Breaking it down for you

It surprises a lot of readers that our grocery budget is so low. Take this week for example- even I am surprised that I am coming in under $40 for the week. Let’s take a look at some of my menu items for this week, shall we?
Today- breakfast cost 15 cents for the oatmeal (I purchased a large container of quick oats @ Aldi’s for $1.37 which comes out to 5 cents a ½ cup serving and I make 3 servings to feed us 4), add 2 tbsp. of brown sugar @ 3 cents (6 cents) and an apple cut into chunks (free- my mom gave to us). Toast is 4 cents a slice and we eat 4 pieces= 16 cents for toast. Total cost for breakfast: 37 cents.
Yes, folks, that’s 37 cents total to feed a mom and 3 kidlets. And might I add that my homemade quick oatmeal is much tastier than the store bought individual packets!
Lunch today- Polka Dots (boxed mac-n- cheese with cut up hot dogs). The box of mac-n-cheese is 33 cents a box (@ Aldi’s), add ¼ cup milk for 4 cents (milk purchased for $2.50/gal) and ¼ cup butter for 25 cents (purchased for $1.99/pound) and 4 hot dogs cooked and cut up for 64 cents ($1.64 for a pkg of 10). Total cost for Lunch: $1.26 (to feed 1 mom and 3 kidlets)
Supper today- Apple pancakes and sausage patties. The pancakes come from a mix we purchased at a local Amish grocery. The mix cost $1.99 and we used 2 cups of mix- which comes to $1.32. The milk is already in the mix but needs 1 egg- 8 cents and 1 ¾ cup apple juice for 42 cents. Mr. Steady also added one diced apple (free- from my mom) to it. This made approx. 2 doz. pancakes (leaving leftovers for breakfast). We served sausage patties made from one pound of ground sausage purchased for $1.99.
Dessert was to be fruit cups but Maiden had a special guest over this evening who asked for my Mock Orange Julius. The slush drinks cost $1.38 for the orange juice and 10  cents for ½ cup of sugar ($1.48) and serves 5.
Total cost for Supper: $5.29
Monday’s meal total: .37+1.26+5.29= $6.92 [Note: the cost is different from this week’s daily menu plan because of the slush drinks].
Our snacks today: sliced apple and pumpkin oatmeal cookies @ a friend’s house. Mr. Conductor also had 3 Oreos and a bag of fruit snacks.
When I started meticulously keeping track of how much our meals cost I was surprised at how inexpensive we really eat and I also was better able to see just where my grocery money was really going (I use to lump it altogether- all purchases made at the local superstore- including paper products, clothes and  gifts- whatever I bought there . . . . and oh, those impulse purchases). Breaking down the cost also helps us to keep from eating out. We find we can eat better at home for less money. We do schedule one or two meals out a month- just to shake things up and for fun for the family. Once you see what you can cook at home- 3 full meals- paying $25 for a fast food meal for 5 doesn’t sit well in your stomach.

Wow Amy! What an eye-opener... we've significantly cut back on eating out, but it never dawned on me just how much cheaper it was to eat at home. Goodness, this makes me rethink a breakfast playdate at Chick-Fil-A we've been planning for Friday mornings... that's a lot of money!

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
