WFMW: My Morning Oatmeal

Today’s Works for Me Wednesday Tip comes from my kitchen!

When the weather starts to change and the cooler temps creep in I love to make homemade oatmeal. One of my favorite extras to add are apples. I also like to streamline my morning breakfast routine and get breakfast on the table in a speedy fashion. So- I cut up the apple chunks the night before- as you know apple browns quickly after it’s been cut. One way to keep apple from browning is to dip it in lemon juice.
I don’t do that- I have a much yummier alternative. After I dice up the apple, I put it into a container and then fill it with orange juice. The apple chunks “steep” in the juice over night and do not brown. Then all I do is drain them before adding the chunks to the oatmeal. It adds a wonderful hint of orange to the apple. As an added bonus- I sprinkle brown sugar in the oatmeal.
Oh, Yum.
Not only do I streamline breakfast prep but add a little bit extra that makes the kiddos feel special.
Side note: Today I added a few cranberries to the oatmeal too and thought perhaps next time I will try steeping the diced apple in cranberry juice.
And that’s what’s working here today. Check out the dozens upon double dozens of other great Works For Me Wednesday Tips over at Shannon’s

Have a Great Day!

Great tip! I've heard you can use pineapple juice, too, but I think we would like o.j. better! Thanks for the info.

Mom2fur of Sortafrugal.blogspot.com here. Great idea! It's the acid in the orange juice that does the trick, so I think cranberry juice would work fine, too. Sometimes, if I only use half an apple for something, I rub the other half with a little lemon juice to keep it white. I've also heard of letting the apple pieces sit in water with a little vinegar, but yuck, I can't help thinking they'd taste like vinegar, LOL!

The Wagner Clan

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
