Figuring Costs

2:21 PM, 2007-Nov-15 .. Posted in Menus .. 1 comments .. Link
Just wanted to jot down a couple of notes about when I figure the costs of meals . . . I do not figuring the cost of adding spices to a meal unless it is a large amount (like a 1/4 cup or more)- so when a recipe calls for a pinch of salt or a 1/4 tsp of baking powder- I don't calculate those itty bitty figures.
Right now is the season when I stock up on spices, flour and sugar and such for the entire year. What with all the holiday baking sales at the local grocer's this is the time to stock up. I set aside a bit of extra grocery money for the last 6 weeks of the year in order to afford all the deals. I store the flour in the freezer (why? because that's what my momma does!) and the sugar in a rubbermaid tote on the bottom shelf in my pantry (which right now needs to be cleaned but we won't go there).
For spices- I must also interject that I have an herb garden and grow/dry my own sage, oregano, chives and thyme. I can normally harvest the chives approx. 10 months of the year (yes even in winter) and so we have fresh. (Nothing beats fresh chives on my baked potato or in my corn chowder- Yum). Most other spices, I purchase at the local dollar store- with the exception of the special sale at a local Amish store- when they have their 20% off every item in the store sale at the beginning of January I purchase the good stuff: cinnamon, paprika, onion salt, garlic salt and powder . . . . . How do I pay for it? With some of that extra money set aside at the end of the year.
How much extra money do I set aside? Well, that really depends. This year, if I can keep pinching and saving- I'll have $25-35 to go towards purchasing these pantry staples and an extra $40 for the meat/poultry sales that go on at this time of year (I plan to stock up on ham, turkey breast and pork chops).

for breaking this down. That really helps. And you know I never considered stock piling flour and sugar and the like. Of course that makes sense!

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
