Smorgasbord

A lovely lady here on HSB2 just asked me:
What is a Smorgasbord?

Well, first off, thanks for checking out my menu and asking!
A smorgasbord is by definition a meal of appetizers served buffet style.
For me- it's my fancy way of saying "we're eating whatever's in the fridge".
Saturdays are our clean out the fridge days- otherwise we'd have a lot of waste with uneaten spoiled food.
Here's what Saturday Lunch and Dinner looks like here:
I place all the leftovers on the table and everyone helps themselves to whatever they want. This is especially helpful when someone, for some reason beyond me, leaves approx. 2-3 tablespoons of some food in a container in the fridge (why not just finish it all?). There's not enough to form a meal for even Mr. Conductor but it becomes a smorgasbord dish when added to a piece of this and a helping of that.
For example: This past Saturday we had fried fish, mac-n-cheese, salad, steamed veggies, and beef stew in the fridge as well as some biscuits in the bread box. I had fish and a salad for lunch. Mr. Steady had beef stew ladled over a biscuit. Sass had a huge bowl of mac-n-cheese and Mr. C had "fishy nuggets" with a bit of ranch dressing to dip them in (Maiden was off visiting with friends).
With a bit of ingenuity/craftiness, everyone eats what they want and the fridge gets cleaned out- not to mention we're saving money!
As Martha would say, "It's a good thing."

Bless you for your post and this sounds a fantastic idea and perhaps one I should introduce at home (even though there is only me). I hate to say but I have a habit of throwing foods away after a couple of days if not eaten - so hence this would be good discipline for me.

Also would you mind sharing more about your menu planning please - that would be great. You will be fine tomorrow, please let us know how you get on.

p.s. I always look at your menus but keep forgetting to ask when it comes to the smorgasbord. I love the way you add costs to your foods too.
