Make it do
- With finances the way they are- we are really learning more and more about making do. A fine example is the fact that Mr. Conductor is pedaling around on Maiden’s old bike- not only did we not have the finances for a new bike but why purchase one when we have a perfectly good usable one right here at home? We are blessed that Maiden picked a flashy blue-green color for her first bike so it’s not like Mr. Conductor is toodling around on a pink and purple cycle. We took off any of the fussy-foo-foo and he is just one happy clam biking up and down the sidewalk like a maniac. The girls have had to make do lately after their CD player went kaput. They haven’t been able to replace it yet and yet- life has continued to go on. We, as a family, have enjoyed listening to the girls Adventures in Odyssey and Jonathan Park CDs since they have to use the stereo system in the living room for their listening pleasure. Mr. Steady got so hooked on the Jonathan Park story line that he kept listening while the kiddos were having quiet time.
We are also making do with our car right now. It’s a bit of a tight fit getting 2 car seats and 3 kids in the back seat of our car and sure, we’d love to have a minivan but it just isn’t possible for us right now- and with gas prices what they are we are very thankful for a car that averages 28 miles to the gallon.
A wonderful way to make do is the library. I had to cancel some of my favorite magazine subscriptions because we just couldn’t afford the extravagance. And I’ve had to cut back on my book buying for now (except for school needs . . . .). The library helps us to make do- most of my magazines are available there and of course, if I want a book they don’t have there is always the inter library loan system.
Speaking of wonderful ways to make do- our family vacation will be spent camping in my uncle’s backyard. My uncle and his wife recently moved to the U.P. (that
Upper Peninsula for non-Michiganians) and have repeatedly asked us all to come up and visit. So we are. We’ll be camping in their backyard and using their facilities and cooking all together. And did I mention my parents and brother and his family are coming too! This helps us make do too because there are so many wonderful sight seeing opportunities in the U.P. that cost nothing or next to it. We’re planning on visiting a few waterfalls and perhaps Pictured Rocks. And of course, we get to go over the Mackinac Bridge. Plus don’t forget all those light houses . . . . we’ll be staying a block or so from Lake Michigan and are planning on catching some *free* sunsets.
Coming up next: Do without!

Your vacation sounds like a lot of fun. You definitely don't have to spend a lot to have fun and see new things.
I had an interesting experience this morning. I go to work after my youngest walks 2 houses to the bus stop. She is 12, so she doesn't want me walking with her. After the bus came, I was just about to leave when there was a knock on the door.
It was a man I did not know, and he was wearing a uniform for a local "Port-A-Potty" company. I just opened the door a crack, and he could see our big dog right there to protect me.
He told me he was driving down the street and saw some money in the street, and he had just seen the bus pick up the kids so he thought it was probably some kid's lunch money. He went to the neighbor's house first, and they told him we had school aged kids.
My daughter had taken 4 dollar bills today: 2 for a school lock fee, and 2 for her lunch. I asked him if it was 4 dollars, and he smiled and handed it to me. He said he wouldn't want one of his kids to go without lunch, so that's why he did what he did. I thanked him and told him I would drop the money off at her school on my way to work.
My daughter usually brings lunch, but occasionally she asks for permission to buy lunch. Today was that special day. What a Good Samaritan.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
