Home Sweet Simple Home

A special school week

I had grand plans that we would be spending this week working on a short Thanksgiving unit study that would include a lapbook, cooking and various Thanksgiving books for reading.
That is not reality. Reality is that we have been schooling since the last week of August with no breaks and we are all running a bit low on pep and such. Don't get me wrong- school has been going quite well and we are all enjoying what we've been learning about the Middle Ages- we're just feeling a bit ragged.
We have a couple of loose ends from last week's schooling that didn't get done (Maiden and Mr. Steady are making the coolest model of a castle) and so I decided to set aside the incredible unit study and make this week about catching up and slowing down. We've continued with our math and spelling as well as our readers/read-alouds (this will put us ahead a few days- good since we usually fall behind a day or two at times).
In honor of Thanksgiving, we made Thankful booklets yesterday and are reading letters from 2 fictional characters- one a girl on the Mayflower and the other an Indian boy.  There are 3 letters each with interactive questions- all leading up to great discussion time . . . . . I think you can go to Scholastic's website to get these letters. [A friend downloaded them and shared with me]. We're reading a set of letters each day.
Maiden is also working on a sewing project (elective/home ec.)- she's making a special pillowcase as a birthday gift for a dear friend.
Sassafras continues with her journal writing and has begun to add personal drawings to her pages. She even signs her name with a heart at the end! LOL She has also begun to learn how to do laundry (elective/home ec.).
As for Mr. Conductor- he has been quite busy. He's strung beads in patterns and also made color patterns with Legos. He's made a turkey from a hand tracing and helped his Mama make Thanksgiving trail mix. He's staged his own mock battles with little plastic cowboys and Indians. Oh, and there's that catapult he's been messing with too. He's taken to "reading" Brown Bear, Brown Bear to us. He likes to trick us and say a different color- when we pretend that the color is right he then corrects us and says, "Pay attention, Mama. You weren't paying attention. You hafta look at the colors."
Tomorrow we plan to make a gingerbread cake- not exactly the spice cake made in the wonderful Thanksgiving-ish book, Goody O'Grumpity, but close and close enough is good. We'll read the book, discussing how life was in colonial times and then make our own Goody Cake.
So even though it isn't the schooling week I had envisioned- we are still schooling.
We are still learning.
God is good.

I love reading your blog! Your Thanksgiving unit sounds awesome to me, even if it wasn't what you had in mind. That happens a lot around here!

If you have time, check out the post over at my "Retreat." I've tagged you! Hope you have the time to participate.

Love and Blessings,
Laurie

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
