WFMW: How to: Snow Removal

12:43 PM, 2008-Jan-2 .. Posted in Works for Me .. 4 comments .. Link

Works for Me Wednesday is back.
I have to admit that my tip today is rather strange . . . . .
But with over 15 inches of snow and more falling as I type—this is what came in handy today.

First— if you don’t have any ice melt to put on your sidewalk- you can substitute the following: table salt (but it’s gonna take a lot), Sand (if your sandbox isn’t frozen- we keep a small Rubbermaid container of sand in the trunk of our car to add weight and be ready for helping add traction) or – my new favorite Water Softener Pellets. You know the saying, “Necessity is the mother of invention”. I knew my little container of table salt wasn’t going to do the whole walk- but throw out a couple of scoops of those pellets and TA DA!!!

2nd tip: Don’t you just hate it when you’re shoveling and the snow just sticks to your shovel? Spray your shovel with cooking spray (Like Pam) and it’ll slide right off.
So those are my wacky but really useful tips for today.
Find more wonderful tips at Shannon’s- our lovely hostess for Works For Me Wednesday.

As a bonus the weeds and grass won't grow in the cracks on your walkway. The salt will keep them from growing there. As the ice and snow melt, the salt will settle into those little cracks and you'll have a weed free walkway this spring.

keeping sand in your trunk is a great idea, especialy if you hit an icy patch. last november we had to have our sidewalks redone and were told not to use traditional salt or ice melt as it breaks down the cement. we were told to just use sand or kitty litter, but i wonder if water softener tablets would work without hurting the cement??? thanks for the tips.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
