WFMW: Lint roller to pick up glass

10:42 AM, 2007-Sep-19 .. Posted in Works for Me .. 5 comments .. Link

Today’s handy tip comes from a bright idea I had out of necessity. Yesterday we had a light bulb shatter and scatter pieces all over our bathroom floor. I swept the whole floor and then swept it again. Since we are still walking around the house barefoot, I knew I had to make sure I picked up every miniscule piece of glass. My flooring is off-white so it was quite difficult to see every piece. After sweeping I ran my hand lightly over the floor to see if I had it all and of course, I cut myself on a itty bitty piece. [insert heavy sigh here]. So—here’s my big idea for making sure you pick up every last piece—a lint roller. I have a sticky sheet lint roller and so I rolled it over the whole floor once, threw away that sheet and then rolled it again (we won’t mention the dust bunnies it also picked up).
What a super idea!
I also plan on trying this the next time a light bulb breaks on the carpet too- no matter how great the suction on my vac is- I don't get the pieces that get embedded way down deep.

I love it...with three kids, broken glass is a regular thing around here. I'm going to have to go buy a lint roller now. Sadly, I haven't replaced the last one that the "baby" peeled off all the sheets to see how many there were, and ended up with them stuck all over her and the couch and the floor and the....you get the idea :)

What a clever idea! Thanks for sharing! I can't wait to try it out the next time we break an unbreakable Corelle dish...they shatter everywhere!

Amy,
I just read you last three entries. Great idea on the lint roller. Little Boy pee...out of my league..only little girls here!
The other subject, been there, done that! We have faced criticism for how we are raising our children, too. It usually comes up in a large group setting, like a big extended family dinner. I have had to be BLUNT and announce "Do not criticise our parenting decisions, ESPECIALLY in front of our children. We do not tell you how to raise your children, and when we want advice from you we will ask for it. Until then, keep your opinions to yourself."
I have even gone as far as saying "if you feel we are inadequate parents, then you can take legal action to try to revoke our parental rights. Until that happens, I don't want to hear your opinion about anything."
Now, the big "issues" about our parenting are that we wouldn't allow our 6 and 8 yo. daughers to fly by themselves across the country to visit grandmother, and we don't make them dress up in "foo foo baby-doll dresses" as our relatives think they should be dressed...not exactly the stuff to warrant intervention by social services.
How you discipline and educate your children is your decision. I realize you are trying to be diplomatic, but did it ever occur to you that if the other party is unhappy with your children, THEY can be the ones to stay away from family gatherings?
We had one situation where one of husband's sisters called my then 9 year old on the phone and had her in tears. What terrible crime did she commit? I, her inadequate mother, had told her she could pick out a new dressy outfit for a wedding we would all be attending (SIL's daughter's wedding). My 9 yo completely understood it was a "dress up occasion". My SIL called her and told her that SIL or grandmother would be choosing her clothing for that event, not us, as SIL did not want the bride and groom "to be disappointed in our daughter." My DH was furious. He told SIL that she was never to talk to our daughter that way again, and if she did, he would end all contact between her and our children. Sometimes you just have to draw a line in the sand. Sorry. In our case, being extremely blunt has worked.

This is a GREAT idea! Great for the shards of glass...but also great for the dust bunnies and little pieces that are SO HARD to sweep up!

Thanks so much for sharing!

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
