Home Sweet Simple Home

Infestation! Need Help!

Okay homesteaders I am in desperate need of info/help/strategies for lice! My 5 yr old DD was sent home from school with it and I spent oodles of money on over-the-counter junk. I vacuumed the furniture, carpets, cushions, pillows, mattresses etc. I have taken away all stuffed animals, washed load after load of laundry, vacuumed out the car and have run myself ragged.

I bought the "bug" spray for furniture and the like, the shampoo and spent extra $$ on an additional treatment, a leave in gel, that is suppose to really get those nits out. I did it all by the book . . . . Took dd into school early and waited while her head was checked. No dice, still got lice. Back home again. I am so frustrated and practically in tears.

We have battled this for almost 3 weeks. It was suppose to be gone in 2 weeks! I don't know what to do and can't think straight (possibly due partially to monster cleaning marathons and very sore muscles).

Please- is there anyone out there who has advice? A home remedy? Today I am trying baby oil. I was told to completely saturate her head with it and cover it with shower cap and leave it on for 12 hours. Sigh. It's only been 2 hours and she hates it. It's slippery and keeps falling off and her little brother keeps grabbing at it. I really don't want to resort to shaving her head! Older dd had a bit but not the total infestation as younger and she has been declared "okay/clean" and is in school.

If nothing else, please pray for us. I'm at my wits end.

Did you buy the RID combs, the metal ones? If your dd have fine hair then these combs will work much better then the plastic ones that come with the kits. It is more $$, but it really does a much better job on getting the nits and that is what the school looks for. The package has two combs, one is a smaller toothed one for the lice and other is a longer toothed one for the nits. I will be praying, I know how annoying those critters can be. :0(

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
