A HS month in review

We have just finished our first month of our 2nd year of homeschooling. I have decided to keep monthly progress reports for each child to better see at a glance how each is doing and what tweaking may be necessary.
Our month started out quite well, the children were all eager to start school, excited and inspired by their new books and such. Then we went on vacation. I got terribly sick on vacation. I came home from vacation- still sick. We managed to squeak out normal homeschooling days but it wasn’t easy and was pretty wearing on a weary mommy. I didn’t have much left in me by the afternoon and evenings- well thank the Lord for a menu plan and willing helpers- or we’d have been eating –out—or a lot of pbj. So while schooling didn’t go to the wayside, the enthusiasm definitely did.
Maiden started well. Her days are fuller- many activities/hands-on projects have been added to her curriculum this year as well as the normal yearly increase in studies. She thrives on the projects but has begun to “buck” at some of the notebooking and writing assignments. She had a slump there in the middle of the month and passed over a couple of assignments without permission to do so. She tends to get miffed that her schooling is taking longer while her brother and sister go off to play. She enjoys the reading and is reading ahead of our set schedule. Math has majorly improved since last year. She is consistently missing three or less problems and is finishing in around a half hour (as opposed to a whole hour last year!). Her language arts writing assignments got off to a rocky start but she seems to be developing a better flow now- only problem is she finishes a rough draft and has yet to be on time turning in a final draft. We discussed this and the fact that I will begin marking her down for late assignments.
Sassafras continues to struggle with distraction and day dreaminess. It is my desire for her to work more independently this year without me sitting right beside her every step of the way. Some days this works and others it doesn’t. She consistently has perfect math pages each day, yet it takes her an hour or more to finish because she is easily distracted. I have begun to set the timer for her (like last year for Maiden) and hope this will help her. She has started Sequential Spelling this year- a year ahead of schedule but she requested it. She has caught on quickly and really enjoys it. She is struggling with the writing assignments in her Sonlight Core 2 Language Arts program. I am not sure how to approach this as the writing often brings her to tears of frustration because she feels overwhelmed. I have tried different approaches to help her better understand and so far we haven’t found “the one”. We are both praying about it. It has become her least favorite subject, and mine as well. I dread those lessons. She loves the science and history lessons and thrives on the handwriting. Mr. Steady has taken to reading either history or science and they enjoy the daily connection.
As for Mr. Conductor, he’s poking right along. He loves to sit by the sissies and do school. He does seatwork (worksheets) three days of the week on average and usually does 3-4 papers (a sticker sheet, cut-n-paste, following directions and a coloring page). We pepper our schooling with hands-on play (rice table, play dough, puzzles, Legos), computer learning games and with fun Mommy-Mr. C play time.
The children are all listening to classical music at bedtime (by composer) and are all interested in our current read aloud, Ginger Pye. During school, I sometimes add a Sing the Word CD that helps with Bible memorization.
Looking back on September: Oh, man did that month seem long! With me being sick for so much of the month and then the wedding, it just seemed like I couldn’t keep up. I am glad to put that month behind me and am praying that October will be better and more on track than September. I am praying our schooling keeps on an even keel and that Sass and I can figure a better way to do her writing.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
