentage rate that credit card companies can charge- Michigan is one of those states. The state of Michigan has set that no credit card company may set an interest rate of higher than 25%.
BUT:
We learned at court yesterday that the way the credit card companies get around this is that they are able to charge interest rates from the state the card originates in- not where the credit card holder lives. So you will find that most credit cards are issued from the state of South Dakota because they can then legally charge an interest rate of up to 30%. Yes you read that right- 30%.
WHAT??? Is it any wonder that people are having trouble with credit card debt- if you read the fine print on your statements/contract you will find that the credit card companies can raise your interest rate whenever they feel like it- and can especially take it to the maximum if you are late on a payment (and we are talking 1 day late- no grace period), go over limit, or heaven forbid, pay less than the amount stated.
One of the many things I have learned is that you must very carefully monitor your credit card statements each and every month. Check not only for purchases you didn’t make but your interest rate and if they’ve changed your payment date. They are that sneaky- really!
If your credit card company ups your rate and you feel it is unfair- CALL THEM. You have the power to negotiate your rate. If the person in customer service tells you they can’t help you blah, blah, blah- ask to speak with their supervisor. Remember to keep your voice calm and professional- do not fly off the handle or come off as demanding. State your case simply- make sure to point out your stellar credit history with them- your timely payments, paying above the minimum, how long you’ve been with them etc. If this doesn’t work for you- simply state that you will either close your account or better yet (to them) tell them that you are prepared to switch to another credit card that can offer you XX% rate (and to make sure you are not bluffing- have this info on hand- you probably get offers like this in the mail 3 or 4 times a week).
Also important- keep a call log- who you spoke with on what day and what they said in response to you.
If they turn you down- call back again the next month and the next.
As for me- personally—I will never EVER own a credit card again. I am just too tempted. I do not want to be in debt to anyone but the Lord.
Some great tools for you: Check out Dave Ramsey- he has a website and a couple of great books- I personally recommend The Total Money Make-Over (check it out at the library before spending the money on it- but I tell you- its worth buying!).
I believe I will be sharing more tips and tricks from what I have learned these past two years. I want to get the word out that you can help yourself! Really!

30%!
I know I am very cynical, but why do you think Congress and those in power allow this 30% rate and other financial wrongdoings to go on? (like all the subprime mortgages where banks/financial companies made big fees with each mortgage issued). Because those in the know, those in power are making big $$$$ off of it.

We don't have any credit card debt, but before marryign I had some of my own and yes, without realizing it, my percentage went from whatever it was to 25% without me noticing it. And 30%....wow!!! LIke you said, no wonder people get into such debt and can't crawl out of it at that percentage!!!

I just bought Dave Ramsey's book off half.com and haven't read through it yet, but am excited about what I have read so far.

God's Blessings,
Amy Jo

and thank you for sharing...to be transparent in this is so helpful to us....we all have made money mistakes and I know God is indeed in your writing and new plan for ending the debt. He has rescued Les and I during this unexpected move and paid things off we could not have possibly done...I am thankful and yet we still face debt and know that God indeed is walking it out with us.

also - we pay our credit card each month -but occasionally they will sneak in charges if say a month is a low charge month and then the next is higher- if you "carried a balance" - even though you pay off the full amount they send you a bill -they apply it to the most recent charges and let the older ones "fester" so to speak - and we've had situations where we had to close a credit card and quit using it - because unless you quit using it - they would never actually pay the balance and quit charging you interest - they are VERY sneaky -even to those to try to be responsible to them. If I could figure a better way to get my gas.... hmmmm

Amy,
I forgot to tell you we have found a full-time youth minister who will start officially on Feb. 10 with a welcome reception from the youth and Parish-Staff committee.
We have heard that the new YP's father was Elvis' guitar player, the new YP learned to play guitar from his father, and he has a 20 year old son, so we are guessing he is in his 40's. The people who interviewed him seem really excited about finding him.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
