WFMW: Query

8:00 AM, 2007-Oct-3 .. Posted in Works for Me .. 12 comments .. Link
I have asked this before . . . but now I have the collective ear of the Works For Me crowd and am hoping for even more helpful hints, tips and tricks.
I have a 3 yo boy and am now unhappily blessed with the distinct aroma (or should I say noxious odor?) of boy p*e in my bathroom.
SO- How do you combat the smell of boy p*e and give your bathroom that fresh-as-a-daisy (or close to it) sweet-sigh-of-nosey-smelling-contentment euphoria?
And while we are at it- I’ve gotta ask- does anyone soak soiled unders in anything while waiting for the wash? I’m getting pretty tired of trying to come up with enough clothes for a load so that I can wash the boy’s stinky drawers.
Thanks in advance, dear readers!
Please check out Shannon's Backwards Works For Me Wednesday today- we're posting queries and questions instead of tips- looking for answers . . . . Go on and see if you can't answer a few and don't forget to post a conundrum of your own.

I have no suggestions but am anxious to see what others say. Right now I use vinegar.

lol, as a mom of 3 boys I had to look at this one!

My advice, give the boy his own bathroom, (even if you have to add on to your home) and shut the door!!! My oldest is 17 and my youngest is 8, and I can assure you, a)it gets worse, and b) there is no cure.

Hi- try spraying Fabreeze in the bathroom every couple of days. Also, I have two boys and am constantly washing dirty baseball uniforms and I just wash them in hot water and use my regular detergent and Oxi-clean! It works great! No soaking or anything!!

I give the toilet and surrounding area a spritz and a wipedown every morning. It keeps (most) lingering odors at bay, plus the toilet is clean every day! :) Great question - I am interested in everyone's answers as I have 2 boys - 4yrs and 10months.

Any ideas for a 1st birthday party? I would love suggestions! http://ourdevinefamily.blogspot.com

I would keep a bucket of water with Borax and baking soda added near your washer to toss the soiled or wet undies in. It will help them from staining and freshen them.

I have two boys (5 & 8) and I don't seem to have any problems with urine odor. I scrub my bathroom thoroughly once a week and do a spritze and wipe with Windex ( a mild ammonia cleaner) when necessary (in the case of bad aim, lol).

Hope this helps.

Clean it really well with bleach. I mean, scrub the bathroom down. Twice. then. make them sit down to pee. My boys will TURN AROUND and talk to someone WHILE THEY ARE PEEING!!!! AGGGHHHH. okay. I have calmed down again. lol. I was getting so aggravated at having urine soaked bathrooms that I started making them sit down.

Now, if only I could get them to flush the toilet...

First, let me say that I gave up. This is from a mom who once found her 2 boys "sword fighting" each other with their stream!

I ended up changing the toilet to a one piece model because there was so much P filth that got under the tank. Since then I haven't had a problem.
Second, Good luck!

Here are mine:

1) at least once a week, pour some peroxide into the toilet tank & bowl

2) make sure to wipe down the wall and floor behind the toilet, including the water fill pipes with clorox wipes,

3) wipe the toilet daily with clorox wipes, make sure to get UNDER the tank it self. ( I hope this makes sense) The underside of the tank is not gazed, so urine will sink in and continue to give off odors even when everything else is clean.

And perhaps changing the wax ring under the toilet. It made a big difference once my husband did that. HTH!

You've gotten great advice so far. I with you - I have 2 young boys with bad aim! I would assume you clean often. So, the only other thing I can think of is OdoBan from Sam's Club. This seems to work for us.

Also, I keep soiled undies soaking in a plastic container with homemade laundry soap and vinegar.

Thank You

Oh, I am so glad I asked!
Thank you everyone for the terrific advice.
I use Clorox Wipes daily (sometimes 4-5 times daily) but will add Odoban.
Thanks for the tips on soaking the icky unders while waiting for the wash- I am definitely doing that!
Our bottom toilet rim is caulked so I'm thinking I can't get under there to clean it- have taken a toothbrush soaked in bleach to it though . . . . my hubby just replaced the toilet etc. this spring- of course, that was before the little man started the potty training . . .
I want to know- has anyone used Oust? Does it really work to eliminate the odor- really and truly? I don't want to spend $money$ on it if it won't work.
Thanks again!

Try solid odor eliminator called natural magic. I bought it at Lowe's home improvement store in cleaning section and next to cashier registors even eliminates musty smells

In the pet aisle of Walmart, I've purchased OUT-Pet Stain and Odor Remover. It contains a safe bacteria and enzymes that work directly on the problem. I use this when the routine cleaning doesn't handle the odors. Under usual circumstances, all of the suggestions of the other commenters work. If I've cleaned well, but still have a lingering smell, I spray down the whole general area of the toilet, the wall around and the floor and leave it. I haven't had it fail me yet--and I have six boys and for a long time we had only one bathroom.
